There are many different potential effects of discriminatory practice on individuals who use the health and social care service. These include: Marginalisation, empowerment, Low self-esteem and self-identity, restricted opportunities and negative behaviour such as aggression or criminality and loss of rights.
Marginalisation
Marginalisation is when someone feels as if they are not in part of the society. This is a potential effect of discrimination because everyone is made to be different compared to other people. This makes people feel as if they are left alone from other people in the society. An example of marginalisation in a discriminatory practice is when someone gets private care because there is no other type of care for them at a different place. This may make them feel as if they are getting treated differently compared to other people. They might also feel as if they are getting discriminated because of where and who they are.
Disempowerment
Disempowerment is when somebody feels that they are not powerful or do not have confidence. People who are getting discriminated may feel disempowered. Disempowerment is seen as an effect which usually takes place from bullying or getting discriminated. For example if a person is getting bullied by a group of people then they may feel disempowered. This usually makes them feel as if they do not

have enough power to fights against other people which can lead to certain health problems. Low self-esteem and self-identity A person who uses the health and social care service may have a low self-esteem or self-identity if they are getting discriminated.
A person who has low self-esteem may also have health problems such as being depressed. It can be even worse if people are getting discriminated by a health and social professional. The relationship and trust between people will get lost. The health and social care professionals need to make sure that the service users have self-esteem and self-identity is maintained or raised up so that whenever they are in the situation of getting discriminated they are able to cope with it in the right
way. Restricted opportunities When individuals are treating someone else differently, then they might restrict their opportunities. This might take place because of the age, religion, sexuality or culture of individuals. An example of restricted opportunities in a discriminatory practice is if there is a football match and a women wants to play aswell, they might not let her to play because as she is a female and the other people in the team are all male and this would mean that the men are restricting her opportunities because of her gender. Negative behaviours such as aggression or criminality Negative behaviour, aggression and criminality are the common effects which may result in a discriminatory practice. There may be certain times when individuals might be angry to a health and social care professional or other staff. This can affect the treatment of individuals as they might not be getting the right amount of treatment they are supposed to which often affects their health. Also, some people may attack somebody else such as their close friends which will affect the way people trust them as well as their relationships with other people. Loss of rights Overriding individual rights: In a health and social care environment there are mainly two ways of overriding individual rights. One is unlawfully which is when a carer is discriminating another person such as service users and do not respect the rights they have got. The other one is legitimately which is when individuals such as doctors take away the rights of people such as the service users.
Self-esteem involves evaluations of self-worth. People with high self-esteem tend to think well of others and expect to be accepted them.

Culture plays a key role in the quality of healthcare or health insurance services offered to patients. Disparities are ethnic or racial differences in the quality of healthcare. Ethnic or racial minorities tend to receive poor quality healthcare services compared to the majority ethnic group.
Overall discrimination is an awful thing. It is like a STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you don’t watch out. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. They allow for people to have control of them and walk all over them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
Diversity is where there are many different kinds of people living in a community together. This means that in a set environment there will be black, Asian, gay, straight, differently abled people living together in a community. Discriminatory prejustice must be able to be recognised by the carer, for example, if a woman is being discriminated against in a care home, or treated differently in a hospital setting, the carer must be able to recognise that this behaviour is happening, and inform a higher power, or go through the complaints procedu... ... middle of paper ... ... es.
“Meanings justify the differential treatment that groups receive as some groups are deemed more worthy of, and eligible to receive, society’s valued resources than others. It now serves as a way to treat people unfairly” (Smith, Racilization). Discrimination perpetuates race and leads to racial inequality. Discrimination can be categorical or statistical. Categorical discrimination is unfair treatment from the discriminator of people from a particular social group because he believes this discrimination is mandatory for acceptance into his social group. Statistical discrimination is unfair treatment of an individual because of the preconceived notions that are prevalent surrounding the social group they take part
People of color face inequality and intersectionality in healthcare whether through insurance coverage, access, social economics, and quality of care. This leads to our health care system having disparities. It remains a big challenge today as 41% of people living in the United States are people of color (kff.org). People of color aren't getting the same care as someone who's white. Racial and ethnic minorities received lower care. Race also plays a role if someone will be uninsured or not. Another problem with health care is social economics which causes some race to have better care than others. There have been little improvements to address these issues. Today our society is becoming more diverse not less. In 2015 minorities represented
This concept ties into the topic of intersectionality. Individuals can be oppressed to due many factors, which include: gender identity, race, sexual orientation, class, and a number of other factors.
When society thinks of healthcare, there are many racial disparities within healthcare, especially in treatment. How being a person of color in the United States can be difficult when it comes to accessing health care, especially in the hospital. In the United States, there seems to be a separation between physicians and patient, which contributes to the disparities in quality of healthcare. The hospital is a place where people should feel equally treated. The hospital is also a place where can be refused medical attention due to their socioeconomic status, race and gender. A patient needs to have confidence in the capability of their physician, so that they can be able to confide in him or her. When a person goes to the hospital to have
It is quite certain to say that discrimination can be deadly and can deprive a person from living a normal and happy life. Especially those with disability. Therefore, it is important for discriminatory practices to be avoided and dealt properly ones reported.. If these effects are dealt properly ,long term effects can be eliminated.
Marginalization is the social process of being relegated to the fringe of society. One such example of marginalization is the marginalization of women.
Health Care is an essential thing every person needs or has in day-to-day life not all can afford to have Health Care in the United States. Why? Well, some people have stated that it has to do mainly with race, but I disagree. The provisions of the federal and state governments to institute planned health care, coupled with our diverse cultures debunks that reasonsing. This paper will address why race is not the key fundamental to having acceptable health care benefit for all.
In the world today, racism and discrimination is one of the major issues being faced with. Racism has existed throughout the world for centuries and has been the primary reasons for wars, conflicts, and other human calamities all over the planet. It has been a part of America since the European colonization of North America beginning in the 17th century. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exist in our schools, workforces, and anywhere else that social lives are occurring. It started from slavery in America to caste partiality in India, down to the Holocaust in Europe during World War II.
Discrimination of any kind has the ability of affecting a person emotionally. In fact, it can have such a great impact that it constricts them to degrading mindsets. Mullin states that, “a girl can’t help but feel inferior when everything around her tells her that she is worth less than a boy. Her identity is forged as soon as her family and society limit her opportunities and declare her to be second-rate,” (Mullins). One could almost imagine the kind of emotional heartbreak and hurt a person would undertake when they are constantly reminded that they are worth nothing. Women who go through such treatments are being kept from reaching their potential and are left with the mindset that they are no good for anything in life. This leaves them with unguarded to all sorts of emotional abuse, and with no sense of worth. These girls have no other option but to come to terms with the life they are being forced to live. It also states that, “the victim can suffer distress with… psychological (nervousness, insomnia, fatigue) effects as well as loss of personal identity and self-es...
Discrimination towards minority groups based on their race, gender, and sexual orientation has existed in our society for decades. Till this day these stereotypes and prejudice towards an individual’s race, sexuality, ethnicity, and background still exist. There are particular barriers such as activities and interactions with people occurring daily, as well as plenty of disadvantages for those from different cultural backgrounds other than white. The term racism comes to mind when an individual draws negative thoughts about others due to their biological characteristics. Peggy McIntosh lists a number of conditions in her essay, White privilege, pointing out how her group in other words the advantage of being white protects her from racial
