Social psychology is the study of explaining how the behaviors and thoughts of individuals are influenced by the presence of other people. “Situational variable can exert powerful influences over human behavior, more so that we recognize or acknowledge” (Zimbardo). This discipline is strongly evident in the examination in how a person changes his beliefs and feelings around certain people and in different environments. In today’s society, it can be debated that minorities are treated unfairly due to their color of skin, religion, sexual orientation, and any other action that doesn’t fit into the ideal lifestyle. In many cases, people perform implicit biases, and that’s when one unconsciously and mindlessly follow the actions of people, regardless of right or wrong. Psychologist Solomon Asch correctly illustrated this theory when he conducted an experiment that tested the impact of peer pressure from a majority on one’s conformity. Asch measured the instances in which one changed his answer to match the other people in the experiment, and he concluded that more than half of the participants purposely gave false answers. Why would not only the participants in the Asch assessment, but also Nazis, slave owners, and racist all conduct themselves in similar ways? People obey authority and their peers because of normative and informational influences. One conforms because he wants to fit it and seek the approval of others, or he believes that other individuals know more information than him. In addition, there is a great divide among people, because so many individuals are following these dismissive behaviors, rather than believing in their own instincts. Social Psychologists can help resolve this issue by studying the reasons why some people practice prejudice and then teaching people how to reach within themselves and alter negative perceptions of others. Once we learn some of the ways discrimination is conceived, we may find ways that avoid the creation of them and decrease the likelihood of it occurring. To alter this harsh behavior, one must surround himself with the type of environment that encourages the positive characteristics of living with individuals who are different from him. “Confidence is knowing who you are and not changing it a bit because of someone’s version of reality is not your reality”

The movie “The Help”, shows that many people will avoid being different in order to fit in with societal norms. When given a choice, societal expectations are considered more important and valuable than embracing differences. Different groups have different expectations that are held sacred to them. These rules are good and bad as they provide a safe acceptable path for people to follow, but also creates a wall that no one dares pass in fear of being belittled and scoffed at. Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. The idea that people from majority groups think that they are not prejudiced is a concept known as colorblind ideology. This means that people who claim they are color-blind do not see “color” or race in any way. Many people in hiring positions or college admission claim to take on a color-blindness approach (Richeson and Nussbaum 2003). However, social psychologists would say that implementing the idea of colorblindness is not an effective approach. The authors explain how when a person was invited to a faculty barbecue. The person attended the barbecue in casual clothing T-shirt, shorts, and sandals, but the rest of the faculty was dressed in formal clothing. The person felt a sense of embarrassment. A person can be very courteous to a different person of another race. A group can then make fun of the person for treating them equally to their race. Then the person who treated the other race with respect, will then discriminate the race because the person felt a sense of embarrassment from their own race, and want to be accepted by their race. To solve racism with social forces is to respect all races because no is superior or better than another race.
