I liked the topic of Discrimination from Chapter 2 because I experienced these kind of treatment from other people’s and my personal experience. Even though the United State is a very open-minded country, some group of people still are experiencing mistreatment from discrimination both from their work and daily life.
According to the book, it states that the common knowledge of discrimination is that people’s behavior is influenced by their stereotypes toward specific group of people. Discrimination ignores the individuality and personality, treat this group of people with the same way and same standard. (Judge and Robbins 42)
I am working in a retail company as a part-time sales associate, and I am very admired this company because she is
very appreciating diversity and treating every employee fairly no matter what race they are. Furthermore, after I encountered with different people with different nationalities, races, and ages, I discovered that everyone have different advantage and disadvantage. For example, one of my former classmate is from Mexico, she is very smart; she is good at Math and Physics, and she is now attending Georgia Tech as an Engineering student. Also, not every Chinese people know Kong Fu and good at Math; not every senior citizen is retired and slow. If the company not treating everyone fairly base on their abilities, this company would not able to promote the right people and expand their productivities.
During this discussion, I learned more in depth about discrimination then I was aware of before. However, what I found to be most interesting was during chapter 11 and reading up about the FMLA Act. This section really stuck out to me because it directly related to my current employment position. I currently work at an OBGYN office and I am the one who is in charge of filling out the patient’s disability and FMLA forms. Having the opportunity to read up and learn more about these acts was not only informative, but also extremely helpful!
Discrimination is “Differential (usually negative) behaviors directed toward members of different social groups”(Branscombe & Baron, 2017). So, basically some discrimination that I saw in the movie was in the very beginning where the two old ladies were looking at Billy and his friend drive in their car playing loud music. I considered this to be discriminatory because the ladies didn’t even know the young men but they were making snarky remarks and even disgusted facial expressions. I felt like this was discrimination because they were having negative behaviors towards people they didn’t know and yet they were judging them on just a small factor. Another example of how the judge and jury also acted in a very discriminatory manner was when Vinny first came into defend Billy. The judge and jury acted like he was a horrible person for speaking the way he did and dressing the way he did. So, they went out of their way to laugh and tell him to dress better and be more prepared. Because of this Vinny actually conformed to their standards and gave in to their demands of what they considered to be a lawyer. Conformity is when you comply to fit a standard in society because you want to fit in and be liked as well (Branscombe & Baron, 2017). So, not only was Vinny a victim of discrimination for the way he dressed and talked but because of such discrimination he began to conform

While both race and gender have very real societal and, in some instances, personal consequences which enables both to be categorized as real neither race nor gender is more real than the other. Both of them faced and still face overt and covert discrimination, and both of them are built upon a mountain of logical fallacies that are able to ultimately be reduced down to societal standards and obligations forced upon them by the dominant group. Since they are also both deeply embedded in our culture they have become integrated into our sense of who we, as humans, are and in our perceptions of other people and situations.
Imagine being discriminated against because of a preference or something that is unable to be changed. What would that feel like? Discrimination is happening all around the world, with all different kinds of people. People can be discriminated against by all types of things, such as age, sex, race, religion, sexuality, height, etc. I believe that discrimination is becoming a bigger cause in other countries as the United States (US) and that it should be addressed more than it is being. There are many types of discrimination going on throughout various places but, the three main ones happening are sexuality discrimination, race discrimination, and religious discrimination. The biggest one accruing right now is sexuality discrimination.
Discrimination is known to exist in all workplaces, sometimes it is too subtle to notice, and other times it is exceedingly obvious. Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else.
