For my discourse community project, I wrote about and researched the business which I am currently employed at. The business’s name is Main Channel Marina, and I wanted to inform my fellow classmates about what a business like Main Channel Marina was like. I started my research with having several of Main Channel Marina’s employees fill out survey. I was able to get around 15 surveys filled out from the employees. Then I Interviewed one of the employees. This employees name is Jill Brooks and she works in the main office of Main Channel Marina as a receptionist. She was able to inform me of the history of the business, and stated the business’s overall goal. Once I had collected all of my data, I began to write my paper. I incorporated John
In the article “The Concept of Discourse Community” John Swales touches a few very important main ideas about what discourse community really is. I found it to be refreshing that he is able to express his feelings how he does in this article. Swales talks about discourse community and how our world today really isn 't that good at being apart of them. He discusses the six qualities or characteristics of being apart of a discourse community. You have to be active in communicating and wanting to be apart of that community and if you 're not that type of person than maybe it 's not your thing.
We had to find academic articles and popular articles. It is important to distinguish between a popular and scholarly article, but not all articles are credible. I learned how to find credibility in articles by finding the publication date, author’s credential, works references, and lengths of the articles. I started to work on the thesis and developed reasons to support my thesis. I also came up with reasons and found more articles as I go through the process.
At Children’s First, our mission is to keep a safe, healthy, prosperous environment for children. Being a part of this community, I know firsthand what it takes to maintain an ideal setting for children to grow. It is essential for the caretakers to communicate, share information, and work together to put the children first. This core goal of ours, along with my own experience, analysis, interviewing, and observation demonstrate that Children’s First Daycare is a discourse community according to Swale’s six characteristics of a discourse community.
This criminal committed nine murders, and multiple accounts of rape. I wrote about his family history and how it affected him in school, and his ability to live as a normal citizen. His family history was mentioned in my research, and how it made an impact on the life he lived. Mark was very athletic, excelling in high school football. I explained thoroughly about the crimes Mark committed, and what he was known for. Most importantly I mentioned that eight out of the nine murders were committed on women. I wrote a good amount about what the police department had done to catch Goudeau, and the evidence they had found. I also reached upon how the department was questioned about planting evidence. Throughout the whole process his family believed he was innocent, more importantly his
Discourse communities are groups of people with a unique point of view. There are many discourse communities around your everyday life. These communities are part of the entire human environment. Many discourse communities are distinctly large due to all the societies wanting the same things. My discourse communities are mostly Facebook.
In contemporary nursing practice, nurses need to integrate scientific knowledge and nursing theories prior to providing optimal health care. Nursing theories guide nurses to treat clients in a supportive and dignified manner through client centred approaches. However, it is challenge for nurses to practice client centred care in daily realities due to heavy workloads. In order to assist nurses to decrease the gap between ideal and real practice, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) develops Best Practice Guideline of Client-centred-care (Neligan, Grinspun, JonasSimpson, McConnell, Peter, Pilkington, et al., 2002). This guideline offers values and beliefs as foundation of client-centred care, and the core processes of client-centred care can facilitate provision of optimal nursing care. These four core processes of client-centred care include identifying concerns, making decisions, caring and service, and evaluating outcomes. According to RNAO (2006), ongoing dialogue with clients and self-reflection are essential for nurses to develop their nursing skills and knowledge on client-centred care. As a nursing student, I reflected on written transcripts of interactions between patients and me, so that I could gain insights into client-centred care for further improvement. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss importance of the core processes of client-centred care in nursing practice through identifying and critiquing blocks to conversation. Based on the guideline of RNAO (2006), respect, human dignity, clients are experts for their own lives, responsiveness and universal access will be elaborated in each core process of client-centre care as reflecting on three dialogues with patients.
In his article “The Concept of Discourse Community,” John Swales describes a discourse community as a group of people that “have a broadly agreed set of common goals, contain certain mechanisms of intercommunication among its members, have acquired a specific lexis, and have a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content discoursal expertise” (Swales #). An example of such a discourse community is the legal profession. The legal profession has the common goal of understanding and applying general principles to particular factual situations. In doing so, lawyers use language, concepts, and methods that are unique to their community. In order to become a recognized member of the legal community, a person must graduate from law school and pass the bar exam thereby demonstrating an in depth knowledge concerning all areas of the law and the specialized rules, methods, and jargon used by lawyers to communicate about legal principles.
A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Discourse communities will have a type of mechanism to provide feedback to help improve the group. The participatory mechanisms provide feedback from inside and outside of
Your paper could have been stronger if you had used quotes to back up your ideas.
Discourse communities play a big role in life and how humans interact in general. A discourse community refers to a group of people who have language, life patterns, culture, and communication in common with each other. The idea of a discourse community has also been used to bring people of different orientations together, like family members, students, or committees. All of these types of people might have different standards of living, like their level of income, education, and work abilities. Discourse community can also refer to a speech community, because the main feature of a discourse community is communication. A discourse community can include groups of different regional areas that may or may not share norms and living patterns

My paper is about my opinion and what I’m interested in my history . It’s about tragic stories that caught my eye and of course “Give me liberty or give me death” that we were all interested in as a class. What I did to complete my research was i read over and over of the articles that i picked i also analyzed my stories and highlighted interesting facts and added a piece of my mind of how i feel about the story which was pretty intense. Being an american defines a lot of things being an american gives a lot of opportunities , being american gives you choices ,and being american gives you the right to speak and others agree. For example one article i picked was “The right to Fail” was amazing and it's a great example
My research project question was; How can a person with limited experience find a job on an Australian cattle station. My sub-questions were; Are there any skills required to work on a station? If so, what skills?, Would Uni/TAFE/school subjects etc. help me obtain a job on a cattle station?, Do I need to learn new skills? If so what?, What certificates are needed? I obtained my information from online sources, formal and informal interviews and practical experience. The majority of my information came from primary sources such as the interviews I conducted on my trip to Anna Creek Station and the experience itself. It became apparent after my trip to Anna Creek Station that obtaining a job on a station is relatively easy and
Once I obtained all my research, I picked out the information from sources I thought would be helpful. I categorized the information into two categories: literature related to existing strategies which are not effective and literature on recommended strategies which will be more effective. I then outlined what I wanted to say for each source and the order I should write the sources in. Lastly, I wrote the paper and put all the sources into APA style. After I printed the paper and edited it after a couple days to find any mistake that could be
During the establishment of my subject, I knew what I wanted to discuss what I wanted to touch in particular without knowing exactly how to approach the question or where I intended to get to the end. Talk with friends and colleagues from my former internships about it allowed me to ask to myself questions, deepen and dig what I had in mind to successfully emerge a clear idea of work to be done to this memory. After a long period of reflection, discussion and sharing with different people, the time to research has come. This is a task not easy to realize that searching for articles, books or publications on a specific topic. It was almost impossible to find literature on the whole subject that I have defined.
