Develop a Personal Disaster Plan
A natural disaster is any event that is caused by the force of nature on environmental factors that has catastrophic consequences. Natural disasters include: avalanches, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, impact events, landslides, mudslides, tornadoes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions [1].
I live in the state of Missouri and based on the geographical location it is frequently affected by natural disasters like Ice storms, tornados, severe storms, and flooding. Since the year 1990, Missouri has recorded more than 30 federal disaster declarations. Local government keeps track of disaster information locally and it is the responsibility of State Emergency Management Agency to work with the local government to make sure that they get all the information needed and then they integrate all the information and send it to the governor. Based on the intensity of the event, the governor may request the president to issue an emergency disaster declaration. [2]
Advance Preparation:
Preparing for the disaster in advance might save your life. So, it’s always a wise thing to prepare in advance. My steps are:
• Designing a floor plan for my apartment, this makes me aware of the doors and windows to get out of the building during emergency.
• Creating an emergency contact of a person who is residing out-of-state and name that person as ‘ICE’ in my phone’s contact list, because whenever we are involved in an accident the officials might call to that ‘ICE’(In Case of Emergency) contact.
• Registering to weather alerts and being aware of the climatic conditions.
• Keeping the first aid kit in an emergency location in your house.
• In case of tornados, planning a location which is beneat...

• Periodic drills must be done to ensure that, all the members of family execute their plan as planned.
• Talk to the children’s school officials asking for disaster plan when the disaster hits during school hours. If they are not made support them by giving your own ideas.
• Update and discuss the plan with all the members of the family once a year.

Both man-made and natural disasters are often devastating, resource draining and disruptive. Having a basic plan ready for these types of disaster events is key to the success of executing and implementing, as well as assessing the aftermath. There are many different ways to create an emergency operations plan (EOP) to encompass a natural and/or man-made disaster, including following the six stage planning process, collection of information, and identification of threats and hazards. The most important aspect of the US emergency management system in preparing for, mitigating, and responding to man-made and natural disasters is the creation, implementation and assessment of a community’s EOP.

What is the most devastating natural disaster known? Hurricanes are one of the most catastrophic and natural events to ever be experienced. They can be up to 600 miles across and have wind speed of 75 to 200 mph. Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina happened to be two of the most devastating hurricanes in history.
Definition of disaster- Disaster can be defined as a state of extreme ruin and misfortune.
For families, teamwork takes on a greater importance because the well being, health, and security of its members are on the line. To accomplish those objectives that affect our family as a whole, my husband and I first establish a clear goal or outcome. Often, this discussion requires give and take, as we will both view the issue differently. Once we have reached a consensus, we will then ascertain how we hope to accomplish the outcome and by what time. Once we delineated these steps, we then decide who will perform each one. Understanding our roles in accomplishing these objectives allows us to focus on what we do best, as individuals, and allows us to capitalize on these strengths while minimizing our weaknesses. Then we set out to do our part to the best of our abilities. During this process, we engage in constant communication; communication in teamwork is critical to the team’s success. Team members must understand how others are progressing in their roles and issues they may be facing so he or she can assist as needed. My husband and I try our best to stay abreast of our progress so that we can make modifications to our plan/objective should they be
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is an organization of the United States Department of Homeland Security, initially formed by Presidential Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1978 and applied by two Executive Orders on April 1, 1979. The initial first response to a disaster is the job of local emergency services with the nearby help of the surrounding sources. A major disaster can be a result of tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods. The event must be absolutely more than the state or local governments can handle alone. If confirmed, funding comes from the President's Disaster Relief Fund, managed by FEMA and the disaster aid programs of other joining federal agencies.
Every year in the United States hundreds of inmates are released into society with no hope of making it. Most of them come to place in life were they believe that no one cares for them. Many will soon find themselves with nowhere to go and will nothing to eat. They will struggle to find work in an economy where even none felons struggle to find employment. Some of them will resort to living on the streets and some will go back to committing crimes, because it is better inside of the prison than it is in the free world. But some of these people will find help in religious organizations that will help provide them with meals, clothes, and try to help them find jobs. Throughout the country religious groups have come together to provide these men and women a way out of this kind life and help them get onto their feet. Ministers work closely with offenders to help them with social behaviors, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse. With dwindling resources, many states have turned to religious groups to help resolve the high recidivism rate. And these churches that have a desire to reach this group have a major effect on these lives that they interact with. Many churches who have been involved in this type of programs have seen an amazing transformation in these individuals. This essay will explore the role and effects of prison ministry on the recidivism rates of inmate and how the positive effects out weight the negative implications that have arrived.
An example of a really bad natural disaster would be with the Aztecs. One night a comet came and burned one of the Aztecs most holy temples and it flooded the mexico river making many flee and the civilization break up because everyone was scared of this empire collapsing.“We must flee far away from this city!(PBS).”This quote is an example of how everyone panicked and fled leaving the empire weak with not as many farmers and workers. This then could’ve easily lead to the fall of the Aztecs because their empire is flooded and they don’t have enough people to help work and fight in the army. Another example is with the Mongols when they tried to attack Japan and lost a huge part of their army and ships to typhoons. They wanted to keep attacking in the night instead of just anchoring, which ran them right into a huge typhoon. This then left them vulnerable to other empires attacking them as wells as leaving them weak, and without a huge part of their army. “Straight into the arms of an approaching typhoon. (Mongol invasion of Japan).”This easily shows how the Mongols really ruined there fighting force by running into a typhoon. Now not only did they lose part of their army and ships, but they lost all of the riches the might’ve earned by looting and taking over Japan. My last example is with Greece. In recent studies it has shown that a natural disaster like a 300 year drought has hurt the city and made it almost impossible to grow crops which would’ve killed everyone living their. “A 300-year drought may have caused the demise of several Mediterranean cultures, including ancient Greece, new research suggests.(Ghose)” This quote clearly explains how Greece might’ve fallen from a drought, which would’ve given them no crops, no drinking water, and no water to raise livestock. This is one big theory that might solve why Greece fell. A natural disaster can set any empire or
Education of all personnel is key. Simulations like the Franklin County are great sources. Schools, hospitals, public and private companies to consider preforming drills or simulations in preparation for disasters such as. Many counties have such drills which sometime involve local hospitals, emergency personnel, and local high school students acting like victims with certain issues like head injury, burns, and other injuries which can occur. The television and radios do emergency testing which reminds watchers monthly the sound and the protocol that occurs in an emergency.
Natural Disasters can occur anywhere at anytime. Some are more predictable than others, but they all bring hardship to everyone’s life. Examples of natural disasters are Earthquakes (Haiti 2010), Tornadoes, Tsunami, Hurricanes, Wild Fires, Winter Storms, Heat waves, Mudslides and Floods. Regardless of what kind of disaster occurs, bottom line, everyone needs to be prepared mentally and physically to deal with the aftermath. Education is the first step to prepare you to deal with any major disaster. Three of the major disasters that can potentially disrupt normal day to day operations in our lives, are Hurricanes, Tsunamis and Tornadoes.
There are different types and causes of disasters: man-made, natural and a combination. Man-made disasters are caused by human error or human actions that cause harm to the environment, and people (Baack & Alfred, 2013). Natural disasters are caused by nature, a hurricane for example, and a combination of NA-TECH (natural-technological). Examples are earthquakes that cause structural damage such as a collapse of a bridge (Nies & McEwen, 2011). Communities must have effective emergency preparedness in place to reduce the casualties of a disaster.
The least violent type of natural disasters is the flood; it is one of the most frequent hazards. A flood can affect local areas or a very large area affecting entire river deltas. Not all foods are alike, some of them develop slowly over a period days and some of them occur in a matter of minutes. The floods that develop quickly are known as flash floods; flash floods have a dangerous wall of thunderous water that carries rocks, mud and other different debris. If you live in a low-lying area near water you more prone to flooding, the smallest streams, gullies, creeks, and streambeds can cause a flood. Floods are often not a common thought when you think of a natural disaster, but they can be fatal, destroy homes, businesses, and roads, happen when you least expect, and happen when you are not prepared (FEMA:Flood). An extreme example of this type of natural disaster is the flood in eastern Australia last month; the flood, which lasted for weeks, caused thirty dea...
The increase in unpredictable natural disasters events for a decade has led to put the disaster preparedness as a central issue in disaster management. Disaster preparedness reduces the risk of loss lives and injuries and increases a capacity for coping when hazard occurs. Considering the value of the preparatory behavior, governments, local, national and international institutions and non-government organizations made some efforts in promoting disaster preparedness. However, although a number of resources have been expended in an effort to promote behavioural preparedness, a common finding in research on natural disaster is that people fail to take preparation for such disaster events (Paton, 2005; Shaw 2004; Spittal, et.al, 2005; Tierney, 1993; Kenny, 2009; Kapucu, 2008; Coppola and Maloney, 2009). For example, the fact that nearly 91% of Americans live in a moderate to high risk of natural disasters, only 16% take a preparation for natural disaster (Ripley, 2006).
