With the modern globalization of our world and the many people that seek to find employment in the areas outside of their social and cultural norms, we find that there are many great benefits to being involved in a globalized industry. While there are many benefits and rewards to working abroad, one of the big things that individuals do not always expect is the culture shock experienced by moving and living in another country. With the expanding businesses in the world, there is no telling where a manager may end up within any part of the world as a leader of a company. With this, there is the joy of being in a new environment, the progress of the individual’s career, and the many financial benefits of taking on a larger responsibility this position abroad. What most people are unaware of are the many “little things, from navigating a grocery store in a foreign language to not knowing the appropriate moment to shake hands with a business partner” (Lindegren). There are all of these small things that pop up when moving abroad and finding that the social norms that you are used are no longer the norms. Globalization has many implications for leadership today and in the future. Global perspectives are being spread to the farthest points in the world and to the most isolated people. People of different cultures come to the United States daily to live, travel, or engage in business. Leaders must respond to this challenge of globalization so they can effectively reach out to as many people as possible. Opening themselves to the world's changes allows leaders to compare and contrast their culture with the arts, language, beliefs, customs, philosophies, and ways of living of other people. By observing and questioning another culture, leaders can understand the origin of an individual's viewpoints and become more sensitive to the cultural needs of that individual. Companies that operate abroad are realizing that using expatriate employees is not a permanent solution. They are often expensive, and are not capable of translating their skills into the new environment. One of the biggest hindrances to people living in a new culture is the initial culture-shock that people experience, as well as the culture-stress that occurs as time progresses. When a person enters a new culture, there are many noticeable differences from his/her own culture. These differences have been labelled culture-shock and culture-stress. It is the initial differences, which is called culture-shock, that often cause worry, fear, and sometimes withdrawl. However, these can be easily overcome through preparation and changes in attitude. As time progresses, there will be other issues that will start to appear that can become even more troublesome; these are called culture-stresses. The problem with culture-stress is that it is a lot more difficult to overcome. Conveniently there are a number of steps that can be taken in order to minimize the effects of both culture-shock and culture-stress. Missionaries often feel the effects of culture-shock and culture-stress the more than at other people as they normally do not have the support structure that other people do. In order for missionaries to adapt to the new cultures, they must prepare ahead of time.
A major challenge of doing business internationally is to adapt effectively to different culture. Such adaptation requires an understanding of cultural diversity, perceptions, stereotypes, and values (Hodgett &Luthans, 2005). Doing business overseas has its challenges as well as it rewards.
In the present day organisations are expanding their operations to different countries of the world. They therefore need people to work there “expatriates”. Once the international assignment is completed, the expatriates have got to go back home, the process of repatriation begins. Even though most expatriates and managers presuppose that the repatriation process will be easy seeing as the employee is just returning home, research has substantiated that this is a tricky process. There is indication that it could be more difficult to adjust to the home environment as opposed to adjusting to life in a foreign nation.
