Hair dye is usually a soluble substance for staining or colouring hair. There are mainly two types of hair dye which are fully chemical based, partially chemical and natural based dyes. Under chemically based hair dyes there are permanent, demi-permanent, semi-permanent and temporary hair dyes. On the other hand, natural hair dyes are of two types which are henna based and organic based.
Henna is a plant that grows in dry, hot climates. When its leaves are harvested, dried and powdered and then mixed with a mildly acidic liquid, it will stain skin, hair, and fingernails. Like demi-permanent dye, it will deposit colour and wear-down over lots of time if it is not reapplied. Because henna comes from a plant, it is said to be a healthier option for hair colour.
Organic hair dyes are composed of natural ingredients but almost all use active ingredients or chemicals that were synthesized in a laboratory.
2. Chemical Concepts
The following are the basic equations of chemical based hair dye and the examples of their chemical structures.
C11H14N5Cl is the generally accepted chemical formula for hair dye.
3. Point of Views
3.1 Ammonia Based
Advantages:
Ammonia has the ability to alter hair colour without washing out after only a few shampoos. Ammonia also allows the colour to easily enter the cortex by raising the pH of the hair sufficiently so as to open the cuticle and allow the colour to enter the cortex of the hair. In addition, ammonia neutralizes the existing pigments to a greater degree, which happens when ammonia is mixed with peroxide.
Disadvantages:
Although, the colour swells the cuticle to easily enter the cortex, there is significant protein and moisture loss. This is how the hair is damaged during colouring when using a...

...e additional coating henna adds to strands, which will invariably thicken hair strands, this can be a disadvantage. This means that new hair growth will have a different texture and structure to the hair treated with henna. Which if the henna treatments are not continued on the new growth will lead to a demarcation line or point on the hair strands, this demarcation point or line becomes a point of weakness. Just like someone with chemically processed hair, this issue of two hair types can lead to excessive breakage and/or damage of the hair.
4. Conclusion
Henna dye would seem like a better choice of hair dye, taking into account its natural based composition and positive impact to health of the scalp. However, further development and awareness promotion is needed in this range of dyes to overcome its shortcomings and make it more appealing to the general consumer.
According to 10 Weird and Wacky Beauty Facts by Andrea Lavinthal, in ancient Greece, the most sought-after hair color was blond. Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. They also washed their locks with a mixture of ashes, olive oil, and water. She also explained how “it was a shame that extension weren’t available during the Heian period when a Japanese woman’s beauty was judges by the length of her hair, since the ideal was considered almost two feet longer than her waist. We’re assuming that ponytails were a popular hairstyle back then.” There are many other crazy facts about beauty facts like Vaseline makes your eyelashes grow and can take off makeup, or if your finger nails are discolored from using dark polish, use a slice of lemon on them and they will regain their color (The beauty magazine, Roselyn Miller, pg. 67). Going into the field of Cosmetology helps you express yourself and it brings out your inner creativity. That is one of the many reason I love this line of work, because when I do hair it lets me express myself while creating a hairstyle of my own. The first time I started doing hair was when I was about 10 or 11, I was a natural! I want to be able to know my clients and exactly what will look right on my clients and read people, so I would know what they do like just by talking to them. ...on. Treatments should be applied to the hair as a protector before the chemicals are added because they can apply serious damage to the healthy hair. If the hair isn’t treated properly with several chemicals being added such as relaxers or dye, the hair can easily become dry, brittle, and create many split ends throughout your hair even rising up to the roots. As I was doing my research paper I did experience some difficulties because I didn’t stick with one topic in the cosmetology field like hairstyling, coloring hair, nails, and even trimming of the hair so that caused me to even research harder, but it’s nothing wrong with challenging yourself at times.
Hair coloring takes extensive scientific knowledge and careful planning. It is very important for the colorist to make sure they don’t do too much damage to their clients’ hair. 9). Toselli noted that Egyptian women used henna to color their nails (2009). The most notable color used to paint their nails was red. However, the color red was reserved for women of power. One example of such women, is Cleopatra, who “…favored a deep rust red” (Toselli, p.9). Women of lower stations “…were permitted only pale hues” (Toselli, p.9). Pales hues refers to light colors. Over the years different ingredients were utilized to create nail stain, varnish all otherwise known as nail polish. According to Toselli, the mixture of Arabic gum, egg whites, gelatin, and beeswax was used by the Chinese. “They also used a mixture of pulped rose for color, or orchid and impatiens petals combined with alum, which, when applied to mails overnight, left a pinkish, reddish stain” (Toselli, p.9). Eventually, ingredients included: scented red oils, powders and creams. It was by accident that it was discovered that “…boiling nitrocellulose made it soluble in organic
This experiment demonstrated the ability of agarose gel electrophoresis to separate the mixture of dyes into their individual components by the application of a combination of dyes to the same sample well. The experiment effectively demonstrated that the dyes where different in structure, energy, and composition. Most of the dyes where negatively charged at neutral pHs and only one with positive charge. The positive charge one moved an opposite direction compared to the other dyes.
According to the The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, a dye is a “synthetic or natural coloring used to color various materials.” Today, many dyes are used in foods all around the world. As of January 2014, the United States Food and Drug Administration certifies nine different dyes-Blue 1, 2; Green 3; Red 3, 5, 6, 40; Yellow 5 and 6 (Beil). Blue dyes are usually found in ice creams, blueberry-flavored foods, and baked goods. Red dyes are often in candies, cookies, and chips. Cheeses and buttered treats contain yellow dyes while green dyes are not as common in food products but are in fruit-flavored candies. Natural colored foods could be strawberries or ketchup. Even though artificial colorings are allowed, the amount used in foods is limited. European countries have conducted research and banned all dyes from being added to their foods. These countries believe dyes pose as a health threat. Some citizens from the United States have said dyes are not necessary in foods and others wish that dyes will still be used in their favorite foods. However you look at it, dyes being used in foods is a very controversial health problem today.
When approaching the topic of hair chemistry, one may think about the question, where does hair come from? Saclike holes called follicles are located all over the human body. At the bottom of these follicles are a cluster of papilla responsible for the growth of hair. As the papilla, otherwise known as hair bulbs reproduce to make new hair cells, the old ones are pushed up towards the surface of the skin causing the hair to grow longer. This may seem like a simple concept to grasp. However, the process of hair growth is a little more in depth.
