According to 10 Weird and Wacky Beauty Facts by Andrea Lavinthal, in ancient Greece, the most sought-after hair color was blond. Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. They also washed their locks with a mixture of ashes, olive oil, and water. She also explained how “it was a shame that extension weren’t available during the Heian period when a Japanese woman’s beauty was judges by the length of her hair, since the ideal was considered almost two feet longer than her waist. We’re assuming that ponytails were a popular hairstyle back then.” There are many other crazy facts about beauty facts like Vaseline makes your eyelashes grow and can take off makeup, or if your finger nails are discolored from using dark polish, use a slice of lemon on them and they will regain their color (The beauty magazine, Roselyn Miller, pg. 67). Going into the field of Cosmetology helps you express yourself and it brings out your inner creativity. That is one of the many reason I love this line of work, because when I do hair it lets me express myself while creating a hairstyle of my own. The first time I started doing hair was when I was about 10 or 11, I was a natural! I want to be able to know my clients and exactly what will look right on my clients and read people, so I would know what they do like just by talking to them. I need to learn to separate family from business. I do know some things about this field I before this assignment that cosmetology is not just about doing hair, it’s also about learning about the Skin; Doing make up, eye lashes, etc. You also learn about nails; doing a...

In my case I would love to take them all, even though I love doing hair I would also love to learn how to do all of the other things and express my creative side. I know I

When we look into the mirror, we are constantly picking at our insecurities; our stomach, thighs, face, and our body figure. Society has hammered into our brains that there is only one right way of looking. Society disregards that there are many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Then society makes us believe that corporations can shove detrimental products to fix our imperfection. As a consequence, we blame media for putting all the negative ideas into women’s brain. It is not wrong to say that they are in part responsible, but we can’t make this issue go away until we talk about patriarchy. In the article Am I Thin Enough Yet? Hesse-Biber argues that women are constantly concerned about their looks and if they are categorized as “beautiful” by society. These ideas are encouraged by corporations that sell things for us to achieve “beautiful” but the idea is a result of patriarchy. Hesse-Biber suggests that if we want to get rid of these ideas we need to tackle patriarchy before placing all the blame on capitalism.

Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.
Hair dyeing became popular in the 1950’s, at that time, about 7% of American women chemically colored their hair. Today, about 75% of American women chemically change the color of their locks. Every day, new techniques and styles are added to the world of hair. Hair Colorists spend their time helping their clients change their look and add some fresh pigment to their clients’ faded strands. Although professional hair coloring has its challenges, hair colorists have a wide variety of creative outlets, have close personal connections with their clients and help them to build self-confidence and aid them in expressing their individuality.
Towards the end, you’ll get a touch of the job reflection and outlook. A lot of great information is listed, so there should be plenty of it learned. Cosmetology has been around since the ancient times and the Egyptians. It was the Egyptian women who gave a lot of importance to hair care, nails, makeup, and overall beauty. The natural look changed from the reverted look to the cosmetic look.
Cosmetology has existed even before Ancient Egypt established formal cosmetology. Ancient Egypt established formal cosmetology when women of the royal courts would seek help styling their hair and applying different sorts of skin creams. In the past, many women would create their own hair, skin, and nail products that many modern day cosmetologists rarely make. They choose to just order it and pay for it. Cosmetology includes hair care, skin care, and nail care. They are all three different types of ways to enhance human’s looks. There is a lot to know about cosmetology such as the history of cosmetology, the benefits of cosmetology, and the training and requirements cosmetology has.
Almost 250 years of slavery and anti-blackness within the United States has created a divide in what type of hair is acceptable. According to Cynthia L. Robinson, “Black hair texture is graded” (Robinson 2011). Precisely, this means that a Black woman has either good hair or bad hair. Good hair has a resemblance of European hair texture, meaning straight and wavy curls. Good hair also diminishes the look of African ancestry. Bad is the complete opposite. The texture is kinky, coiled, and thick, giving the appearance of short hair (Robinson 2011). Hair that bears a resemblance to Eurocentric beauty standards is more beautiful and makes the individual with that hair type more beautiful as well (Robinson
The practice of improving the beauty of others may seem insignificant to some but for those in process of studying the cosmetology industry take great pride in the work they hope to produce. Hair stylist and nail technicians improve the way people look and feel about oneself to better improve self confidence; cosmetologist strive to do the best they can to achieve the look that their client may be searching for. However, these techniques must be taught thoroughly and without the proper teaching techniques, the upcoming cosmetologist may feel behind and uncertain about their abilities when performing on clients. Without the proper and professional ways of teaching, the student struggle to ever gain success in the business; this business builds only from the repetition of great work and failing to achieve the overall style of the desired look from the client will result in a failing business. The search of finding a successful and up to date school requires more work than one may assume.
Cosmetology is the study and practice of beautification (History). The word cosmetology comes from the Roman word “cosmetae” (Merriam-Webster). The word “cosmetae” means woman's valet; slave responsible for the adornment of his mistress (worldofdictionary). It has been said that the first evidence of makeup came from portraits and earrings of kings and priest (History). Starting in Renaissance, women, and men had beauty secrets and things they did to make themselves more attractive. One secret woman used was to cover smallpox scars. Women used “beauty patches” to cover them up (modesmakeup). Also, a big forehead was beautiful during this time, women shaved their widow’s peak because a big forehead was considered beautiful (beautythroughages). It was also said that blonde hair was very beautiful and popular in the 1500’s in Florence, throughout England (beautybiz). Women’s cosmetics were made from very different things than they are today, a mixture of white lead and
The beauty industry, a $265 billion dollar global market of products such as cosmetic appliances and services like plastic surgery grows exponentially each moment (The history of the beauty industry, 2014). As an individual's appearance escalates in importance, cosmetics play an increasingly crucial aspect in a person’s self-perception. In fact, even individuals aware of detriments like cutaneous deformities and neurological impairments use cosmetics because of potential leverages that come in the form of higher wages, and job acceptance rates (Shetty, 2017). In this sense, it is becoming progressively more important for an individual to retain their appearance through the means of cosmetics (Shetty, 2017). As the issue stands, one of the most
Before I began to do my search process, I made a list and wrote down the things I knew, and certain keywords I could use to find my information. Finding my sources for my research paper wasn't a difficult process for me. I began by typing the question, “new technology in the beauty industry” in the Google search bar. I had a lot of different sources appear, that allowed me to have variety of sources that I needed for my paper.
