As an individual's appearance escalates in importance, cosmetics play an increasingly crucial aspect in a person’s self-perception. In fact, even individuals aware of detriments like cutaneous deformities and neurological impairments use cosmetics because of potential leverages that come in the form of higher wages, and job acceptance rates (Shetty, 2017). In the industry of cosmetology there has been women that have played an important role. Like Sarah Breedlove, who later became known as Madam C.J. Walker was America’s first African American female millionaire. She was born poor and orphaned, but later built her own business of manufacture hair products. A scalp infection lead her to the creation of her products. Like many women she struggled to find the solution to her problem, after she tried thousands of products, soon she started loosing her hair. While sleeping she had a dream of a man advising her of ingredients she needed to mix. She got up the next morning and did as her dream demanded. To her surprise this product had worked, she then begun selling her unique formula (“Beauty”). Who would have thought a women could have became so successful. They say dreams can lead you to great accomplishments and this was the case of Sarah Breedlove. Jane Iredale introduced the full line of cosmetics, she wanted to create cosmetics that were beneficial to the skin. The biology of beauty is judging people on whether they are either ugly or beautiful, attractive or unattractive. When people are judging by their looks and others by the way you dress. People all over the world look at magazines saying that I wish I was this model or I should try this for my body. I wonder if this product will work for my body or skin. They say that when they are looking in the magazines and other papers that have make up or they just buy a whole bunch of products. If the products don’t work they will just spend amount of money just to be thrown in the trash but some people keep it just in case they need it again. Famous people like actors, artists, and models get injections in their faces or tell the doctors to remove any type of fat from their body just to be in a movie or show they want to look skinny and pretty in.

It also pressures women to constantly try and strive towards this ‘beauty myth’ the media have constructed and make men’s expectations of women’s beauty unattainable, however this is how the media has represented women as for years, Bodyshockers and 10 Years Younger, are just two examples of this. To this extent cosmetic surgery could be considered to be an obligation rather than a choice due to how the media has represented this now normalized technology of science.

In the short reading, The Cunning of Cosmetics, by Jeffrey Kipnis, he begins by explaining what architecture is reacting to and how it effects the direction it is going in.
