Introduction
I view a leader as a dependable person that motivates and encourages others to perform to the best of their ability. Being a leader means you lead by example so that others are inspired to follow you (Cite). Leaders exist in our everyday lives, regardless if they assume the title or not. Some of these leaders are family, peers, friends, co-workers and professors. Modeling leaders and training in different areas at my past jobs have allowed me to excel in areas of communication, customer service and time management. These individuals gave me the drive to be a better person and achieve excellent results doing everyday tasks. As a result, I could count on these people for help if I am unsure of my job responsibilities and they would

It turns out I am a natural born leader and in recent years I am always chosen as the group leader on group projects. My personality type embodies the gifts of charisma, confidence and project authority in a way that draws people together behind a common goal (Cite). I enjoy taking on a challenge and I work well under pressure. Furthermore, I can be directive leader (Cite) to team members who do not complete their assigned tasks on time. On the other hand, I am often supportive and helpful to team members who are having difficulties with their part of the project (Cite). However, I remember my early childhood consisted mainly of reading books, pretty much whatever I could get my hands on. My favourite books were the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy’s collection. I participated in extracurricular activities at school but I never volunteered for a leadership position as I was very soft-spoken and shy. I was very attentive in primary school with my favourite subject being mathematics that I excelled greatly it. My fifth-grade teacher saw my potential and signed me up for a math competition in my region where our team placed second. This was my first chance competing at a national level and the success boost my confidence level to get involved in other activities. In grade six I was elected as the secretary for the school Builder’s Club and we entered a drama recital where our team won the competition. During this …show more content…
I joined the school athletics team and I was team leader at my community church youth group. I was often told that I was the smallest in the group but when I spoke I got everyone’s attention including the adults. My athletics team coach left us on our own most of the time so that we were able to work independently and supervise the newer members of the team. My second favourite part of high school was visual arts class. This was where all creativity and imaginations came to life and the instructors were our number one fan. I remember being able to create art portfolios and display them for the rest of the school to view. Having friends stop by after school or on break time to view our creativity inspired me. This type of motivation encouraged me to work harder and achieve more. I also realized that I was a very fast learner and my peers often looked to me to explain coursework that they were having difficulty with. My peers inspired me form an after-school group that provided a helping hand to others who needed it. I was a well-known to most of my instructors and I was often asked to provide assist in their classes. Based on the leadership test I took online, I was deemed to be a charismatic leader (Cite). I envision a clear direction and communicate plans in a way that gets everyone on board. My charismatic leadership trait allows me to convince and persuade others
My passion for leadership began in middle school, when I learned that I felt pride in taking on new challenges in leading organizations and activities. Throughout my middle school years, my leadership involvement began through being president of the National Junior Honor Society, becoming a finalist multiple times in various student congress debate competitions, and ultimately being awarded the
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
According to Dictionary.com, a leader is a person who guides or directs a group, but I believe there is so much more meaning to that. It takes key qualities to be a true leader. A leader should be self-motivated, encouraging, ambitious and determined; they should carry as sense of critical thinking and optimism in all that they do. Most imprtantly, Leaders are strategic thinkers; they are constantly thinking about how their ideas, thoughts and actions can affect the world. People who are leaders are visionary people because they look for the "big picture". Before this class, I would have said that there are plenty of synonyms for a leader thinking that words like manager, director, or ruler would suffice. I have learned now that those words don't even come close to the definition of a leader. A leader does things with purpose and has a passion for what they do and who they serve. A manager or director would just want to get the job done without looking at the beauty of it.
What is a leader? Who are chosen to be leader, and why are they chosen? What set these certain individuals aside from everyone else? A leader is someone who can encourage even those with feeble hearts, insecure souls and self-doubting minds. A leader takes not only their vision but everyone’s vision and create one beautiful creation that is seen throughout the world. My experiences with leadership range from the worst to the best. Once holding a great leadership position myself, I can testify the benefits of great leadership and the disadvantages of horrible leadership. Through my experience with great leadership and the effects on the people, it seemed to the naked eye that everyone was thinking the same thing at the same time. In actually it was the leader uniting the members together on one common chord to produce a sound that would remain in the souls. A leader is someone who not only leads, but also encourages people to do their best, share a collectively common idea or passion with a group, and challenge the process of a traditional style.
As I have developed in my job, school, and as a person, I found that I enjoyed helping others and want to become a leader. This paper will further describe how my experiences and background have shaped the leader I am today.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leaders, an individual that people look up to for direction, inspiration, and guidance in life. Passion, influential, reliability, a vision, etc. These traits along with many more, are the things that make leaders great and successful. Everyone has different personality traits that make us capable of being leaders in this world and I learned that throughout this course. Everyone is different, whether good or bad, ethical or unethical, everyone has a leadership style all their own. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader (John Quincy Adams).”
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Has perception of charismatic leadership changed the playing field for the types of leaders that organizations are in search of? Many feel that the weight of the leader’s charisma as the focus of leadership needs to be re-examined. As a result, the charismatic leader may be viewed probably as one of the most contentious leadership styles because of the focus on the leader’s personal characteristics, often defining them as narcissists. Given the large number of narcissists at the helm or corporations today, the challenge facing organizations is to ensure that such leaders do not self-destruct or lead the company to disaster (Maccoby, 2000).
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
What is a leader? When thinking of this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position. –Brian Tracy. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills come from life experiences, education and employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs, knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win". A Leader is a person who has a strong personality and who has an ability to manage people and work. He is also the person who is able to direct people .Usually a leaders has a lot of attributes that
I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal. However, there were some well known introverts such Einstein, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela that obviously were successful leaders and innovators with a mission that suited them. I am motivated to lead if the mission has integrity and is an area of interest to me. Those factors feed my extroverted side. I like to improve systems and processes; one can put specialized projects and problems in front of me or ask me to create a growth opportunity and I will run with it. Our textbook The Art of Leadership by George Manning/Kent Curtis describes the most important traits of leadership as the need for achievement, possessing intelligence, self confidence, initiative, supervisory ability, and decisiveness (Manning). I am an intelligent problem solver and I can see many paths for growth. With right mission I can be very self- confident, I show initiative and supervisory ability. I can sometimes be slow on decisiveness so I try to identify
Grade 11 camp was an unforgettable experience which definitely tested my strength, both mentally and physically. In one of the many challenging activities, the cohort was split into different groups and each group was made to push an army truck down a road. We were given a break every 20 minutes, and I found it very satisfying to, even when on a ‘break’, encourage my peers and lead them through such a physically and mentally exhausting challenge. Other challenges involved us crawling through small, confined tunnels. I found great contentment in cheering people on and helping others to overcome their fears. It was a great experience to learn to lead better as it required a lot of team effort and mental fortitude to make it through all activities of the camp. Following the camp week, on the bus trip home I was able to reflect on different styles of leadership and how I developed. I personally found that I was best developed to lead by example rather than just instruction to my peers. I believe that this style of leadership encourages others to be involved and enthusiastic even when they are challenged. It is my desire to apply leadership skills that I acquired during grade 11 camp to various circumstances during studying and further into the workplace. I am looking to apply these leadership skills as while studying science and engineering, I have heard many group projects and activities are to be undertaken. This is similar to engineering in the workforce where every project can have dozens if not hundreds of engineers working together. I find the leadership skills will assist in really reaching a peak in the workplace to develop a lot of new and exciting things.
