Grendel comments, “All order, I've come to understand, is theoretical, unreal — a harmless, sensible, smiling mask men slide between the two great, dark realities, the self and the world — two snake pits” (138). This quote expresses Grendel’s thoughts and feelings as he comes to terms with his niche in the Scyldings community in the novel Grendel, by John Gardner. In the novel, Grendel deals with his inner demons as he struggles to define himself among the humans and animals he encounters. ?Eventually, the constant ridicule from the people and even animals overpower Grendel, and he becomes his own worst enemy. Even a doe trembles at the sight of him, showing the impact his looks have on the way others perceive him.
