This week Mrs. Yelena Tramontana walked me through the scheduling process of managers and employees. She demonstrated how she or one of the other operation managers goes about scheduling employees for a month ahead of time. The scheduling is done though a computer mediated device primarily, but also requires verbal communication among managers and employees.

In the “Interior Life”, Annie Dillard discusses the minds process of realizing the difference between imagination and reality. Dillard begins her narrative by recounting the childhood memory of an oblong shaped light that invaded her room every night, terrorizing her with the possibility of death. Kroger’s formal communication structure or flow utilized within the chain of command defined by the organizations CEO uses the three formal channels and types of information that is conveyed in a downward, upward, and horizontal communication style. This is used by the top CEO, Rodney McMullen, in a downward style through the numerous chains of command, finally reaching all the way to the various store brands and store level management. Downward communication, comes from the top CEO level and is communicated down through the chains of command. In Dillard’s essay “Living Like Weasels”, she takes her desires of wanting a life with tranquility and compares her desires, to a weasel’s life of instinct. When we look at a weasel’s character, we can see that it is the opposite of serenity. Unlike a human, a weasel resides in the wilderness, typically away from suburbia. A weasel hunts for its food and is a fearsome hunter. While a weasel may be small and appear cute they, are in fact very dangerous, for instance: if a weasel were to ‘latch’ himself or herself on to you, the weasel would much rather face death than let go. Dillard describes the boastfulness of the weasel when she shared the story of the shooter that had found the weasel’s cadaver still attached to the eagle he had shot.
Moreover, the company has placed great significance on open and honest communications with the employees on many levels. After reading and easily understanding the tasks given to them, Mason and Jonas began right away. Jonas, my competitive child was racing against the clock, trying to beat the allotted time that I had given them in an attempt to prove me wrong. When working at Borders Books as an assistant manager I experienced a lot of downward communication. The president, vice president, top-level managers, etc. would communicate a decision to my general manager. My general manager would then communicate that decision to the assistant managers, which I am one of. Our job would be to install this communicated decision to all of the employees. If the decision was communicated well, this form of communication worked well, if not it did not.

Communication which flows from the superiors to subordinates is known as downward communication means a process of starting communication process from upper level to lower level. Group leaders and managers use it to assign goal, provide jod instruction, explain policies and offer other feedback about performance. Managers can do this in various ways such as via speeches, messages in newsletter, e-mails, leaflets, bulletin boards, memos and others. When the managers of the organization assign goals to their employees, they are using downward communication.
