Since the two languages belong to two simple different linguistic families. Moreover, mother tongue and inconsistency of some English sounds are also factors that influence learning English pronunciation. These difficulties lead to mispronunciation. For instance: the Arabic and English phonological systems are totally different, not only in the range of sounds used, but in the emphasis placed on vowels and consonants in meaning. While English has 22 vowels and diphthongs, Arabic has only eight vowels and diphthongs. I met a group of learners of English language have some difficulties in English pronunciation. They told me that whenever they spoke to a native speaker, he/she kept asking them what? What? They would repeat their sentence several times. Finally he/she would say ah-ha! And then repeat their sentence, using their same words. My Egyptian friends face certain problems related to pronunciation. They confuse between /p/ and /b/ e.g. words like (pie-buy). They pronounce /b/ instead of /p/ and vice verse. They replace sounds that they don’t have in their native language with other sounds which are close to them. First: Watch an English movie. You should begin watching with subtitles, this help you to practice your listening, speaking and reading. Then try to watch without subtitles. According to Bursuck & Damer (2011) phonemes are “the smallest individual sounds in words spoken.” Phonemic awareness is the “ability to hear the phonemes and manipulate the sounds” (p. 41). Phonemic awareness is essential because without the ability students are not able to manipulate the sounds. According to the National Institute for Literacy (2007), “students with poor phonics skills prevent themselves from reading grade-level text and are unable to build their vocabulary” (p.5) Agreeing with the importance of phonemic awareness, Shapiro and Solity attempted to use whole class instruction to improve students’ phonological awareness. The intervention showed that whole class instruction assisted not only the students with poor phonemic awareness, but also on-level developing readers.

It is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person’s personality, self image, knowledge of the world, ability to reason, skill to express thoughts in real-time (Luoma, 2004: ix). These days, due to the global trend of internationalisation, the ability to communicate in English is needed as an essential skill. Whenever the international exchange happens, the use of spoken English entails. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak to the level of a native speaker. They have to perfectly understand the sound system of English, have almost instant access to proper vocabulary and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they also have to perceive what is being said to them and need to be able to respond appropriately to acquire amiable relations or to accomplish their communicative goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). Therefore, non-native English speakers encounter these barriers and they are subject to make mistakes often. In relation to this matter, this essay argues that there are socio-cultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect non-native speakers’ communication in English. It provides analysis of several different situations when the use of spoken English has generated miscommunication problems in regards to author’s personal experience.
