The proper use of pronunciation is what helps a message be understood easily by other fluent English speakers. Often times, an ELL student can struggle with forming a word correctly and may cause a word to be pronounced as a different, but similarly sounding word. One example of how the pronunciation of a word can cause a message to be unclear a Spanish speaker pronouncing “kitchen” as “chicken”. These two words are very close in sound, but each word has a completely different meaning. A mother that asks a child to “please clean the kitchen” greatly differs from the mispronounced word that has changed the sentence to “please clean the chicken”. There are many speech therapy courses that are offered in schools that will improve a child’s ability to speak productively. In the oral language speech by ELL student Tania, the Spanish student faces challenges while pronouncing “stories about magic, vampires “. These impediments can be worked on and improved over time. The grading scale of pronunciation on a rubric can range from insufficient in the result of being virtually unintelligent; to excellent, being that it pleasantly uses intonation and pronunciation as accurately as a native speaker
Another benefit can be socially/politically. For example, knowing english can help communicate with other people. Being able to speak english would help feel more comfortable around other people. Giving the opportunity of making new friends. Also B. Miller from “What Are the Benefits of Learning English?”says that many websites are mainly available in only English, and anyone that doesn't know to read english would have a problem in understanding it. In “Immigrants Should Learn English” Havovi Cooper says, “Immigrants are also particularly vulnerable in a new environment, so it’s even more important for them to know english before choosing the U.S. as their homeland so they can be well-versed in their rights and the laws protecting them.”
With the rapid economic development, more and more people try to immigrate to America and trying to learn English. Some parents would like their children just speaking English. However, there are some parents tend to keep their native language and teach to their children, in order to keep their culture alive. And in my opinion, parents should keep their old language alive.
Bilingual education is important to enforce in schools because it not only helps students but their parents as well. Since their first language is not English, bilingual education will really help them because it not only helps them succeed in mainstream classes that give instructions in English, but also aims to preserve the native language as on is mastering English; they cannot learn if they do not understand what the teacher or professor is saying.
The purpose of this essay is to show why and how learning English is important. English is in our lives everywhere, we can find it when we read a blog, a magazine, a book or the news paper, when we watch videos or movies, when we hear music, when we send an e-mail, English is present. When you travel to different countries you realize that English is the main language spoken around the world. This is important because it helps you understand the diversity of different cultures and to find interesting places.
"By emphasizing the importance of a common language, we safeguard a proud legacy and help to ensure that America's future will be as great as her past." Ronald Reagan described it best. A vital part of any culture is language. Without language, there would be no communication, no conversation, no debate. I believe when immigrants come to America, a crucial part of their acceptance is whether or not they know the English language. In a census done by the US Census Bureau in 2011, it showed that 79% of the population speaks only English at home while only 21% spoke a language other than English at home. Meanwhile, of that 21%, 58.2% spoke English very well (Ryan). This shows how vital the English language is to American culture and how it is imperative for English to be a requirement for immigrants when they come to America. Not only when people immigrate here, but to other countries as well, I believe that it is, in some ways, a common courtesy to learn the native language. In comparison to other countries you can immigrate to, America is one of the best. America
Although some people believe the entire world should speak English, the reality is that all Americans should have some degree of formal education in a foreign language. Foreign language skills could have a positive impact on race relations in America. The number of minorities in America is rapidly increasing. In fact, "minority" groups will soon form a collective "majority" of the citizens of America. Considering the fact that many minority groups speak English as a second language and America has no official language, compulsory foreign language classes are viable options.
English skills are vital to succeeding in life, in terms of education, career, and personal relationships. There are immigrants that come from all over the world to the United States and the hardest thing for them is to learn to master English language skills. Being in a country whose people speak and write in another language is difficult to understand, but it is necessary to master it. Mastering English language skills is the most important ability that immigrants need to learn, so that they can gain employment. Immigrants with strong English skills will be able to find and get a job easier than those that have some or no English skills. There are some jobs that offer employment
Stephen Saylor answers you by saying "a clear pronunciation is paramount to making your message understood" Stephen Saylor. In speaking English with natives or non-natives for different reasons (collage or job interviews, asking for directions, making new friends.... Etc.) usually pronunciation plays a major role and gets a lot of attention, to be honest, it is the first and most noticeable feature of your English, Tomasz P. Szynalski supports this in his article "Why you should study English pronunciation" by saying "When you talk to a person in real life, they may not notice your limited vocabulary or grammar mistakes. But they will notice right away if your pronunciation is good or bad" Tomasz P. Szynalski.
For many years, the thought of English being the official language of the United States has come with a little controversy. Some argue that English should be the official language because it is the most dominant language in the world. Some believe by doing so, it would create a stronger unity among the American people. Proponents believe that although the United States is diverse, it may be too much for the American people to juggle multiple languages. Others believe that English shouldn’t be the official language and instead be one of many prominent languages that are widely used in our nation such as Spanish, French, and Chinese. I believe English should be the official language in the United States. However, I believe more emphasis should be placed on learning new languages especially among youths in school and during developmental stages.
As we know the importance of speaking, especially if the issue is creating our target language shape, we as teachers need to make our learners better english speakers and, of course during this teaching process we need to be aware of their background knowledge and their language levels to be more fruitful to them. Generally to be more succesful in spoken english , we need to teach two crucial things to our learners: one of them is vocabulary another is pronunciation. Lets have a look at what they are !
Even though there are advantages as well as disadvantages, the need for international language for communication, politics, economics and security is necessary and English is the best “language candidate” for that function. English is a language spread all over the world and it is used by millions and millions of speakers. According to my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures but every country must keep their culture and language is a great part of it. In conclusion, language defines identity of a country and everyone should keep their language and explore others.
There are a lot of people who think that the U.S. speaks one language and one language only, English. Having students take the time to learn a new language over the course of years can reduce conflicts between problematic and ignorant people. Diversity in America is what made this country what it is today. People should not be close-minded and believe one language is superior over another. Practicing a few basic words can help a lot if a person is getting around an unfamiliar location in the United States or in another
Also English is the language that consociate the whole World (Pike, 2013). It is important to learn English for being a global citizen - a person that can live anywhere, thrive anywhere, and speak to anyone (Pike, 2013), the more people learn English, the more people can approach to the World. That means different countries can exchange their idea, knowledge and technology by using English. English lead our country to be more developed and wealthy.
