Differences Between Management and Leadership
Management and leadership are often used in the same context, yet they do not mean the
same thing. Managers think incrementally, while leaders think radically. The difference
in the perspectives is that leaders tend to lead with emotion and concern for their
subordinates. Managers tend to follow guidelines and company policies. Managers also
use management functions to achieve their desired goals.
Loyalty is important amongst leaders. Team members tend to be more loyal to their
leaders than their managers. This is due in part to leaders accepting the blame for when
things go wrong, celebrating team/group achievements and giving credit when it is due.
Managers do not interact with their subordinates as much as leaders do. A manager is
someone who must be obeyed and a leader is someone who people choose to follow. The
fact that teams can operate without a leader defines leaders as an asset and not essential
to team success. Managers and leaders may often clash due to difference of opinions and
views. Although a team is knowledgeable on who the manager is, a subordinate may
often appear to be an informal leader. At this point a manager may feel that his or her
authority may be in question. Managers must be able to accept ideas and views from
their subordinates. Although, they (managers) may have the formal education for their
position, it is experience and common knowledge that sets leaders apart from managers.
Management usually consists of people who are experienced in their field, and who have
worked their way up the company. A manager knows how each layer of the system works
and may also possess a good technical knowledge. A leader can be a new arrival to a
company who has bold, fresh, new ideas but might not have experience or wisdom
The role of a leader is to ensure that the desired tasks and guidelines are implemented
throughout the team. Managers can not be everywhere at once, which is why leaders are
often put into place to echo management’s requirements. Leaders are the link between
the team and management. Therefore leaders should show more compassion and

In conclusion, managing and leading are two different ways to organize people.
Although many leaders have a charismatic style to some extent, this does not require a
loud personality. They are always good with people, and quiet styles that give credit to
others (and takes blame on themselves) are very effective at creating the loyalty that great leaders engender.
Although leaders are good with people, this does not mean they are friendly with them. In
order to keep the mystique of leadership, they often retain a degree of separation and
aloofness. This does not mean that leaders do not pay attention to tasks - in fact they are
often very achievement-focused. What they do realize, however, is the importance of
enthusing others to work towards their vision.

Leadership is the act of influencing a group of people to work together on one accord to accomplish a goal. A team leader is a chosen/ appointed person who provides guidance, instruction, direction and purpose to a group of individuals, the team, for the sole objective of achieving a goal or group of mutual goals.
The size of the Titanic made for a few glitches in design. No ship builder had ever attempted to build a ship of this size before. The rudders met requirements, but, the design was out of date. The designers did not think about designing them to allow the Titanic to better maneuver. The standard at the time was a triple screw engine configuration, however this caused the Titanic to be unable to turn while in reverse. This was due to the larger size of the ship. The bow of the ship was stronger and could have possibly with stood a head on collision. The Titanic was equipped with three engines, each one weighed 720 tons. They were heated by burning coal. There were not a sufficient amount of lifeboats on the ship. There were only enough lifeboats to carry half of those people on board. The lifeboats they did have were not boarded to full capacity. Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. Locke believed that the identity of a person could be assigned to the consciousness. He thought that a person would remain the same as long as their consciousness continues to be the same over the course of their life: “Consciousness always accompanies thinking, and makes everyone to be what he calls ‘self’ and thereby distinguishes himself from all other thinking things; in this alone consists personal identity, i.e. the sameness of a rational being; and as far as this consciousness can be extended backwards to any past action or thought, so far reaches the identity of that person” (Essay II.xxvii.9). Locke believes that your body and your personality do not determine your identity. Instead, you can know that a person is the same person as long as their consciousness continues to be the same over the course of their life.

As mentioned earlier, Locke rejected the view that we need to be in the same form as earlier to be the same person. For instance, in a hypothetical sense if a human and a dog were to switch forms, and the human in dog form had the consciousness of the human, which would consist of past memories, then this would result in the same person. Although this example is hypothetical, the impact of memories on identity is paramount, since memory would be considered the psychological criterion- which is basically a psychologically linking relationship between a person at one time with a person in another time, in order to be considered one entity or comprising of the same identity (Jacobson: 55). The psychological criterion is a necessary condition for the theory, because without the memories, people would have multiple identities scattered over an individual’s life
