There are many similarities and many differences between the Jesuits in New France and the American and Canadian troops trying to “spread democracy” throughout the Middle East. Some similarities include how foreigners from different countries bombarded into other countries and tried to change things. Now, while the Middle East inarguably needed all the help they could get trying to shed dictators and spread democracy, the Americas did act quite like the Jesuits in that they showed up uninvited and tried to change how the countries were working. Also, they both ceased to understand the people who they were trying to change. There are also many differences between the two, as the Americas had good intentions trying to free the impoverished
and oppressed, while the Jesuits were just trying to push their religious views on the First Nations People. Overall, the two missions were very similar and both seemed to be unsuccessful.

People can spot this place for miles and miles because the church sits upon a hill, where people can hear the bells ring every hour, and where people can go to see this majestic site; Sacred Heart Catholic Church stands in the middle of the rural town of Schnellville, Indiana. Sacred Heart, one of many churches located in Dubois County, including the following: St. Celestine, St. Ferdinand, St. Mary’s, and St. Joe’s still stand to this current day. The Vietnamese fought for their people and against a county that was following in the steps of colonialism, not for the name of communism. This common strive for self determination can be seen in the Non-Alignment movement, in which several Asian and African countries refused to join either power bloc and instead bound together to fight for self determination. Following the signatures of African and Asian countries, many Latin American countries joined the movement in the 1970s. Several Latin American countries were up in arms after American coups disregarded Latin American self determination and overthrew democratically elected political leaders. Latin American countries also became increasingly suspicious when international companies, such as the United Fruit Company, began to resemble a colonial regime by exploiting Latin American resources. The Reformation occurred all over Western Europe. It was mostly set in Germany where various parts of corruption in the Church happened. Martin Luther started the process of the Reformation, he was German so he understood how the Catholic Church took advantage and didn't think this was fair. The Catholic Reformation took place between 1450-1650 which was the biggest revolution in Germany, although the understanding of Luther's actions weren't taken notice of until he put the 95 Theses on the Church's door. Though there are vast amounts native chiefs and European explorers who are significant to the contact and colonization of New France, the three I have decided to focus on are: Chief Membertou, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Columbus. This page will explain these three individuals in detail and explain their significance to the contact and colonization of New France.
It is clear that between 1540 & 1559 that the Catholic Church became increasingly intolerant of debasement and dissent. This is mostly due to the leaders that came to the papal throne within this period. Between 1540 & 1559 there was a variety of pope’s with very differing views on how to contend with the issues of Protestantism, debasement and dissent.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, vicars were under direct authority from Rome, and controlled the Roman Catholic Church of England. It was not until the early nineteenth century, under Pope Pius IX, that the Church decided to split England into several smaller districts, each headed by a bishop. London papers began following the growth and leadership change of the Roman Church in England. One article in The Times stated that "Rome had mistaken the High Church renewal, the Oxford Movement, within the Church of England for a Romeward move" (qtd. in Bowen 148). Several bishops tried to explain to The Times and its readers that the new hierarchy was simply a matter of church government and had nothing to do with politics or national life in England. The Roman Catholic Church thought that it would be better for their congregations to have a local bishop they could rely on, rather than having nearly all of the control in Rome.
The Society of Jesus was founded by Ignatius Loyola in 1540, created as a military organization dedicated to missionary work across countries, the members of the association are identified as the Jesuits, they soon became known as being able to interweave the beliefs of Christianity with the customs of the local inhabitants (Bumsted, 2011). Between the years of 1632 to 1670 roughly a hundred Jesuit missionaries were sent to New France in an attempt to learn the Native languages, culture, and assimilate the local populace to European culture and Christianity (Welton, 2005). The integrating of the Jesuit s into the everyday lives of the Native peoples created more issues and hardship for the inhabitants than it did benefits. The Jesuits brought many foreign diseases to a group of people that were not accustomed to European illness like smallpox and measles. The Jesuits were also known as the “black robes”, they were known to bring sickness into most tribes they encountered. The mass epidemic of the disease ultimately leads to the down-fall of the Huron people; it lessened their numbers and made them vulnerable to attacks from the Iroquois. Lastly, the ultimate goal ofthe Jesuits was to assimilate and convert the First Nation peoples to Christianity which led to a massive erosion of culture and heritage within the tribes. The introduction of Catholicism and European values eradicated many traditional customs of the First Nation; such as the religious view of Animism, the role of females within the tribe, introduced a European educational curriculum, and illustrated a new understanding of life and death. The Jesuits were unsuccessful in their attempt to improve the lives of the First Nation inhabitants, for the reason that they brought a number of devastating diseases, aided in the down-fall of Huron people, and eroded traditional heritage
In Montgomery Gentry’s hit song “Where I Come From”, he sings about his small town southern pride. In this country tune, the line “That little white church is gonna have a crowd,” is accompanied by lyrics about a town that could easily be located in East Tennessee. One thing that can be assumed from Gentry’s song is that the, “Little white church” he sings about is probably not a Catholic cathedral. In southern towns, like the one Gentry sings about, Protestant churches drastically outrank Catholic churches. In Kingsport Tennessee, Catholic churches are outnumbered forty two to one by Baptist churches alone. This statistic makes it easy to see why, as a whole, Protestants are uneducated and overly critical about the Catholic faith, the very religion that Protestantism is derived.
The Society of Jesus is a Catholic order that is still doing good work today around the world. During the age of encounters—especially during the colonization of the Americas—the Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits, played an important role in documenting Native Americans, converting them and helping them adapt to their newly changing environment. The practice of first establishing respect, then influence, and eventually working for religious conversion proved effective at converting Native Americans in North America. Their extensive ethnographic documentation as well as everyday letters to one another have proved useful to scholars trying to understand early Native American and French encounters in North America.
In 1961, in response to the success of the Cuba’s Communist Revolution, President John F. Kennedy initiated the Alliance for Progress to discourage Marxist revolutions and to promote economic and social cooperation through democracy between the United States and Latin America . All throughout Latin America during the 1960’s Marxism had become the central philosophy and the future of democracy in the region appeared to be greatly threatened. Chile was viewed by the US as the ideal model for the Alliance for Progress program due its long history of constitutional democracy dating back to the nineteenth century. The Cold War fears of the Communist threat infiltrated the Chilean military when the United States funded a training school called the School of the Americas that specialized in teaching counterinsurgency techniques to Latin American militaries in order to combat guerilla warfare . Throughout these Cold War years the United States’ fear of Communism seemed dominate over rationality causing the US to act against their claimed beliefs in freedom, democracy, and basic human rights. That hypocrisy is most greatly evidenced by the United States foreign policy toward Chile during the 1960’s-the 1990’s.
The Catholic Church during the Middle Ages played an all encompassing role over the lives of the people and the government. As the Dark Ages came to a close the ideas of the Renaissance started to take hold, and the church's power gradually began to wain. The monarchies of Europe also began to grow, replacing the church's power. Monarchies, at the close of the Middle Ages and the dawn of the Renaissance, did not so much seek the guidance of the church as much as it sought their approval. However, the Church during the Age of Discovery was still a major influence. The discovery of the New World and its previously unknown inhabitants presented new problems in the Catholic Church in the late 14th and early 15th century. When Spain's rulers and emissaries decided to physically conquer and populate the New World, and not just trade with it, the transplantation of Christian institutions followed.

However, the American and Latin American Revolution were conservative movements. While they did overthrow the government by force and implement a new system, they were less revolutionary because there was less bloodshed. This can be seen as the American Revolution gained independence from Britain and set up a new system set forth by the Enlightenment ideals and English liberties in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Likewise, the Latin American Revolution created less of a change in the political and social structures of Latin America such as not becoming democratic. Each revolution differed greatly in terms of effects, violence, being a conservative or radical movement, and the revolution being categorized as political, social, or both.
The French Revolution represents a period in history that brought about a major change in not only Europe but the entire world. The French revolution spanned from 1789 to 1799. It brought about several key changes in not only the economic state of France but also the perception of the Christian church, specifically the Catholic church in France. Its impacts both economically and religiously are still felt to this day. The French Revolution may have temporarily destroyed Christianity in France, however, it acted as a savior for the future of Christianity.
Armand-Jean du Plessis de Richelieu was born in 1585, and would become the future chief minister of the French monarchy from 1624 to 1642. When he was born, on his cot was the motto, Regi Armandus, meaning "Armand for the King" . This statement would arguably become one of the truest statements in history, as Richelieu would eventually play a very important part in firmly establishing the power of the French monarchy over its subjects and the power of France as a world power . Richelieu has been seen by different historians in two ways; one being a ruthless despot who would do whatever he possibly could to achieve his goals, and the other being of a brilliant politician who transformed France into one of the greatest and most powerful nations and monarchies in the world. However, some historians, such as Knecht argue that both of these views are interlinked. The Machiavellian principle, "the ends justify the means", applies greatly to Cardinal Richelieu, as he was a very ambitious politician, and would do anything that he saw as possible to strengthen the position of France and the king. Koenigsberger argues that, in relation to the wars of religion, "royal authority was restored largely by the energy of Louis XIII's chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu" .
