Total quality management (TQM) and continuous improvement are one of the few management approaches to aim for improving the effectiveness of an organization (Oakland, 2003). Business Process Reengineering (BPR) by Michael Hammer in Harvard Business Review (Hammer, 1990) is another known approach which is also aimed at improving an organization by starting over to achieve dramatic improvements. Although this two approaches are sharing the similar goals and outcome which is improving an organization or industries but the outcome and their way are differ completely. However we should note that both approaches share the common goal which is turning an organization to success from trouble to compete with the competitors.

Today, their most popular slogan is “Ford Has a Better Idea.” TQM started in Ford through a partnership with ChemFil, a division of PPG Industries, where Ford wanted to produce better quality products, a constant working environment, effective management, and profitability; the slogan was changed to “Quality is Job 1” became “Quality People, Quality Products” by 1990s. It is aim to achieve productivity and process efficiency by identifying and removing problems in work processes and systems. TQM can lead to avoid mistakes in work processes, unnecessary tasks, redundant processes, and duplicate efforts. Besides, predicting mistakes and unproductive activities also can be avoid through TQM. Continuous Improvement fetches many benefits to Ford Motor Company in terms of costs and time. For example in term of cost saving include elimination of waste costs and reject products, decrease warranty and customer support costs, removal of repairs and reworks and thus process efficiency leading to better profit per product or service. TQM is a company’s complete “culture of quality” approach which focuses on long-term success. It strives for continuous improvement, in all aspects of an organization, as a process and not as a short-term goal. TQM’s involves everyone in the organization to transform the organization into a forward-thinking entity by influencing attitudes, practices, structures, and systems of the entire organization (Business Dictionary, 2014). There is a lot of literature on the concept of continuous improvement (CI). Studies show that CI is very important to creating competitive advantages in highly competitive industries such as the automobile industry (Bhuiyan & Baghel 2005; Li et al. 2009; Schaeffer, Cadavid, & Backström 2010). These studies suggest that manufacturing firms use CI to eliminate waste in all organisational systems and processes (Bhuiyan & Baghel 2005; Li et al. 2009). Currently, manufacturing firms use lean manufacturing, six sigma, lean six sigma, and the Kaizen methods of CI methodologies to reduce wastages, simplify the production line, and improve quality (Swink & Jacobs 2012).
Michael Hammer, the management expert who initiated the reengineering movement, defines reengineering as “the fundamental rethinking and redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed. It uses many of the tools just discussed to achieve these goals.
