The question is what public health communication? “Healthy People 2010 defines health communication as “the art and technique of informing, influencing, and motivating individual, institutional, and public audiences about important health issues.”” (Bernhardt, 2004, para 4). As for the Institute of Medicine, they claimed that health communication is what society do collectively to assure the well-being of all (Bernhardt, 2004). Overall, public communication “is the scientific development, strategic dissemination, and critical evaluation of relevant accurate, accessible, and understandable health information communicated to and from an intended audience to advance the health of the public” (Bernhardt, 2004, para 4). With that said, a key element of health communication essential for public health leaders is to be able to communicate in ways to motivate others to take action whether to participates as a leader of the movement of diabetic screening or to be the person motivated to be screened. As public health leaders, the focus is more on health promotion and disease prevention, and to accomplish this goal; the health care professional must be able to motivate the population of interest to take part of the campaign. Bernhardt (2014) stated, “When well-conceived, carefully implemented and sustained over time, public health communication programs have the capacity to elicit change among individuals and populations by raising awareness, increasing knowledge, shaping attitudes, and changing behaviors” (para 7). The leader must be able to motivate and convince his stakeholders before he or she can accomplish the campaign's

This can be done by providing free blood pressure and blood glucose level checks. Another way to create awareness is providing health drives with it community as well as subsidized/ waived fees for the screening of heart diseases and stroke. Public health nurses could help educate and create awareness by having health promotions setup. Community nurses could also provide oriented health services that are available for the community which might include providing essential personal services for those who would otherwise not receive them, and making sure that a competent public health and personal health care workforce is available (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2014

In conclusion, diabetes is a serious disease and can be life threatening. With the right research and implementation of new studies diabetes can be reduced among the populations. We as a people need to realize this epidemic and all get together and beat it. Restaurants need to stop putting chemicals and unnecessary fats in their food. Not only diabetics but everyone should educate themselves on what is going in your body when you eat. Also, exercising and getting off the couch, in children, needs to be addressed and that alone would help reduce diabetes in the younger population. I can’t stress enough on education. If you know what you are eating or how you are exercising you protect yourself from poor health and live a great life. Type 2 diabetes can be dwindled down with a conscious individual and group effort.

The lengthier life expectancy is due to advancements in the science and delivery of healthcare. Health communication has been an essential aspect of the delivery of healthcare.
