Criticisms First criticism that can be applied on the theory of imagery rehearsal therapy is that it is based on the notion that chronic nightmares in PTSD are a learned behavior. This was explained by the classical conditioning theory of learning. This theory is often perceived as too simplistic and deterministic. People are more complicated than animals (Pavlov’s dogs), there are certain typical cognitive schemas that are one of the major characteristics of human beings and some other learning theories take into account the human complex nature; e.g. classical conditioning model can be upgraded by the reinforcement and punishment model. The trauma is therefore the cause of the negative cognitive schema. Furthermore, this model is deterministic, which means that it makes us, humans, unable to influence our learning processes and for example that phobias and other learned behaviors could not be unlearned. But on the other hand, IRT is based on the fact that a learned behavior can be unlearned. It has to be noted that since the CBT is based on cognitive and behavioral paradigm. Once a patient changes their distorted thinking, they are able to think in a more positive and realistic manner. Overall, CBT focuses on consistent problem solving strategies and changing negative thought distortions and negative behavior. There are different types of CBT, which share common elements. This therapy has been thought to be more effective because it better accesses people’s emotions to their traumatic event. EMDR is where the participant was asked to recall the memory and its associated and then lateral sets of eye movements were induced by the therapist moving her finger across the participant's field of vision (Taylor et al., 2003).
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a counselling model based greatly on talking therapy. It focuses on peoples underlying thoughts and past experiences, and how they influence current habits and behaviours. CBT tries to correct these and learn alternative ways of processing information to alter the undesired behaviour and/or habits. This is done through a combination of cognitive therapy (looking at the ways and things you think) and behavioural therapy (looking at the things you do).

The biological approach is useful in regards to treatment. This approach has led to many forms of treatments. The cognitive approach is also useful and has made important contributions to the field of psychology, particularly that for the treatment of depression. The cognitive approach has been applied successfully in therapy. One of the core expectations of the cognitive approach is that mental processes influence our behavior. A further similarity between the two approaches is that both are seen as deterministic approaches. Cognitive is defined as a mental process; it refers to everything going on in your mind including your thought processes and the way you are thinking and feeling. Behaviour refers to everything that you may do; this includes any action that you may present or act out, this can also be an indirect action that is caused by other underlying behaviours. Therapy is a systematic approach to try and resolve a problem, illness, actions, irregular thought patterns or anything that may be a disturbance that distracts you from your everyday functioning. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a dynamic mode of holistic intervention that seeks to change thought processes that are linked with emotions through a goal-orientated process (Freeman and Ronen, 2007). Individuals have a three-step thought process; inferences, evaluations and core beliefs.
