Your English teacher has a decision to make. How should she decide what books the students will read next year in class? She could choose to assign all readings without any input from the students. On the other hand, she could ask you (the students) to choose which books you will read. Classes must meet all expected standards regardless of reading selection. You have an opportunity to influence the decision. Teachers should be able to choose and assign the books that students will read next year. Teachers most likely have more of an understanding on which books to choose where students may not know what is necessary for their best learning experience. Teachers may know which books are good to read for educational purposes. The books teachers …show more content…
Many teachers are experienced enough to know several different types of books that would be healthy for students to read. Teachers that have a literary background can easily decipher the best genres for students to read that could catch their attention while teaching. Students will also be exposed to a larger variety of books when teachers make the decision. This can lead to students having more of an experience because of the different types of books teachers have exposed to them.
Even if students would most likely choose books engaging to them, teachers know educational books. Educational books that are good for students have most likely already been read by teachers. When teachers choose the books, they know which books will educate the students in a way that is good for them to learn skills that are important to English. The students will learn things for the future that involves language skills. When teachers choose educational books that apply to English, they know how the information will challenge students and help prepare them for high school, or even
When Victorian Era, England is brought up in most context’s it is used to exemplify a calm and more refined way of life; however, one may overlook how the children of this era were treated and how social class systems affected them. Samuel Butler’s The Way of All Flesh is a novel written to take a closer look at the life of children growing up in the unfair social hierarchy of Victorian Era England. Butler’s main characters are Theobald and Ernest, who grow up during the time period; Overton, who is Ernest’s godfather, is the narrator of the novel and provides insight into Theobald and Ernest as they mature through the novel. Theobald is the son of a wealthy, strict, and abusive father who treats him with no mercy, but leaves him with a rather significant inheritance from his Christian publishing company, at his death. Ernest is the son of Theobald, who beats him with a stern fits over even the pettiest things in
My reading experience in junior-high and first three years of high school were not so much different. I had never been enthusiastic to read about predetermined topics assigned by my teacher and they continued to assign predetermined reading topics that made me feel frustrated and at times uncomfortable. But there was positivity that came out of these repulsive and devastating books, such as Lord of The Flies by William Golding or The Night by Elie Wiesel. Lord of the Flies caused me to confirm that humans must have rules and a government to help
Richard Wright, in his essay “Discovering Books,” explains how reading books changed his outlook on life and eventually his life itself. The first book that widened his horizons was an overtly controversial book by H. L. Mencken. I have a story not so dissimilar from his.
Summer readings from freshmen, sophomore, and junior year, and also the books we had to read during those years. Romeo and Juliet was a major book we read my freshmen year as well as Thirteen Reasons Why, and we read a few good books my sophomore year. We read The Great Gatsby, The Fault in our Stars, and Fahrenheit 451. There were reasons why we read those books, we did not just read them for fun. There is a little bit of a history lesson behind this too, and that is how literature was different in 1984 (pun intended) than it is now. Reading these books also helped with my interest in books by giving me different genera ideas that I might enjoy, but it also played a negative role because some of the parts of reading these books were boring to do. I think that both The Great Gatsby and The Fault in our Stars were good books for me and put a positive effect on my reading habits. I also liked reading these books because we usually watched a movie to go with the book, so I would read the book and try to picture everything in my mind as best as I could and then see how close my imagination can get to the movie. For example, in The Great Gatsby I tried to imagine the green light that Gatsby stares at and Gatsby’s ginormous house, or what the “Eyes of T.J. Eckleburg” look like staring down at the valley of ashes. Another example in The Fault in our Stars when Hazel and
Different types of genre books are associated with different amounts and types of language and each will encourage a different dialog or conversation with children. I can mention a few examples; picture storybooks (Brown bear, Brown Bear what do you see by Eric Carle), participation books (Spot Goes to the Park by Eric Hill), predictable books (The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle), folktales and fables (Goldilocks and the three bears by James Marshall) and poetry and nursery rhymes for children. However, the type of books read to children contributes to the depth of their learning. It is important to try to include
Literature is a key component when speaking of literacy. Teachers need to provide students with endless amounts of practice experiences in reading to build their fluency rate. This should be done with different genres of texts and different levels. Reading a wide variety of literature help children develop rich vocabularies.
...d dive into our imaginations allowing us to have a pleasant break from our everyday routine. Literature is often our sanity in a busy, hectic life. How about a good thriller or mystery? These works are exciting because we find ourselves playing detective and involved in situations we normally wouldn’t be immersed in. A good romance novel will keep that helpless romantic hopeful and full of joy believing in a life of love and happiness. It is important to expose children to literature. Their minds are vessels filling with information and expanding with knowledge every day. It’s important they read about history to learn where they came from. No matter how young our old we can all benefit from literature and even become kinder, smarter and happier beings.
As provocative as the book may be, giving students a choice in their reading material increases their interest in
Books help us to understand ourselves, to find out who we are.” (National Children’s Book and Literature Association). Literature has been important to human development since the first script was ever written. Whether it is Shakespeare, or The Cat in the Hat, young brains have continued to flourish with the help of books. Books give you a way to escape your reality, live through the twists and turns of your imagined fantasy world, and help you find a sense of your true self within the story.
Throughout society, many people fight over whether or not books should be banned. Books have been debated in different school districts for a very long time due to the topics involved in some of the books written. Some people believe that many books are classics and should be kept since they are a part of our history. They believe books can help guide people on how to act and teach a student many things. On the other hand, other people believe that books should be banned due to the many topics that aren’t suitable for children and students to learn about.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Students feel parents or teachers or even the government should not take away books they really want to read because of how they feel. Students should be allowed to choose what books they want to read. The books that are banned can give you are real learning experience, teaching you new language and how things were before our time. For example,In Fahrenheit 451, books were being burned and the firemen were not allowing people to read, which is similar to banning books. Life in that book was very uneventful and dull, all because the people did not get to enjoy reading.
Are you tired of kids complaining how their backpacks are too heavy? Think about it this way. The students in high school should be able to have netbooks instead of textbooks in their locker. Textbooks are too heavy, netbooks are faster and easier to use, and also much smaller than textbooks. Netbooks are lighter than textbooks.
Talking about students’ interest toward English, from the study it can be concluded that almost all of the students like English. They like to watch English movies, listen and sing English songs, and read English books for improving their vocabularies. Their liking toward English made them always waiting for English class and feeling happy and never feel bored in English subject teaching-learning
Literature has an enormous impact on a child’s development during the early years of his or her life. It is important for parents and teachers to instill a love of reading in children while they are still young and impressionable. They are very naive and trusting because they are just beginning to develop their own thoughts, so they will believe anything they read (Lesnik, 1998). This is why it is so important to give them literature that will have a positive impact. Literature can make children more loving, intelligent and open minded because reading books gives them a much wider perspective on the world. Through reading, children’s behavior can be changed, modified or extended, which is why books are so influential in children’s lives while they are young (Hunt, 1998). Literature has the power to affect many aspects of a child’s life and shapes their future adult life.
