That Night It was a warm summer night in Wytheville, Virginia, with the exception of a cool breeze blowing in from the west. Abandoned plastic plates, with half eaten cake, still remained on the front porch from the birthday celebration that afternoon. The festivities lasted all day as family gathered, cupcakes were iced, and the living room was lined with presents for my sister’s 20th birthday party. Exhausted from stuffing my face with cake and laughing with my cousins, I made my way to bed. I soon fell asleep not knowing what the night had in store for me, but trust me, I will never forget it.

The Jews were only provided with a blanket that soon became soaked by the snowfall. They spent days in the bitter cold temperatures and all they ate was snow. Millions of Jews, gypsies, disabled, and Slavic people brutally died because of the Holocaust. Between Shades of Gray and Night both are daunting stories about people who had to go through the struggles of prejudice. These two novels have characters that are related in some aspects and distinct in others. The characters I find the most alike are Lina and Elie, Ona and Mrs. Schächter, and Elena and Shlomo. Lina and Elie are alike by loving and defending their families. Likewise, Ona and Mrs. Schächter are alike by how they react to the harsh events. Finally, Elena and Shlomo are alike by being strong in a time of crisis. These character’s traits are slightly different, but mostly alike.
Imagine being trapped in a ghetto, seeing communities leaving in trains, families being split up, never to see each other again.. The emotions that each and every Holocaust survivor must’ve gone through is overwhelming. Some things that are taken for granted, will never be seen again. While reading the two texts, Night by Elie Wiesel and “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” by Pavel Friedman, The two predominant emotions that prevailed most to Holocaust victims and survivors were hope and fear.
In his essay “Existentialism”, Jean Paul Sartre discusses the main beliefs of existentialism. Perhaps the most important belief of existentialism is that there is no human nature, and there is no God. This means that each individual man has control of his own destiny. The definition of each individual man is the sum of his life and all he has accomplished in his life. He is also responsible for all the choices and actions he makes in his life. These types of choices and actions can be seen in the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel. This book is a story about a boy, Wiesel, who is taken to a concentration camp with his family. It follows him and his father through their trials and movement from Auschwitz to Burkenau, and to Buna and how they continue to narrowly escape death. By the end of the story, readers see how Wiesel has become indifferent to the horrors of the camps. From the beginning to this point in the book, Wiesel and other characters make decisions that Sartre would call existentialist.
Feeling lost when one doesn’t even know them self or when one doesn’t know what to stand for or believe in anymore is exactly how Elie Wiesel felt in his book “Night”. During the time of the Holocaust, Elie was one of the victims taken into a concentration camp and forced to work to brutal extents. As a kid, Elie was determined to learn and study his religion, but that changed, along with his priorities. Devastating events changed Elie’s idea on religion, battling conflicts between himself and those around him, even the test that God seemed to implicate on Elie. To his own disbelief, Elie had given up on God and had lost his faith due to his immense struggle throughout the year he spent in the camp, carrying the burden that he does not care about the one he had always looked up too and been there for him, which is God.

This book is by a Jewish man name Elie Wiesel; he talks about the atrocities he witnessed as a boy committed by the Nazis during World War Two. The things that are mentioned in this book are the infamous Holocaust that claimed the lives of millions of Jews and other ethnic groups. He also finds himself deported to the infamous Auschwitz concentration/extermination camp. During his time at Auschwitz he encountered some infamous people such as Doctor Josef Mengele aka “The Angel of Death” known by his patients. He earned that nickname by performing deadly human experiments on the condemned Jews and other ethnic groups. The worst part is these horrifying events occurred when he was just twelve. The experiences he endured cause him to question his religion and slowly he loses faith in god.
In the two Robert Frost poems, "Mowing" and "Acquainted with the Night," he uses insightful figurative language and diction to describe the pleasurable feeling of labor through hard work; he compares it to the isolation of being all alone from the rest of the world. In the poem, "Mowing," Frost uses alliteration and descriptive imagery to form the main message that the reality of hard work is rewarding enough. Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania (later known as Romania) on September 30, 1928. Elie focused on Jewish religious studies before being relocated to Nazi death camps in WWII. Wiesel survived; he eventually began to write about his experiences in his memoir Night. He became an activist, orator and teacher. He spoke out against persecution and injustice. People should look at what Elie Wiesel and many other Jews went through just to be able to live in this world. The people living now should be appreciative of everything that is given and more.
The crisp, cool, and cinnamon air filled the morning of Thanksgiving in 1987. Although I was only two years and eleven months old, I remember the scratchy, fuzzy, purple- footed pajamas that I was wearing that morning. After I woke up, I "helped" my mom make her famous orange- cranberry relish, got dressed in my cream sweater dotted with cherries and my navy pleated skirt, topped off with my favorite cream fuzz- warn tights, and before I knew it we were out the door to my grandmother's house. After an early dinner with my grandparents, mom, and dad, my grandfather and dad left to catch the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game, leaving the rest of us to find entertainment of our own.
In 1986, Elie Wiesel won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was a voice for the sufferings of both the Jewish people, and victims of any oppression. His Holocaust experiences sparked something inside of him that wouldn’t have surfaced otherwise. Despite all of the brutality and suffering, Elie learned positive lessons throughout his time in Auschwitz and the Holocaust.
Every day, people are denied basic necessary human rights. One well known event that striped millions of these rights was the Holocaust, recounted in Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night. As a result of the atrocities that occur all around the world, organizations have published declarations such as the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights. It is vital that the entitlement to all rights and freedoms without distinction of any kind, freedom of thought and religion, and the right to a standard of living adequate for health and well-being of themselves be guaranteed to everyone, as these three rights are crucial to the survival of all people and their identity.
In Night, by Elie Wiesel, a rather prevalent theme of the novel is the idea of silence in place of justice. This is exhibited numerous times throughout the book, usually following a tragic incident where, in a modern society would be answered by punishment of the wrongdoer, but is instead answered by nothing.

In the poem “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost, the Romantic poet explores the idea of humanity through nature. This sonnet holds a conversational tone with a depressing mood as the man walks in the dark city trying to gain knowledge about his “inner self”. The narrator takes a stroll at night to embrace the natural world but ignores the society around him. His walk allows him to explore his relationship with nature and civilization. In “Acquainted with the Night”, the narrator emphasizes his isolation from the society by stating his connectivity with the natural world.
