That Night It was a warm summer night in Wytheville, Virginia, with the exception of a cool breeze blowing in from the west. Abandoned plastic plates, with half eaten cake, still remained on the front porch from the birthday celebration that afternoon. The festivities lasted all day as family gathered, cupcakes were iced, and the living room was lined with presents for my sister’s 20th birthday party. Exhausted from stuffing my face with cake and laughing with my cousins, I made my way to bed. I soon fell asleep not knowing what the night had in store for me, but trust me, I will never forget it.
