Personal Narrative- Eventful Thanksgiving
The crisp, cool, and cinnamon air filled the morning of Thanksgiving in 1987. Although I was only two years and eleven months old, I remember the scratchy, fuzzy, purple- footed pajamas that I was wearing that morning. After I woke up, I "helped" my mom make her famous orange- cranberry relish, got dressed in my cream sweater dotted with cherries and my navy pleated skirt, topped off with my favorite cream fuzz- warn tights, and before I knew it we were out the door to my grandmother's house. After an early dinner with my grandparents, mom, and dad, my grandfather and dad left to catch the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game, leaving the rest of us to find entertainment of our own.
Upon their departure, my mom began gathering dis...
Although Barbie was created as a toy for girls, the sexual nature of the doll suggests it was created for the pleasure of men and envy of women. Prager compares the figure of Barbie to the kind of women who would be seen in the Playboy mansion or be a frequent guest on explicit television shows. This is the image of a mans...
In the James family Thanksgiving is far from perfect but this year I wanted to change that. Know more playing Minecraft on the Xbox. It's just going to be chatting at the dinner table and eating till we pass out, while watching football. I was determined this will be the perfect Thanksgiving. But know I had to pick out my outfit for tomorrow.
Personal narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience. Although a great deal of writing has a thesis, stories are different. A good story creates a dramatic effect, makes us laugh, gives us pleasurable fright, and/or gets us on the edge of our seats. A story has done its job if we can say, "Yes, that captures what living with my father feels like," or "Yes, that’s what being cut from the football team felt like."
I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. As I laid my furry mittens and warm hat on the bench to dry, I was immediately greeted with the rich scent of sweet apple pie, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and the twenty-pound turkey my mother was preparing for our Thanksgiving feast.
Paper plates, plastic forks and a pot of spaghetti is not how I imagined my Thanksgiving holiday. It was not a house packed with chattering family members or a buffet filled with five different kinds of the same green bean casserole. Instead, my dad, mom and brother sat with me elbow to elbow at a round fold-out table in the center of our vacant house. I blankly stared at each member of my family and guided my fork back and forth across my plate, trying the hide my discontent, and wishing we were truly home. In that instance I could not list but two things I had to be thankful for.
What fun things do you do for Thanksgiving? Do you have any exciting activities that your family does? Thanksgiving is all about getting together with your family and saying what you are thankful for. Thanksgiving gives people the chance to get to know your family better. I think Thanksgiving is not only for people that believe in God, but for people that like to get together with families in general.
It may seem trivial and go unnoticed to most, but by assigning Barbie a real career, people are able to identify with and recognize her. The marketers also provide Barbie with a life other than modeling, such as friends and a home. The Ken doll, which is commonly known as Barbie’s boyfriend, makes her appear more real to the audience. Girls are able to identify with the idea of a boyfriend, which makes the notion of Barbie seem more realistic and desirable. The same idea is applied to the many friends Barbie has been accompanied by over the years. Lastly, and perhaps most famously, Barbie, like almost all of the girls who play with her, have a home. The Barbie Dream House is just another clever way her marketing team has presented her to society as a real person. Humanizing Barbie, and portraying her in such a manner makes her more attractive to potential buyers. The girls who engage in play with dolls do not want merely a doll; they desire something they can relate to and envision in the real world. Imaginative play is a large portion of childhood, and the ability for children to posses a doll like Barbie , who represents a real person in society, is extremely valuable. The use of social constructionism in the marketing of products such as Barbie is both brilliant and effective.
The narrative accompanying the doll is just as important as her appearance and sets the intention of how the girl will engage in performative play. Dollmakers have the power to send girls positive messages about how a girl will take place in the world with her doll. Will the girl mimic a surgeon if she plays with Doctor Barbie? Will her dream of Olympic aspirations when she plays with swim champion? What kind of role model shall we fashion this doll? Unfortunately it’s been a slow climb to to get Barbie to . Her first careers were a secretary, teacher, and flight attendant. As Feminist put themselves into the debate, Mattel added professions over the years, catapulting Barbie to enter new fields, as a doctor, a judge, a lawyer and even The President of the United States. In contrast, Bratz dolls are underemployed. They are teen girls who love fashion, shopping, sharing and creating their dreams with their friends. In terms of role models, the production of famous figures in the market leans toward movie starlets, models and pop singers. Women who have careers based on their looks before their talent are more likely to be fashioned into a doll. Doll versions of Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Lopez and actresses linked to a blockbuster movie are often easy to find in a store. There are exceptions; recently Mattel released doll versions of more women known for their groundbreaking accomplishments including ballerina Misty Copeland and film director Ava
The doll continues to sell more successfully every year because like Motz stated, “when a girl plays with a baby doll, she becomes in her fantasy the doll’s mother. She talks directly to the doll…and becomes Barbie, manipulating Barbie, speaking for her and moving other dolls around engaging in role-playing activities. She can imitate adult speech, dress, and behavior…(Motz 1).” When a little girl plays with Barbie, she becomes engrossed and mesmerized into the actions, acting as if the little girl was the one acting everything out like in real life and assuming all of the success, despite the fact that Barbie does corrupt the girl’s vision of real life by living in a world of success, fame, and fortune. The little girl would feel a surge of happiness manipulating the Barbie’s to her likings. Moreover, like any other products, playing with Barbie’s also develops camaraderie with other Barbie loving girls. Within women’s lives, it would establish “identity among women in the micro level (Kirk and Rey 2-3).” Girls are typically exposed to other people through places in society such as school. Upon meeting friends, her friends could have an addiction to Barbie and influence the girl to wanting Barbie as well. Because of this, the girl would stop at nothing to eventually wield and manipulate Barbie’s. This is also due to “our sense of comfort and solace and others with whom they feel they belong with whom they share common value and interests (Kirk and Rey
Thanksgiving is a holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday during the month of November in the United States. Thanksgiving honors a legal holiday for people to be thankful for what they have, such as family and friends. Thanksgiving is meant to be spent with your family and not out shopping trying to find deals on items. In fact, in the article “Two Dozen Retailers Won’t Open on Thanksgiving-And They’re Shaming the Ones That Will,” it states, “Read between the lines and you’ll see that any retailer forcing employees to work on Thanksgiving must be an ‘unfriendly’ company.” Thanksgiving is about giving...not taking. Big name stores such as Walmart, Macy’s, and Target are staying open on Thanksgiving to make some extra money. Thanksgiving
She’s tall, slim, and beautiful. She has a smile that never ceases, a body that never ages, and a wardrobe that every woman dreams of. With these great qualities under her belt Barbie has become the most popular selling woman in the world. From ”Sponge-N-Print,” “Make-up” and “Doctor” Barbie to one hundred-piece gift sets and fashion play cards to “Birthday Fun at McDonald’s” and Barbie’s “Baywatch” Rescue Boat, it could be concluded that this is no ordinary toy. She is a timeless creation who does more than smile and look pretty.
Looking back on a childhood filled with events and memories, I find it rather difficult to pick on that leaves me with the fabled “warm and fuzzy feelings.” As the daughter of an Air Force Major, I had the pleasure of traveling across America in many moving trips. I have visited the monstrous trees of the Sequoia National Forest, stood on the edge of the Grande Canyon and have jumped on the beds at Caesar’s Palace in Lake Tahoe. However, I have discovered that when reflecting on my childhood, it is not the trips that come to mind, instead there are details from everyday doings; a deck of cards, a silver bank or an ice cream flavor.
“Don’t forget to be home in time for the bonfire tonight!” , my mom shouted, as I ran out the door. When we got to the game, we met up with his parents and his cousin Bree. The boys won their game, still leading an undefeated season. His family and I went to Dairy Queen to eat lunch.
Finally, we arrived at our destination. I left the car leaving my parents and little brother behind and ran up the steps to my grandma’s house. I just had to be the first one to knock on her door, so I did. She opened the door for me, and I went inside parting with the bitter cold and darkness surrounding me. Inside the house I was immediately encircled with the aromas of her Christmas cooking and baking. A real fresh Christmas tree which was already beautifully adorned with old family ornaments perforated the air with more holiday aromas. I went into the kitchen with my mom, and together we helped my grandma finish preparing the Christmas Eve dinner.
“Why don’t you use your locker? You’re going to have back problems before you even graduate”. These are words that are repeated to me daily, almost like clockwork. I carry my twenty-pound backpack, full of papers upon papers from my AP classes. The middle pouch of my backpack houses my book in which I get lost to distract me from my unrelenting stress. The top pouch holds several erasers, foreshadowing the mistakes I will make - and extra lead, to combat and mend these mistakes. Thick, wordy textbooks full of knowledge that has yet to become engraved in my brain, dig the straps of my backpack into my shoulders. This feeling, ironically enough, gives me relief - my potential and future success reside in my folders and on the pages of my notebooks.
