I lie awake at three in the morning the day after school let out wondering what it will be like. We hadn’t gone on any major trips in a while so finally getting to go somewhere was a nice change in scene. My mind was racing a 100 miles per second. What will my distant relatives think of me? I wonder what everyone is like. We had been planning this “vacation” for exactly four months, and now the day is finally here. In a couple of hours I, with my family, will be on a plane to Chicago. Chicago is not the final destination. There was going to be a layover in Chicago, then to Dubai and then to Islamabad, Pakistan. I scanned the newspaper but nothing caught my attention. As I pretended to be deeply interested into this painfully boring stack of papers, he told me that he was actually on his way to a pilot exam he had to give later that day. He went on and on about pilot school, the feeling of flying an airplane for the first time, and how he can finally do what he loves. The whole weather and delayed flight debacle had thrown us behind schedule by four hours. So we squeezed our way around the other passengers and quickly made it through the hall. As we walked out into the airport I caught a glimpse of another Pakistani family hurriedly pacing to the front, too. We cross half the airport and arrive at the international terminals…But it had been too late. They had closed the gates five minutes early. My mom tried to reason with them and pleaded that we can’t afford to miss this flight and the other Pakistani family soon enough caught up with us and tried to ask them to let us go. We explained that it wasn’t our fault and the weather conditions had messed up our schedule but they stopped listening. They simply told us to walk away or else they would call security. Harsh.
