My family of origin consists of my mom, my dad, a younger brother and myself. Salsa is a great representation of my family. We are all strong independently just as the tomatoes, onions, garlic, and jalapeno peppers are, but when mixed we bring out the best each has to offer. We enhance and complement each other, no one is there to cover up or trample over the other. The first and most important ingredients in salsa are the tomatoes. This is how I depict my mom in our family. She is the backbone of our family. She was a working mother but she never missed a piano recital, soccer game, or family home evening. This isn’t as propionate as the tomato but still makes for an amazing salsa and without it the salsa just doesn’t taste right. This represents my dad. As cliché as it sounds, he is a man of many layers, not one to wear his emotions on his sleeve. He was never the warm and fuzzy type. I can count the number of times my father has cried on one hand. I love how harmonious all the ingredients are atop my tortilla chip. I’d love to say that my childhood home was like that all the time but it wasn’t. There was bickering and fighting. There were times when my dad and I just couldn’t mesh and we brought out the worse in each other. We always love each other and strive to make each other the better sometimes we just couldn’t. If the tomatoes are rotten or we add cinnamon instead of cayenne pepper the salsa would taste terrible. The same goes in my family. I newly found out that every “One ounce of chile contains as much as 20,000 units of Vitamin A, which is twice the minimum daily requirement” (19). Which is surprising for me because ever since I was a child, my thoughts about chiles is that it only gives spiciness to a food. I didn’t know that a chile has something more to give. I also discovered about the jalapeño that “One hundred grams of Texas green chile contains 235 mg. of vitamin C while a California orange has but 49 mg” (19). Its an astounding and shocking because of the revealing information that jalapeños gives more vitamins than the oranges. Now, I know that not only oranges are good supplier of vitamins, but jalapeños also are a good source of vitamin C and also vitamin A which essential part of our body. In addition to that, Burciaga mentioned that “Calcium content in chiles is also high”(19) which gives me an additional information that chiles are also rich in minerals that is very important for our bone
In the world of party chips and zesty dips, the Sensational Salsa company has created a new brand of salsa flavor. Having believe that they have created a culinary masterpiece, the company has already produced a mountains worth of their new salsa flavor. However, when they begin selling the salsa, they were shocked when the statistic showed that many children and adults did not enjoy the taste of their new flavor. Devastated by the news, the Sensational Salsa company deployed a questionable tactic to persuade more people into buying their salsa and change their attitude towards their product: they plan to pay off parents to lie on Facebook about how much they enjoyed the salsa. By employing this method of persuasive communication, the Sensational Salsa company will try to change the attitude the public has of their product both cognitively and affectively.
When most people hear the word “Mexican”, a person instantly thinks of food. This is because Mexicans have been known through out America as a culture to have a variety of some of the best dishes. Hispanics males take pride in working, just as the females take pride in cooking. The women don’t do it just for the heck of it, they make a form of art and also competition. Every Mexican family has a person who competes with another, to see who can make the best dish. Mexicans have different dishes from soups to rice. The one soup you will here in the Mexican generation is pozole. This is a soup that consists of pork, hominy, and spicy herbs. This recipe has been in my family for a more then a decade, and now I share it with you. In order to cook this soup and make as good as Mexicans do, you must possess a certain passion for cooking. Cumbia serves as a unifier of Mexican people, especially families, and serves as a sociocultural outlet for celebration and upholds cultural traditions. A main theme of Mexican culture is togetherness of the family, and many celebrations create a community and place for family involvement. Celebrating together creates and maintains bonds and is an outlet for expression sharing commonalities such as cultural thoughts and ideas. Solidifying a connection in the community with people that listen to cumbia strengthens the culture and forms unity. Mexican cumbia is a significant aspect of Mexican identity and produces a gateway environment for embracing heritage and reflects a highly family and community oriented culture.
I not only had the influences of the Mexican culture, I was able to experience the good old fashioned American family values as well. My mother was the heart of the family. She was the one who cooked, cleaned and cared for her children full time. My father was generally the one in charge and took care of many of the decision making scenarios.

Traditional Cuban cooking is primarily peasant cuisine that has little concern with measurements, order and timing. Most of the food is sauteed or slow-cooked over a low flame. Very little is deep-fried and there are no heavy or creamy sauces. Most Cuban cooking relies on a few basic spices, such as garlic, cumin, oregano, and bay laurel leaves. Many dishes use a sofrito as their basis. The sofrito consists of onion, green pepper, garlic, oregano, and ground pepper quick-fried in olive oil. The sofrito is what gives the food its flavor. It is used when cooking black beans, stews, many meat dishes, and tomato-based sauces. Meats and poultry are usually marinated in citrus juices, such as lime or sour orange juices, and then roasted over low heat until the meat is tender and literally falling off the bone. Another common staple to the Cuban diet are root vegetables such as yuca, malanga, and boniato, which are found in most Latin markets. These vegetables are flavored with a marinade, called mojo, which includes hot olive oil, lemon juice, sliced raw onions, garlic, cumin, and little water.
The increase and changing demography in the United State today, with the disparities in the health status of people from different cultural backgrounds has been a challenge for health care professionals to consider cultural diversity as a priority. It is impossible for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn and understand theses diversity in culture, but using other approaches like an interpreter is very helpful for both nurses and patients. In this paper of a culturally appropriate care planning, I will be discussing on the Hispanic American culture because, I had come across a lot of them in my career as a nurse. The Hispanic are very diverse in terms of communication and communities and include countries like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and Central America, and some of them speak and write English very well, some speaks but can’t write while some can’t communicate in English at all but Spanish.
Firstly, one aspect that is both Mexican and American is the cuisine. The original food for Mexico is very spicy and most of the time very colorful as well. Mexicans use spices, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese in many of the native dishes. They use an assortment of meat: pork, beef, lamb, and chicken. When Mexican restaurants spring up in the United States the food is toned down to appeal to Americans. The Mexican Americans use less spices to make the dishes milder rather than the hot, spicy native food. The food, still Mexican, takes on the likeness of American food. This is shown in the United States by all of the Mexican American restaurants such as Taco Bell. Therefore Mexicans have Americanized their food. “For Hispanics live on this side of the border, where Kraft manufactures Mexican-style Velveeta, and where Jack in the Box serves Fajita Pita.” (Rodriguez 131). Americans complement the Mexican style and the inverse.
The rich warm smells of Mexican spices permeate our house during every season. Family and our Mexican culture is an issue that is important to my family and me. I was born and raised in the United States; however I am still deeply rooted in my Mexican culture.
Through the interview process I was able to identify that a large amount of Mexican culture is based on relationships. These may be relationships with friends, relationships with family, or relationships with a church congregation as a spiritual family as well as a heavenly father. These relationships are what can make a network of people all who hold similar beliefs and customs leading to what makes up a culture.
This is often attributed to their Spanish colonialists. However, about 5% of the population can speak in other languages including Nahuatl and Mayan. Most of the citizens have adopted the Spanish culture. The dominant religion is Christianity even though other faiths exist (Miller, 2015). Mexico has a sophisticated and extensive culinary culture, with a myriad of regional cuisine. The main components of Mexican meals are beans, chilies, and corn. Corn is eaten in a multitude of forms. Mexicans value the family, and the father is the head of the household (Lira, Robson & Klooster, 2016). The country also has a long cultural history, and many old archeological sites are fund all throughout the country. A large number of Mexicans live in cities. Geography plays an important role in a countries beliefs, values and activities. “Traditional Spanish cooking has popular roots. It is the people's cuisine. Most of it is down-to-earth, uncomplicated food, based on the ingredients available locally or the crops grown regionally. Mountains run through Spain in several directions, acting as natural barriers to communication and making transportation difficult until the last half of the 20th century. This is just one of the reasons why cooking differs so much from region to region” (Food).
There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.
