The warriors sacrificed themselves for their cause. Abraham Lincoln acclaims the endeavors of these martyrs. He says they fought and died on the battlefield to keep their beliefs alive. They may have died but their country “conceived in liberty” and dedicated to the equality of all men, lives on. As a result, Abraham Lincoln words his address in such way that the virtue of the nation itself defines martyrs.
He says “any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure”. The men`s deaths resulted from a “test” to see if such a nation can survive. Describing the war is such an unorthodox style downplays the gory image of the wars. It does, however, make the listeners picture the warriors not as barbarians who ruthlessly slaughtered one
“The war correspondent is responsible for most of the ideas of battle which the public possesses … I can’t write that it occurred if I know that it did not, even if by painting it that way I can rouse the blood and make the pulse beat faster – and undoubtedly these men here deserve that people’s pulses shall beat for them. But War Correspondents have so habitually exaggerated the heroism of battles that people don’t realise that real actions are heroic.”
There is a major change in the men in this novel. At first, they are excited to join the army in order to help their country. After they see the truth about war, they learn very important assets of life such as death, destruction, and suffering. These emotions are learned in places like training camp, battles, and hospitals. All the men, dead or alive, obtained knowledge on how to deal with death, which is very important to one’s life.
The sacrifice of the lives of so many soldiers gave Lincoln a new perspective on life, liberty, and freedom and now Lincoln is no longer defending slavery. Before the Civil War, the “Union” tried to ignore slavery and the fact that blacks were actually included in the Declaration of Independence. This was now recognized by Lincoln and the rest of the nation as the essence of a democratic government. The sacrifices of the Union soldiers ensured a government geared by the people and for the people.

Jünger took pride in things that were appropriate for his time – the death of an enemy meant the potential survival of his Company and fighting alongside his brothers gave him a sense of fearlessness and purpose toward death. Jünger’s message seems to relate that it is sometimes necessary to fight in the name of family and to protect one’s nation. Jünger witnessed the brutality of the war and it shook him to a point of devastation (particularly after the Battle of Somme and toward the end), but he refused to allow it to overcome him and rejoiced in the short and simple moments of beauty in life.
Kenneth Slessor does not interpret war as nothing but action filled gore and heinous killing as other poets of his era do. In the 1944 poem Beach Burial, we see death as being emotional and timeless as well as a unifying factor between otherwise unrelated people. Through the use of language choices such as “unknown seamen” and “whether as enemies they fought”, it becomes clear that Slessor refers not to one particular nation but to all soldiers, united by one common enemy; death. He writes as if there is a solidarity in death. War is the result of a disagreement. To say that two nations –or more in many cases – are united during its course is a big claim. However, in saying this, Slessor obviously feels that death is powerful...
The way In which Lincoln referred to these soldiers is a clear indication of his support. This is seen in his use of formal diction- "devotion” and "hallow”, which associate them with the work of the soldiers. These words hold connotations of honor, making it known to the audience that their dedication is deserving of respect. His appeal can also be found in his reference to the Declaration Of Independence, “all men are created equal.” Being that the Declaration of Independence is mainly about freedom and equality, it is a reminder of what the soldiers were fighting for. This move is used to inspire the audience, create a sense of motivation. These aspects of his speech are effective on his connection to the nation's people, who are freshly exposed to the extent of this tragedy. Spiller, begins with a quote by Walt Whitman, “The real war will never get in the books.” The author writes about an interview with Paul Fussell, who was a soldier in World War Two and has written many books about World War One and World War Two. Fussell is very opinionated and critical about other books written about these wars, asserting they are not realistic or portray the true essence of what really occurred by soldiers and other people participating in the wars. I claim that it is impossible to convey the actual personal feelings and emotions of those involved in a war in books or any other forms of media.
Whenever one reads or hears about World War I or World War II, you hear of the struggles and triumphs of the British, Americans or any of the other Allies. And they always speak of the evil and menacing German army. However, All Quiet on the Western Front gives the reader some insight and a look at a group of young German friends who are fighting in World War I. “This story is neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. For he was man too, he too had a wife and children at home, he too was pulled out of his home to fight for a cause he didn't understand.

In his speech, Lincoln immediately makes an appeal to people’s patriotism. “ Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. This preliminary line reminds the audience of their country and their duty to their countrymen. It intuitively eases folks into the idea that their country was a nation founded by liberty, a popular notion, and serves to fill those listening with national pride. Lincoln goes on to address the soldiers who gave their lives towards preserving the country that they love so. “We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.” He uses this rhetoric as a way of reminding the American people of these honorable fallen and why they should pay particular respect towards the soldiers. Lincoln also shows a more humble side to his speech. “But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. In ‘Anthem of Doomed Youth’ Owen shows another version of the suffering- the mourning of the dead soldiers. When Owen asks “What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?”, his rhetorical question compares the soldiers to cattle as they die and suffer undignified. Owen uses this extended metaphor to confront us with the truth, that there are too many fatalities in war. As such, the soldier’s deaths are compared to livestock, to emphasise their poor treatment and question our perspective about soldiers dying with honour. With an overwhelming death toll of over 9 million during WWI, Owen depicts how the soldier’s die with the repetition of “Only the...” to emphasise the sounds of war that kills soldiers in the alliteration ‘rifles’ rapid rattle.’ Owen also illustrates the conditions that the soldiers died in and how they were not given a proper funeral in the cumulation ‘no prayers nor bells,/ nor any voice of mourning.’ Owen painfully reminds us that we have become complacent with the deaths of soldiers, seeing them as a necessary sacrifice during human conflict. Thus, Owen shows us what we have overlooked about war, that is, that it brings endless death and long-lasting grief to the surviving soldiers and the people around
