During my time in high school, I was never a person who possessed the habit of procrastinating. I always tried my best to do my most important task first, such as homework, school projects, and other assignments that were due for extracurricular groups I attended. Then, I would do least important activities second such as going shopping, watching television, and hanging out with my friends. By not procrastinating, I made phenomenal grades in high school. I made the honor roll most of the time because I would do assignments on time, and I could understand what my teacher was teaching. Now that I attend college, my way of doing my school work has slightly changed. Due to a poor understanding of my school assignments, waiting till the last minute to start my work once it has been assigned, and not prioritizing properly, I have developed a habit of procrastinating. Procrastinating is a habit I am working hard to get rid of.
My goal is to completely break my practice of procrastination what I consider a bad habit. Procrastinating is an act I know that could evolve into something greater than school responsibilities such as skipping class, failing assignments, and dropping out school. If I continue to practice putting less important activities before what is more important, that could one day cause me to neglect my family. So, I want to break this habit of procrastination because it will improve my grades drastically, improve my chances of graduating with honors, and most of all, I will become a better person. I have about six more weeks remaining in my first semester as a freshman. I will take two weeks practicing to get a better understanding of my work, applying another two weeks practicing to start my assignments timely, and prio...

...and watch television for two hours Monday-Thursday. I will spend more hours working on my assignments rather than hanging out with friends and watching television. I plan keep this schedule through the remainder of this semester. I know if I follow the plan I have I will not only improve my grades, but I will also prioritize better when it comes to my school work.
If I continue to follow each step for the remaining weeks for the semester, my habit of procrastination will no longer exist when it comes to doing my school work. I will know how to approach my school work with no distraction and I will know how to get my assignments turned in on time. My plans for me to be successful will come from my work ethic of studying more and doing extra activities less. Understanding my assignments and prioritizing better will cause me to start on my work when assigned to me.
Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
School takes up a large portion of my time as it is, but I easily become distracted. When I arrive back home from school, my phone’s notifications are being checked, and all of a sudden an hour has gone by. While completing homework on the computer, I will open another tab and end up straying away from the assignment. In addition to that, my study habits could definitely be improved. Whether it be studying or doing homework, I always end up procrastinating. I would study the night before a quiz that I have known about for a week. Procrastination has been a thing I have done for years and I aim to stop doing
Anxiety. Regret. Frustration. Restlessly glancing at the clock, cringing every time I do. Staring at a blinking cursor, waiting for inspiration. Spending a restless night trying to squeeze out something to turn in the next day. This is a process known all too well by me, and most high schoolers in America, one known as: Procrastination. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. It’s a tempting prospect, putting off your responsibilities to do something enjoyable, but it should be avoided at every possibility. Procrastination causes your grades to suffer, causes your mental health to suffer, and causes you to learn bad habits for the future.
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
One poor habit that I happen to share with most college/ high school students in particular is procrastination. This curse of pushing off my work led me to a lower GPA in high school than I really should have gotten. It wasn't because that I didn’t understand my classes; it was just the lack of time and effort I put into them. Not only did prolonging my work affect my grades, but it also altered my life. In fact, procrastination led me to not reaching my goals such as going straight to a four year college. Sadly, this trapped me into showing no great
First, like most other students, I procrastinate way too often. This is one of my academic shortcomings. For example, the week that Bachelor of Science in Public Health application was due, I also had three other papers and two tests due in the same week. Now, the smart side of me told me to start my assignments, especially my BSPH statement of interest, weeks ago so it would not all run together. With that being said, the typical college student in me politely declined to start any of my assignments early; so, here I am. My week has consisted of no sleep and many, many cups of coffee. Thank you
A few things I tried include treating myself after an assignment was done, remembering the stress-free moment when you finish an essay, and the ten minute technique. Out of the three attempts to squash my tendency to procrastinate, only one seemed to work. The first thing I tried that worked, was to set a timer for 10 minutes, and just work for those 10 minutes. Next, I would give myself a 10 minute break. This was an idea suggested by my professor in the beginning of the year. This worked at first; I would get into my writing mojo, and not stop for an hour or so. Suddenly, the ten minute technique stopped working. I would sit down, and get distracted, or do anything but my assignment. This was when I realized that this habit would take a lot longer to break that I originally thought. The one good thing about my procrastination, is that it lead me to another discovery about
...rs tend to overestimate the degree of unpleasantness of a task” (Lay, 46). Procrastination is a problem that when left unchecked can cause serious problems in every aspect of a person’s life. The solution for students can be as easy as sticking to a goal or as hard as denying themselves a prize when they missed the deadline on a project. The type of solution a person uses depends on what works best for that student, but a schedule to help stay goal positioned never hurt.
The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).
A. H. C. Chu and J. N. Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. People with these adequate dilatory skills have probably learned from their deficient habits in the past that may help everyone know that the view of holding off can change. Writing this essay has changed my view on procrastination slightly, as I can see how it can be good for you. With my siblings, free time is limited. So taking time to do something more entertaining helps me take a break from stressful work. Then when I get back to it I feel more confident that I can focus and finish it. That’s an example of active procrastination for me. Frank Partnoy shows historical views on procrastination, in an article about his book, such as how “The Greeks and Romans generally regarded procrastination highly. The wisest leaders embraced procrastination and would basically sit around and think and not do anything unless they absolutely had to” (Gambino 2012). Those Romans and Greeks were able to enjoy their time of relaxation, using procrastination as a healthy tool rather than a bad habit. Even wise leaders used it! What an amazing realization that we get procrastination from
My plan for being successful this semester is to keep track of my due dates so i don't fall behind like i previously have but i am confident that i will make a skedual that will fit my time
Procrastination is a tendency to postpone, put off, delay, reschedule, take a rain check on, put on ice, hold off, or to defer what is necessary to reach a particular goal.(Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus, Third Edition. Philip Lief Group 2009.) While attending College some students find it hard to juggle work, family, and friends. Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.
For this semester, I have set three goals that I will be working towards to make improvements on. The first goal I set is to start an assignment the day that it is assigned so that I do not procrastinate. The second goal I have set for this semester is to be more organized with my materials. The last goal for this semester is to relieve my stress in a positive way. By working on these goals during the next couple of weeks, it will make my life a little less stressful.
Do not procrastinate. Choose a task and start working on it. Delaying a task will only make it that much hard to get started. Commit yourself to working on the task for a specific amount of time each day until it is completed.
We learned about money management and time management, smarter reading and note-taking, working in groups, using available resources effectively, making plans for life and of course, being happy. I found those extremely useful. They are not only for this class, but also for a working environment, for our daily life. One of my weakness is procrastination, which is the biggest challenge for me to achieve my goals. From the beginning of this quarter, I set up an daily agenda, and I had been using it for the whole quarter! It is amazing for me to get in the habit of making agenda and do work according to it. Time blocking, another strategy presented in class is useful, which reduces my
