Depression in 21st Century A lot of people complain about depression nowadays. Every year almost one million people die of this disease. An alarming fact is that most of those people are young. Thinking about the reason of such a situation we can come to conclusion that the main problem for those is the lack of time. At present people work much more than they used to a few decades ago. They are either forced by they economic situation or encouraged by career prospects. Nevertheless, they do not have enough free time to develop their interests and hobbies. Another important factor is that they live in a constant stress which does not allow them to enjoy anything in their everyday life. They feel depressed because they are in a hurry all the time. They even think that it is fashionable to live this way. However, such “fast life” does not give them any chance to lead a healthy lifestyle, which is another factor contributing to their unhappiness. Moreover, people seem to forget what should be really important in their lives and they often worry about things which are not worth of it. In addition to this, people do not treat their problem with depression seriously enough and they refuse to ask for help. Taking all of the above into consideration we should think what can those depressed people do to be happy in their lives. In today’s fast- moving world it is more and more common to work from the early morning till the late evening, having only short breaks to eat lunch or just to have a snack. People do not even have time for their families, let alone developing their interests or hobbies. Another idea would be to have longer hours open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Even if it is not open for the whole day, longer hours might allow more comfort ability for everyone. All types of depression share at least one common symptom. It is commons from the person who suffers from any form of depression to feel an unshakable sadness, anxious, or empty mood. Major depressive disorder also known as unipolar depression or recurrent depressive disorder is the most severe depressive disorder out of all of the depressive in my estimation. Major depressive disorder is a condition in which affects a person’s family, work or school life, sleeping, eating and general health. It is important to emphasize that we can understand the mechanics of this disorder and how it affects people with major depressive disorder.

Many more people suffer from clinical depression because they do not seek treatment. They may feel that depression is a personal weakness, or try to cope with their symptoms alone. On the other hand, some people are comfortable with admitting their symptoms and seeking help. Such a discrepancy may account for the differences in reported cases of depression between men and women, which indicate that more than twice the numbers of women than men are clinically depressed. This disorder is an especially prominent topic because most episodes are brought on by negative life events, meaning anyone is susceptible to the disorder at any point in their lives. This contrasts disorders that are genetically acquired, and makes depression a disorder that is much more common and dangerous. Despite it’s prevalence today, depression is very responsive to treatment; the only argument surrounding the disorder is which course of treatment is the most effective, both short-term and long-term. Since the late 1950s, depression was most commonly treated through medication, such as antidepressants. Although prescription medication is predominantly used as the first course of treatment for major depression, many scientific studies have shown that therapy, such as cognitive and behavioral therapies, are much more effective, due to a change in patterns of thinking and behavior.
As we have seen in some of the literary works we have studied, such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and The Dead Poet Society, depression is a common problem in our society. Many of us have known someone who has suffered from depression. Depression is a condition that affects everyone – not just the person diagnosed with it. It is imperative that depression be recognized and treated at an early stage, before it becomes an endangering factor in a person’s life.
As Americans, we’re always on the go. When hungry and have no time there are many fast and healthy items available. In addition to these healthier options, it is also possible to pack their own snack or meal. People often become lazy when it comes to just cooking their meals at home. This choice allows the customer, to control what they eat.
According to the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 250 million people in the United States. Having knowledge that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, 35-40 percent of Americans skip breakfast. Without breakfast, some people become less able to do physical work in the late morning hours and some students do not perform well in the classroom. When one skips breakfast, their body shuts down their metabolism in an attempt to preserve what it contains, which causes drowsiness. Since metabolism accounts for approximately 70 percent of the body’s energy expenditure, the consumption of a healthy first meal of the day is encouraged. There are many reasons why breakfast should be a part of people’s everyday diet, but some people just do not have time to eat breakfast.
We’re growing kids and we shouldn’t be forced to go four or more hours without a bite to eat or a drink, except for the occasional sip out of the water fountain. I realize that a lot of teachers will think that writing from a student’s point of view, it’s beyond biased to say that student’s SHOULD be allowed to eat and drink in class, but I honestly believe that this sort of thing should be allowed.
