We as young adults, deal with many social and emotional issues, which can be seen through depression. Depression, is a state of having low moods and can be described as feeling “blue”or unhappy. Depressed people may feel so sad at times that they withdraw and lose interest in activities that they once loved to do. In worst cases, some people even commit suicide. Generally, depression does not result from a single event but from a combination of multiple events in life and other personal factors. The number of factors that may cause depression varies from person to person. There could be abuse that happened in the past, conflict from family disputes and personal factors. It could also be from a death or loss and the person cannot get over their grief. Some depression just comes from having an illness. The normal ups and downs in life means that everyone feels sad or "blue" from time to time, but if emptiness and absence of hope have taken place and will not go away, there may be depression in life. When depression is in someone's life they can get very hopeless and not even enjoy thin...
Depression was once believed to affect mainly adults for various reasons. It was hardly ever seen in minors or college students. Today depression is more common in younger populations mainly college students. There are many things that can trigger depression in college students, such as the environment, anxiety, and the fear of failure. All these things can contribute to depression in college students and sometimes cannot be seen. Many college students will never seek help, and many wont ever admit that they struggle with it.
A culture’s view of depression differs from one another. For example, cross-cultural psychiatrists have found that depression can be expressed in somatic and emotional terms, ‘“In “somaticizing cultures, “depressive experiences may be expressed as complaints of weakness, tiredness, ‘imbalance’ (Chinese and Asian cultures), ‘nerves’ and headaches (in Latino and Mediterranean cultures)…”’ Due to the diversity of experiences within the different cultures, there is no universal entity incorporating all views of culture in defining depression. The views of a culture toward mental disorders have a great impact on the prevalence of certain individuals within a culture compared to another culture. For example, Japan has a significantly lower prevalence depression rate compared to the United States, “the World Health Survey Initiative estimated a twelve-month prevalence of mood disorders to be around 3.1% in Japan compared with 9.6% in the United States.” The concept of “depression” is the factor to account for in this difference of vulnerability.
There are many life obstacles that cause depression. Depression can be very critical in some cases. There a few different types of depressions disorders. There is persistent depressive disorder, perinatal depression, and Psychotic depression. We also have seasonal affective disorder. Depression is a serious disorder, life threatening in many cases. Just like there are many kinds of depression disorders there are many things that trigger depression. For example relationship problems, insecurities, illnesses, etc. It all depends on how a person is. Some people tend to be more sensitive and allow things to get to them faster. There are also people who have a strong personality and stand up for themselves and don’t allow any type of negativity
The study summarizes the recent findings in relationship between depression and death. Many earlier studies seem to have pointed out the connection between depression and cigarette smoking. The study mainly discusses depression and ischemic heart disease. Initially, it discuss about a study conducted between communities with its clinical populations. Next, it discusses about the confounding effect of cardiac risk factors. It further discusses examining cardiac patients rather than healthy individuals to find out the relationship between depression and Coronary Artery disease. The study also discusses several other issues before concluding the controversies with depression and mortality. This information is going to be useful in my research paper because I intend on explaining the relationship between depression and its physical effects on the body.
Do you ever feel down and out? Fill yourself loosing interest in thing you used to love? Then you might have depression. Depression is a period of time in which you feel sad. I know you are saying to yourself you are just a little down, but depression is a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often unable to live in a normal way. Everybody, at a certain point in life, feels blue or sad. The feeling of being sad is usually short-termed and it passes away in the matter of hours or days. Depression is a common, but a very serious illness, so it is really important for the person who has it to seek for treatment. In majority of cases, depression is curable, and that is why people should ask for help when they are in need. There are many ways to effectively treat depression like medications, psychotherapies, and other methods. Furthermore, there are several forms of depressive disorders: major depressive disorder (major depression), dysthymic disorder (dysthymia), minor depression, psychotic depression, postpartum depression, seasonal affective disorder, and bipolar disorder. All of those types of depression are most likely caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. The signs and of depression are numerous, but not everyone experiences the same symptoms. The most common symptoms are: persistent sad or empty feelings, feelings of hopelessness, insomnia, overeating, and others. There are several forms of depressive disorders, which are considered to be serious illnesses, so it is very important to know their causes, signs, and symptoms to be able to make a diagnosis and treat them properly (“Depression”).
Major Depressive Disorder, according to Coon, is a mood disorder in which the person has suffered one or more intense episodes of depression. Major Depressive Disorder falls under mood disorders subtopic depressive disorders (Coon 2013). “Psychologist have come to realize that mood disorders (major disturbances in emotion) are among the most serious of all psychological conditions. In any given year, roughly 9.5 percent of the U.S. population suffers from a mood disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2011a)” (Coon 2013). I was one of the 9.5 percent. I have decided to write on this topic because I want to understand what causes it. I have been depressed before without medication or counseling and I wanted to know why do you get depressed and how does it impact you. This essay will talk about disorder information, disorder triggers, research on depression, treatment for depression, and theorist’s experiments for Major Depression Disorder.
Clinical depression is a serious medical condition. It is not a case of "the blues", or being sad sometimes. Clinical depression is sadness that never goes away for those who have it. Sometimes it can be treated, and sometimes it is just something that will never be solved. Other symptoms of Clinical Depression may include, having self hate, feeling sad, anxious, or having “empty”feelings. Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness. Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, angry, fatigue and decreased energy (Clinical Depression). Also difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions, Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping, overeating, or appetite loss, and lastly thoughts of suicide (Clinical Depression).
As Descartes argued, the mind and the body are the base of our existence, and many different cultures view different illnesses positively or negatively. Certain cultures, like the Hmong, believe that epilepsy is a good spiritual thing, but others, such as Western culture, believe that it is medically bad because it could cause death. Many illnesses can be viewed both negatively and positively, some more than others. However, one such illness that is mostly viewed negatively is depression. It is viewed negatively in a symptomatic sense – the symptoms are useless – and in a diagnostic sense – those diagnosed with depression are not actually depressed and the illness itself does not exist; it is simply an excuse to be lazy. There are many different approaches to depression and most of them consider that this illness is negative; however, depression is actually an evolutionary tactic subconsciously employed by humans that can have very positive effects.
Depression is defined as "a state of despondency marked by feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness" (Coon, 2001). Some people can mix up depression with just having the blues because of a couple of bad days or even weeks. It is already said that depression affects about one sixth of the population or more (Doris, Ebmeier, Shajahan, 1999). Depression can happen in any age range from birth to death. The cause of depression is still obscure and becoming clear that a number of diverse factors are likely to be implicated, both genetic and environmental. Some causes are leading stressful lives, genetic factors, a previous depressive episode, and the personality trait neuroticism (Doris, et al., 1999).
What is depression? Depression is an illness that can take over a person’s life---it can take their happiness and their will to live. This illness can effect adults, teenagers, and even kids. “Depression is an equal opportunity disorder---- it can affect anyone of any group, any background, any race, any gender, and any age. It is the great leveler of all groups and can take the greatest and the smallest of us all and reduce us to the pain and nothingness that is depression (Nydegger 1)”. Depression is an emotion most people may feel they have experienced, but little do they know it’s just the basic emotions we feel. It is important to identify the symptoms of depression, the types of depression, who can get them and how they manifest, in other to be able to treatment them.
Beck’s theory of depression focuses on negative thoughts being the cause of depression. Beck believed that negative thoughts generated by dysfunctional beliefs were usually the primary cause of depressive symptoms. His theory of depression showed how early experiences could lead to the formation of dysfunctional beliefs, which could later on turn into negative thoughts. He focused on the fact that these negative automatic thoughts were what lead an individual to become depressed. His main argument was that depression started with a negative view of oneself, instead of having a negative view of oneself due to depression. He believed there was a direct relationship between the amount and severity of someone’s negative thoughts and the severity of their depression symptoms, so basically the more negative thoughts a person had the more depressed they would become. Seligman’s theory of learned helplessness looked at the depression from a different point of view. Seligman believed that depression was caused by a series of setbacks, such as a death in the family that led a person to feel a ...

The silent killer that takes lives without warning, punishment, or any sympathy; depression is truly one of the most prominent mental illnesses in the world. Depression is defined as a mental illness inducing a severe and staunch feeling of sadness. The term depressed is coined in English as a temporary sadness that everyone experiences in their life. Despite that depression is more active in women, it is still one of the most common mental illnesses in the world. It affects anybody, regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic standing. Regardless of all these facts, surprisingly little is known about depression, however, scientists have been able to hypothesize major causes, effects, and treatments for the disability affecting over
“Depression is a condition in which a person feels discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated or disinterested in life in general. When these feelings last for a short period of time, it may be a case of "the blues"” (Understanding the Facts), but when such feelings last for more than two weeks and when the feelings interfere with daily activities it is likely that you may be in a major depressive state.
