Courage is something that all of us possess. We just must choose whether to use it or not use it. Courage expresses something different to everyone. It makes you want to do something that is right for the sake of you and other people that are around you. It makes you want to help someone in need. Courage makes you want to take a stand for justice. But what does being courageous truly mean? Courage can mean that you have the strength to do something for your neighborhood or for the entire world. According to “An Act of Courage”, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white man because she believed that it was her right to be sitting in that seat, as it was one of the designated seats for African Americans. She ended up going to jail for her act of courage, but that same act of courage that she demonstrated inspired others around her to take a stand towards that very same cause. African Americans started to rally for equality and started a bus boycott. Those great acts of courage to make a stand to want to change what you don’t like, ended up resulting in The Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the African American civil rights movement opportunities were sought to spark a chance at improving conditions in the south. Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the Montgomery, Alabama bus was the fire to that spark. Rosa, standing up for herself something anyone person in today’s world would do, was arrested and put in jail. While Rosa was in jail she caught the eye of many people in the Civil Rights Movement, including the leaders. The Civil Rights leaders protested her arrest and hired lawyers to aid her in her trial. Although she was found guilty and was fined fourteen dollars for the cost of the court case, which lasted on thirty minutes, she wasn’t done yet. Rosa Parks has affected the society we live in today in many ways, she is the most influential person the black community has ever seen.
The dictionary definition of courage is bravery or boldness. In the set texts of Little Women and Treasure Island, courage is defined through the interaction of the characters, the situation and their reactions to it. Thus, there are different aspects of courage explored throughout the texts resulting in either in physical or psychological pain or a mixture to the characters.
In life there are many terms that are relative to individual cultures. That means that the definition is different depending on the culture's location and its persons believe. The definition for one such term, courage, as defined by both Daniel Webster and Funk & Wagnalls is "That quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or difficulties/ opposition with firmness/fearlessness." Rosa Parks was on a bus. She was minding her own business when there was a white person on and did not have a seat. She was choicen to give up her seat but she didn´t she was courageous. On Source 1 it said that, " If an African American passenger was sitting in the row, he or she was expected to give up the seat and stand. Rosa Parks was one of those many people who protested and brought change to injustice against African Americans. In the text it says “Three riders complied. Parks did not…’Are you going to stand up’ the driver demanded. Rosa Parks looked straight at him and said: ‘No.’... ‘Well I’m going to have you arrested’ Parks replied ‘You may do that.’” This shows how involved Parks was and how calm she was in her peaceful protest. This also demonstrates how Parks believed so strongly in her cause she was willing to be arrested. Parks was arrested and it caused protests all over but most significant it caused the Montgomery bus boycott.

In her society people admired Parks for her strength and courage to stand up for what is right. The people admired Parks for her courage and bravery, to stand up to the unjust conditions, and for standing up to face authority. She was also referred to by many supporters as, “ the first lady of civil rights”, and “ the mother of the freedom movement”. Many people in her society were thankful for the changes she made.
