Praiseworthiness has many different attributes that makes someone praiseworthy. When someone shows their peers they are brave they will try and accomplish what many may consider impossible. Being praiseworthy has many advantages: one being earning respect from others, but it also has disadvantages, such as when people make a mistake, it will come with much more criticism. How can the term “praiseworthy” be defined? According to Merriam-Webster.com praiseworthiness means someone that is deserving of approval or admiration. This is important because bravery can show leadership which is a trait that all historically praiseworthy people share. In the story “The Foolish Lion and the Clever Rabbit”, the rabbit shows a perfect example of both bravery and leadership. The lion was very ruthless and killed all the animals that came near him. The animals decided to choose someone each day to offer to the lion. When it came time for the rabbit he was very wise and took his time nibbling on bushes and didn't show up. Making the lion very angry, he said, “who does this rabbit think he is” then he said tomorrow “I will kill every animal here to teach him a lesson” By the next morning the rabbit arrived and the lion pounced on him very angrily. The rabbit begged for him to have pity and told the lion there was another lion out there that slowed him down; the lion got even more angry and demanded to be taken to the other lion. The rabbit took him well and told him he down there cooling off in the well. The lion roared at his own reflection until he jumped to his own death. The rabbit freed all of the animals in the jungle by using his head to come up with a plane and having the bravery to see it through and he is praiseworthy for doing
There are many other things that take courage to do including public speaking, standing up for those who are unable to do it themselves, and even getting up on a stage and performing in front of a large crowd. For many, public speaking is extremely hard and can be quite debilitating, and for someone to ignore these fears, be courageous, and speak from the heart to a large crowd can be quite an accomplishment. There are also many courageous men and women in the military that are willing to give their lives for the defense of their nation. Some view this as the ultimate form of courage, and in some cases it is, but what takes more courage, dying for a cause or living to be there to pick up the pieces and clean up the mess? Showing true courage is not always the most popular, glamorous, or easy thing to do. Even something as simple as being a man, who stands up in front of a crowd to read poetry, while dressed like a woman, can be one of the most courageous things of
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
This is important to have in a hero because without bravery, he could not lead and fight along with his army. Hector stood up to fight against Ajax in single combat (Sutcliff 42). Hector’s bravery makes him a hero because he is willing to fight despite the chances of him losing his life. “And Hector, seeing this, shouted the war cry like a huntsman crying on his hounds against a lion, and rushed forward at the head of his warriors, scattering the Greeks like spray.” (Sutcliff
As I look back on my own experiences, I have determined that there are leadership traits which we must enhance in order to become more effective leaders during irregular threats. I am inclined to choose courage as one of the most important leadership traits to serve as the foundation of effective leadership during an imminent irregular threat. Courage, defined as the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action, is the most important trait.
The International Women of Courage Awards is an award show where these women across the world that made a difference come and get rewarded for it. These women have changed the world and had a huge impact on society. Michelle Obama states “with every life they touch and every spirit they raise, women are creating ripples that stretch across the globe”. Bravery is important when having courage because you need bravery, which means to have fear, to succeed. The Monuments Men was an organization that went into the war to save art from Hitler or from getting damaged.
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
The definition of bravery in the Standard College Dictionary Canadian Edition is, "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness, calmness, and firmness." Bravery is a quality that is shown by many of the characters in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters are brave in their effort to protect physical well-being, personal values, their reputation and sanity. In the novel the characters exhibit genuine bravery in order to guard the things important to them.
Bravery is where people have a lot of courage to maybe sacrifice something for someone. There has been a lot of bravery throughout the world, and many people do it differently. Also bravery can be someone who does it when others don’t expect it to happen. Like in the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, the spiders captured the dwarves and Bilbo saved them, and led the spiders away from the dwarves. Such as the quote” I shall draw the spiders off, if I can; and you must keep together and make it in the opposite direction “( Tolkien, 165). Bilbo shows bravery because he led the spiders away from the dwarves, so the spiders wouldn’t hurt them. Bravery is someone who steps up when no one else wants to, and does things for others rather than worry about
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
Those characteristic traits are what I think makes a hero. We come in contact with heroes everyday. We may not know they’re heroes but whether we know or not doesn’t matter as long as the person they protected believes they are a hero. Just like the people serving our country...heroes, they are pure, true heroes. They have the courage to serve, they have the integrity to serve for America’s morals, they have the fidelity to keep their promises made to this country, and they have the determination to stand and fight for the United States of America. To me those qualities make a
For instance, Beowulf displays a daring hero while he tells Hrothgar he has no plan against the demon Grendel, ‘What is your plan?’ ‘The best plan...No plan.’ ‘You are the bravest man I have ever met...If anyone can kill grendel it is you,’(Nye 33). In this quote, the mighty hero Beowulf, represents the qualities of a hero, bravery, because he comes up with a plan while he is fighting grendel. He doesn’t need to plan out a cunning because he uses the strength and light of his hands. In addition, Beowulf announces to his men bravely, ‘Wait ...for me for two days and two nights… and do not risk your lives in coming to look for me,’ (Nye 64-65). In this passage, Beowulf, recklessly jumps in the fen. He tells his men only to wait for him for two days and two nights. Beowulf is a brave hero because he puts himself before his men and risks his life for everyone. To sum it all up, Beowulf’s heroism is represented while he was a young warrior with his reckless
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?
of integrity, in that he always does what he believes is right, and what he
When a person thinks about what it means to be a hero to another person, generally they believe it just means doing something nice or kind for that person. Now if you were to ask the same question of that person that was helped, they would probably give you a far more detail description of what a hero is or meant to them. The difference in understanding what people believe a true hero is, you first must understand what it takes to be a real hero. A hero is not just about people who perform simple acts of kindness for others, it is more about the magnitude of those acts they perform, which will usually determine their hero status.
There are plenty examples of what everyone thinks is a hero. You have your classic well-known heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman..etc. Then some others say that just ordinary people are heroes. People who do small things that have great effects, like all the people who stop to help those in the current natural disasters. But what really makes a hero and how would you define it? In my opinion, a hero has to be loyal, strong, and humble.
