Throughout my short lived life, I have heard the saying, “persistence pays off” many times. This has always made me wonder about what exactly is persistence, and if it really does pay off. Persistence comes from the root word persist. Persist has two different meaning, continuing firmly or obstinately in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty of opposition, or continue to exist. Continuing in an opinion or course of action even through the hard times is very important in sports, and in life in general. The word persistent can be used in grammar in two different ways. He has used over thousands of words. He used the word persist, which is a shortened, older version of persistent. He used it in two plays Troilus and Cressida and King Edward III according to. In Troilus and Cressida, He says, “To have her back returned; thus to persist” ("Persist." Shakespeare's). In the other play, King Edward III, he says,” But burn their neighbour towns, and so persist” ("Persist." Shakespeare's). This shows that even the great Shakespeare was able to use this word. It has continued even to this day. I remember them telling me to keep working, or to keep trying and never give up. They continued to do this for me. The last couple of weeks the have been persistent in telling me to get scholarship applications done. From them being like that, it has become a part of me. I was persistent in Junior High and I still am as a senior in High school. This skill has helped me a countless number of times. Persistent has a lot of different meanings for me. The first definition that comes to mind is having the heart to keep doing it over and over no matter what the end result is. I have learned this meaning through the many hours, and days of practice that I’ve had. I remember times when I would be in the gym going over the same shot time after time because I knew that I had to perfect it. It would always start the same way, a jab step to the left and a rip to the right. From there it was two dribbles towards the rim and a pull up jump shot.
