Decreasing the Drop-Outs (draft)
Students dropping out from school are among one of the larger problems faced in the country. It is a serious problem that is often ignored by the schools and districts, and can offer even simple solutions to keep kids in the classroom. From the personal view of a normal student, school is stressful—but it’s supposed to be a challenge. It’s practically divided into few categories: kids who strive to learn and be successful and kids who don’t wish to have anything to do with school. It doesn’t make them bad kids, or even bad students. Drop-outs report that some of the main reasons they drop out of school is not seeing value in the work they do. Almost half of them said the classes were not interesting, and were bored of their work, and say it’s among the main reasons students would stop attending classes (Furger “How to End the Dropout Crisis”). Expectations also tend to run high for students by their teachers. Regular students in school also debate to themselves to make the decision of dropping out from time to time, from the stress levels of piling assignments. Larger high schools also can be difficult for students who attend, which gives them less one-on-one attention from teachers. Immigrants even, have a much more increased chance of dropping out from school from the transition of moving from one country to another. Teachers playing a roll and becoming more helpful and understanding of trouble students have outside of school, such as connecting and being open with their students, could make the largest difference. When I was little I saw the world around me differently. I get that everyone has a story and that they believe they are special because no one can tell their story. Well, I don’t feel special. I realized that we aren’t so different from each other after all. We all grow up believing that what we went through no one else did. However, the reason I don’t feel special is because I'm sure when you’re reading all these papers, trying to figure out who deserves this scholarship, your probably reading the same story with the same desperate tone. I'm not different from any of the other applicants, but by this essay I am. You’re not going to hear a desperate person asking for sympathy and that they deserve the scholarship because college is too expensive.
The documentary “Dropout Nation” shows how difficult it is for students who live in poorer communities to receive a good education and graduate high school. Students and teachers are interviewed in this documentary to show that these students are intelligent but are not able to graduate due to their circumstances. These examples help explain the concepts learned in chapter 10 about social institutions and how it is affected by politics, education, and religion.
High Schools That Work (HSTW), a school improvement initiative of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), has documented achievement gains by career and technical education (CTE) students at participating sites (Bottoms and Presson 2000). At HSTW sites participating in 1996 and 1998 assessments (Frome 2001), CTE students showed math and science achievement equal to the national average of all high school students—and exceeded the national average of CTE students in math, science, and reading.
The article Should the Obama Generation Drop Out, written by Charles Murray, a politicial scientist, is the idea of disregarding the bachelor 's degree as a job qualification. With his leadership role as the President, Murray believes Barrack Obama should be the one to make this happen. “It 's what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it” (Murray 1). Not every family can afford to send their child to a four-year college to get a bachelors degree, while not every child wants to obtain a bachelors. Long ago, receiving education was once something only the rich could afford; it was a luxury. Nowadays it is open to everyone, but many students enter college only to discover that they are underprepared, and in turn they become disenchanted. David Leonhardt’s article, The College Dropout Boom, addresses the issues that are apparent in the education system and how it contributes to the gap between the upper and lower class while Access to Attainment by Abby Miller, Katherine Valle, Jennifer Engle, and Michelle Cooper calls to improve access to college education for today’s students. This is incredibly important because many students either drop out or never attended college and in today’s time, having a Bachelor’s degree has become a requirement
A child’s first day of school is often viewed as a rite of passage; the first step on the road to a happy and successful life. This is true for most children from affluent families who live in the best school districts or can afford expensive private schools. But what if a child’s first day of school is nothing more than the first step on the road to poverty and possibly even illiteracy? The documentary Waiting for “Superman” addresses many issues in a failing school system and the innocent children that system leaves behind. Although the documentary spends little time suggesting parents’ roles in their children’s education, it clearly shows that we must make changes to help children from low-income families and improve the teacher’s unions.
It is apparent to everyone living in the United States, that we are the most diverse country in the world. Everywhere we go we encounter people of different backgrounds. However, it is also apparent that one race in particular is seen more than others. One of the fastest growing races in the United States in today’s day and age is the Hispanic one. Research has shown that Hispanics are among the fastest growing cultures in our country. This is obvious to just about everyone in the United States. As a Hispanic woman living in the U.S., it has come to my attention that along with being the fastest growing culture, we are also the culture with some of the highest high school dropout rates. This has become a major problem in our country and more predominately in states such as: California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It is crucial now more than ever that as the Hispanic population increases in the United States; we educate the children growing up in our country. However, as stated before, it is apparent that Hispanics have had the greatest numbers of high school dropouts. While not many people think of it to be so, the dropout rates among young Hispanic adults is one of the biggest problems our community faces. If there is nothing done about this problem, our entire country will suffer in many ways. Therefor, we must come up with some solutions to lower these dropout rates before it is too late. A few solutions that have surfaced are; programs in schools to prevent dropouts, educating parents about what an education will do for their children, and making a change in what is being taught in schools.
“More than 3,000 youngsters will drop out will drop out today and every day for the rest of the school year, until about 600,000 are lost by June. One in four will pass through the correctional system, and at least two or three of those will be dropouts.” (Barber pg. 209) In Benjamin Barber’s essay, “Americans Skip School,” the American Educational Systems underlying problems are revealed and expose society’s ignorance to the importance of receiving an education. Statistics display the quantity of students in America that drop out of school and become criminals, nonetheless Americans continue to sidestep the issue. How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
Instead of allowing dropouts to rely on government assistance, high schools should implement volunteer programs to keep students in school.
Overall “student performance was lower in the early 1900s than it is today, quite possibly because schools felt much less pressure than they do today to achieve equity and excellence among students” (Rossi, 1994, p.4). While many of the challenges schools encountered during the early 20th century are the same challenges in present day schools, they were not addressed back then because they were not a priority. The focus on equity and excellence that has been developed since the turn of the century is worthy of praise (Rossi, 1994, p.4).
Students who are homeless are twice as likely as non-homeless students to have to be expelled, drop out of high school, or repeat a grade. Many high school dropouts not only have household as a disadvantage, but they also drop out of school at a rate of 36% due to physical or learning disabilities (Aratani, & Cooper, 2015). Some of the behaviors that are more common among the school dropouts include relocating during the high school years, generate a sensation of feeling alienated one feels like a student who does not fit the mold of the classroom, or one who waits behind because of some reason. It makes the student loose motivation and, therefore, give up finally and then decide to drop out of
Expectations of today’s educational qualifications for high school students are different than it was in the past. It is not uncommon to hear about a student who did not graduate from school. As shown in table 1, 97 students from Stanly County dropped out of school in the 2011- 2012 school year (“Grade 7-13 Dropout Counts and Rates (pdf.62kb)”). Last school year 3.01 percent of North Carolina’s high school students dropped out of school according to the 2011-12 Consolidated Data Report, as a result the total number of students who dropped out of high school in the 2012 year is 13,488. It is also noted that the top five reasons NC students drop out of school are: 1. Attendance, 2. Enrollment in a Community College, 3. Unknown, 4. Moved, School status unknown, 5. Lack of Engagement. (“Dropout prevention and Intervention”) This number is very high considering that there are only five major high schools in the Stanly county district. This is why I think it is important that something should be done to reduce the high school dropout rate in Stanly County.
Many high school students succeed with a little leniency through their four years. The transfer from high school to college becomes overwhelming and a struggle for some. For students do not comprehend the importance of changing more than their location during the transition. A student must be psychologically, physically, and emotionally mature to pursue college and not venture into a point of no return. Dropping out of college makes the outlook of the conversion difficult to acquire. Individuals should take their time on deciding which college and/or university is the best match for them. There are various reasons that cause persons not to prosper. Issues that individuals may come upon might leave a lifelong scar. Matters such as these should not be as prevalent, creating a problem in the future for the well-being of our local communities and nation. The awareness of the causes of students dropping out will help educators, mentors, writers, and others to prevent occasions like this. Soon the dropout rate will increase and the hope for everyone being educated to acquire the needed knowledge to deal with upcoming improvements and preventions. The need for high school students to transfer into college smoothly and maintain self-discipline is significant. Anne Mallinson, Mark Kantrowitz, and Caralee Adams support this indication as well, providing several respectable points.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”).
