If there is anything I have learned after joining the military, it would have to be the ability to pick up on my superior’s indirect cues. However, I did find it quite interesting reading that subordinates generally are more indirect with their superiors, such as in the case of the pilots and co-pilots presented within Deborah Tannen’s writing. For me at least, being quite direct without losing politeness or respect for the individual being spoken to seems to be quick and efficient, rather than having to drag out conversation longer than need be. While I don’t mean to sound boring, I do feel that being direct can paint clearer pictures or present situations in a brighter light for clarified understanding. Though it is true that my superiors
do speak quite indirectly, there is nothing lost in translation due to the manner in which our minds have been trained to process information, thus military personnel don’t seem to have any problems with such indirectness. Perhaps the way in which individuals are raised and cultural mindset have greater influence than I had originally thought. Directness, though to a great number of people can come off as impolite, seems to be the most efficient as well as least time consuming way to get a point across.
In her article “But What Do You Mean” Deborah Tannen, claims that there is a huge difference in the style of communicating between men and women. Tannen breaks these down into seven different categories; apologies, criticism, thank-yous, fighting, praise, complaints, and jokes. With each of these she compares men to women by explaining the common misconceptions that each of the genders do. The different style of communication can cause some problems at the workplace and even affect the environment. The different styles of communication has been around forever and almost becomes a “ritual”(299). Tannen is effective with mainly women and not men. In the Article “marked women”, Deborah Tannen explains the social manner of judging women by their appearance or other factors, but not judging men for the same reasons. Tannen uses her observation during a conference meeting of four women and eight men to analyze how each woman in the meeting was marked while men were not. Again Deborah points out the issue of how one gender writing about the other is either portrayed as prejudiced or sexist.

Being called by certain words just because of your gender and race is something us in our society have always done to discriminate against each other. Nowadays many have of us are discriminated for who we are but African Americans and women tend to suffer more from it. I believe that both do not receive the same amount of respect as men and other races do, and it is something that society should change because we all are equal as any other in this world. I recently read two texts from two authors who are Deborah Tannen who says women should not be called “bossy” and earn the same amount of respect when giving authority, and Langston Hughes who says that “black” is a discriminating word for the African American people. This reminds me of what I tell people that are struggling in their relationships. Women and men express themselves differently. Women think, but men act. In her essay titled “It Begins at the Beginning”, professor of linguistics Deborah Tannen describes how girls’ and boys’ communication and language patterns differ from an early age. Tannen’s essay, which is adapted from her book titled You Just Don’t Understand, she states that in the world of communication boys and girls have vast differences, which makes itself apparent in the way that they play. The author backs this up with two explanations. First, is that people not only talk to boys and girls differently, but also accept different ways of talking from them. Second, children learn communication not only from their parents but also from their peers, and there are major differences in the way boys and girls play together and speak to each other.
The same idea of an unwavering hierarchy that extends beyond title and into the deep roots of merit are inherent in both concepts. Even dealing with other branches of service, there are certain expectations to be upheld when dealing with an officer, a senior enlisted, and even with your peers. Officers are saluted by enlisted members, just as junior enlisted members stand at parade rest when addressing Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). This level of respect would continue on into a civilian environment, although no saluting would be present in civilian attire. For example, a lower enlisted member could be at a restaurant or a bar over the weekend and happen to see his Company Commander. Even out of the work environment and military setting, the should still subtly take each other’s rank into account with everything said, such as a “Sir” every now and then from the enlisted member as well as avoiding certain comments that could get a soldier in trouble when dealing with his Chain of Command. This same level of military bearing will also carry on into encounters with civilians as military members and prior service member can almost always be spotted in a crowd with relative ease. Respect is probably the most important trait that needs to be shown towards your superiors. Every Armed forces branch in the United States of America has a chain of command in which respect is the main premise behind the entire organization. Respect backs the ideals and leadership within any chain of command. Respect is important in the design of the military system itself. You have to automatically trust and do what higher ranking cadet, or any cadre member says because they hold power and most likely have more experience then you. You must show them respect to because they have more knowledge and know how, not to mention they have earned the stop they are in. Respect also tires into the worrier’s ethos, which is an important aspect of what it means to be a member of the army.
Communication is critical to any organization and is necessary in every aspect especially in a military. Communication plays a role in Soldier development, peer to peer relations, Chain of command management, and virtually every aspect of a military operations. Commanders require it the most so that they can execute large scale operations without flaw and that alone requires ceaseless effective communication. If soldiers are informed and engaged, communications with other units are likely to be robust as well.
2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.” Clear and concise guidance was the meat a potatoes in my early stages of molding who I am today as a leader or, at least I think. It was quite simple, I have A, B, C and D to do, this is how I’m told I’ll do it, and then I execute. Seems simple, right?
