Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is a fast, up and coming performer from Austin, Texas. The single, “Dearly Departed,” from his junior album, And the War Came, was released back in October 2014. This particular song brought a lot of attention to the one man band, highlighting the energy of his performance and the mixture of old country and rock sound. “Dearly Departed” kicks off with a percussion sequence mixing clapping, tambourines, the floor tom, and heavy strumming to create a steady rhythm that forms the base of the song. Shakey and Esme Patterson, guest vocalist of the former band Paper Bird, come in with harmonized “ooh”-ing ending with a sigh-like “Well” which brings us into the first chorus. Their voices are compliments to each …show more content…
other, with Esme’s smooth, sweet sound ratcheted by Shakey’s coarseness. The chorus of this song is the solid realization that a relationship is haunted by the presence of a former partner.
“You and I both know” is repeated on end to emphasize that both parties recognize each other’s fault in the failing of the relationship. This concept is true whether the two people be either living or dead, both dead, or both living with the term ‘haunting’ really referring to being unable to forget. Anger and tension grows between them throughout the song as they seek to escape one another. Esme and Shakey trade lines back and forth in the verses, creating a fun dialogue. This brings some humor into the song and creates an engaged conversation that pulls you in. One of the great banter lines is this one: “And you had to tell your friends that my fangs were fake (S)/I just had to (E).” The track changes pace near the end when the lyrics take a more serious approach. “Even when one is dead and gone/It still takes two to make a house a home/Well I’m as lonesome as the catacombs/I hear you call my name but no one is there/except a feeling in the air.” A changed version of the chorus follows, with the ghost now being referred to as “you” instead of “me.” It’s debatable what that slight lyric change could mean but I think the major point being made is that even with all of the problems, the two people were still in
love. What’s great about this track is the energy coming from Shakey and Esme. You can hear the passion and drive pouring from their voices, filling “Dearly Departed” with their emotions. The song is highly entertaining and really hard to not sing along with. “Hurt” a song originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails which portrays self-harm and heroin addiction has been covered by many great artists including Johnny cash. When Johnny cash covered this song I got a deferent message from the lyrics while he sings it, maybe it is because of his voice or how he lived his life, but when he is singing this song I get a sense that he is singing about a loved one that has passed on, growing older, and his legacy.
This first song goes well with Holden because we see throughout the whole book, how Holden experiences loneliness. Holden says, “The first thing I did when I got off at Penn Station, I went into this phone booth. I felt like giving somebody a buzz” (Salinger 59) This is just one example of Holden’s loneliness. At this time he is just getting of the train realizing he has nobody to go to and nobody to talk to so he feeling like calling someone even if it’s just to talk to. n the song Talking To Myself, The lyrics say “Is anybody out there?/It feels like I'm talkin' to myself/No one seems to know my struggle/And everything I come from/Can anybody hear me?”(Eminem) This song by Eminem is a good example of Holden’s loneliness because throughout the song it
“God’s will be done, now I can get teeth,” Anse says after Addie’s death. To some people, it may seem weird that someone wants new teeth, and to others, it might make them wonder if he’s sad about his wife’s death. Anse Bundren, a middle-aged man, has a reputation of being a lazy and selfish person. But how does that play a role in As I Lay Dying? How has Anse’s relationship with his family, his wife, and himself affect the outcome of the story? Another thing about Anse is his view of Addie’s death. How has Anse Bundren become dead in the story, but is really still alive?

...e will be lost as sudden lightning or as wind. And yet the ghost of her remains reflected with the metal gone, a shadow as of shifting leaves at moonrise or at early dawn. A kind of rapture never quite possessed again, however long the heart lays siege upon a ghost recaptured in a web of song – Tennessee Williams” (Hoare).
The song “Strangers in the Night” was composed by Bert Kaempfert and lyrics by Charles
In the opening verse of the song, the speaker discusses the need to see her childhood home at least once more before moving on with her life. She shares with the current homeowner some of her experiences while growing up in the house. For instance, she says, “I know they say you can’t go home again, but I just had to come back one last time.” This shows that the speaker realizes that returning “home” is going to be a different experience than it was when she lived there, but she cannot resist the temptation of a final visit to the “house”. The speaker says that “Up those stairs in that little back bedroom, is where I did my homework and learned to play guitar. And I bet you didn’t know, under that live oak, my favorite dog is buried in the yard.” This indicates some of the significant memories the speaker has of her time in the house, such as honing her...
This song is essentially about how teenagers are mean. Holden sees everyone as a phony, and this song essentially describes his views on other people. There is the line “You’re never gonna fit in much, kid.” This is Holden in a nutshell because he doesn’t fit in.
Dave Lucas’s “November” and Mark Bibbins’ “Groupie” have similar themes and tone but different topics, settings, and poetic stylings. These poems express the melancholy of unrelated endings. By exploring the poet’s goals and examining theme, tone, poetic diction, end-stop, enjambment, and use of color in imagery, the reader can see how the poems reflect each other in their exploration of mournful endings.
The musical composition Guardian by Alanis Morissette connects with the character Gene, from John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Piece, as the lyrics represent Gene, and his relationship with Finny after, the “accident” in which Finny falls out of the tree and gets major injuries, which then affects his sports career.
... were still able to have love and care for one another. The first sentence from the poem that says, “ No Madonna and Child could touch” assures this, as it explains that the love they had was stronger than Mary and Christ. This is to show that even though the mother and child were dying, their love for each other was very strong that even death could not pull them apart. Another line from the poem that reads “She held a ghost smile between her teeth” reveals that even though her son is dying, she is trying to stay strong and hold a weak, forced smile to symbolise that she still has love and care for her son. In the quotation, the phrase “ghost smile” is a clear example of having love within death. The idea of the refugees slowly decaying into their deaths yet having love and care for one another makes the presentation of death more beautiful yet heart wrenching.
“Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?” A few months after the unexpected attack on New York City and Washington D.C, Alan Jackson debuted a new song on November 7, 2001 called “Where Were You.” It was launched only eight weeks after the attack. The song had won a Grammy and multiple country music awards. Ten years prior to his first debut of this song, fans still expect him to perform this song at all of his shows. It was a deep and meaningful tribute to the attack and the memorials of the lives that were lost and the buildings that were destroyed. On September 11, 2001, America was under attack. The World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and possibly the White House were all targets for the attack. Approximately
Funeral Blues by W. H. Auden is a short poem that illustrates the emotions that he is dealing with after the love of his life passes away. The tone of this piece evokes feelings that will differ depending on the reader; therefore, the meaning of this poem is not in any way one-dimensional, resulting in inevitable ambiguity . In order to evoke emotion from his audience, Auden uses a series of different poetic devices to express the sadness and despair of losing a loved one. This poem isn’t necessarily about finding meaning or coming to some overwhelming realization, but rather about feeling emotions and understanding the pain that the speaker is experiencing. Through the use of poetic devices such as an elegy, hyperboles, imagery, metaphors, and alliterations as well as end-rhyme, Auden has created a powerful poem that accurately depicts the emotions a person will often feel when the love of their live has passed away.
