Who could teach at an alternative high school, facing drug and alcoholic addicts, prostitutes, and suicidal teens every day? Who could spend most of her time volunteering with youth in church groups and study groups? Darla Weber volunteers many hours of her personal time helping youth and impacts their lives. Darla has improved the lives of many teenagers, making her a real hero. Darla Weber faced many obstacles while she taught at an alternative high school. While teaching at this school in St. Louis, Darla worked with troubled teens, including drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, and suicidal kids. She explained that when she arrived home she would often start crying because it was such a hard job with many risks. According to Ed, the …show more content…
She has many duties in the church; however, her main job is being the youth leader. Since she leads the high school Sunday morning class and Wednesday night youth group, she strengthens many teenagers’ faith. Much of her time is spent preparing for these classes, leading them, and doing service projects with them. It would be hard to even go about calculating how much time Darla spends volunteering for these activities. According to The Prospect, you can illuminate the life of others and develop the area you live in so that it is improved and in a more stable condition by volunteering (Zimmer). As you can see, Darla makes our community a better place. According to Darla, through the youth group she has created many strong bonds with students that don’t stop when they graduate. Her door is always open to talk, even if it is the middle of the night. Creating lifelong relationships makes it worth it despite the time and work she is required to put in (Weber). Darla noted, “I’m just a mother to a lot of people. But, (I hope) they can come to me for stuff they don’t feel comfortable talking to their actual mother about.” She becomes more than just someone who teaches the love of God. She wants to do an extension of what Jesus has done for her and show others love through her service. Additionally, According to The Odyssey, “[By volunteering], you are making a difference in the world” (Reeves). Darla makes a difference in many kids lives through everything she

Katie’s parents, teacher and essentially herself all make her question what service is really about by presenting her with conflicting messages. Throughout the play an emphasis of being a do-gooder and a high-achieving student is placed upon Katie. In the opening of the play Katie tells David that she does volunteer to prove that she is "a well-rounded, well-adjusted person of the world"(3). Katie’s parents also go on to say that it is really nice that she wants to help David out, but maybe she could help someone else out by volunteering at a soup kitchen. To the parents, it seemed as if they were only placing a high importance on the actual word volunteer showing up on Katie’s resume rather than the people she was actually helping in this volunteer work.
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Clara Barton could be regarded as a hero because she went into several military battles during the civil war with a strong mindset to help the soldiers who were wounded and to provide supplies that were needed but scarce17.She was a woman of many talents who accomplished a lot but became best known for the founding of the Red Cross in America. Her humanitarian contributions and compassionate personality allowed her to connect with many people. As inspiring as Clara Barton was, she wasn’t born a hero but became one with the influence of her younger years. Clara Barton’s family life and personal struggles when she was younger, ultimately shaped
cares for her family and community and tries to put them in their best light for her
Clara Barton is known for bringing the International Red Cross to America and creating the American Red Cross; however, she has done so much addition humanitarian work that few know about. She was revolutionary in the field of education, healthcare, and women’s suffrage. Clara was a great role model for people who cared about others. Her entire life revolved around others even though it wasn’t always easy. She rarely thought about what was right for her. She acted to help the greater good. She is an excellent example of how one person with an idea can make a huge impact in the world. Her actions and ideology continue to impact people today.
In the article Random kids 2010 it says, “ Talia Leman is the CEO and a Founder of RandomKid. She develops ideas, strategies and networks between kids internationally to increase their impact.” This shows me that Talia wants to impact others which shows she is a hero. In the article Random Kids 2010 Talia Leman it says, “ $11 million raised for causes around the world.” This shows she is a hero because she just didn’t raise $11 Million to just survivors of hurricane Katrina, she raised money for other bad causes in the world. Also in the same article Talia Leman - RandomKid it said, “At only 10 years old, Talia Leman already knew that she had the power to make a difference for vulnerable children.” This shows she is a hero because she knew she could make a difference, just like helping the survivors of Hurricane Katrina! These are reasons how Talia Leman is a hero all over the
One of the biggest influences she had growing up were her parents, a sixth grade teacher and a pharmaceutical salesman. Both her parents worked hard for the money they earned, which they taught their six children. Not only
Volunteering is productive. It also gives a satisfying feeling, knowing that one is helping people in need. Last year, in the process of getting confirmed in the Catholic Church, this writer preformed charity work such as serving food to homeless people at the Dorothy Day House. At first it seemed that doing charity work would be boring, but it was actually fun, helped people, and made a difference in their lives.

Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
Joseph Campbell says that “a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” In this quote, it says many things that I believe applies to Danielle Gletow. She puts children of all kinds on a higher pedestal than herself. She helps children reach maximum potential. Danielle Gletow has proven to be a hero by being influential to children in foster care, practicing what she preaches, and being passionate about helping kids have a normal life.
I learned about the importance of giving back at the age of 11yr old and putting the very important needs of others in front of my own. Volunteering in a homeless shelter at a young age opened my eyes. Where I was placed to give food, clothes, money & hygiene products to people in need. Where would I be right now without the help of God, my mother, family& friends and the church community”. Giving a helping hand to the people in the community is Something we should always do. In the ("bible Acts 20:35 says in everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the lord Jesus himself said: it is more blessed to give than to receive"). Having a compassionate heart for the community blesses the congregation.
Savannah Bukant is another great example of a teen who has made a difference. When Savannah was a senior in high school in Vancouver, Washington, she was troubled with the task of finishing a community experience project. Savannah had a love for orphans and she turned that love into a charity to help raise money for orphans in Ethiopia. The amount of money Savannah had to raised seemed almost impossible in...
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
The school that she teaches at engages families through a variety of activities and volunteer opportunities. The school has family nights, which include healthy cooking demonstrations, dance and exercise classes, and other family building activities. She also shared with me that in the school there are a lot of volunteering and field trips taken throughout the year that gets the students out in the community. However, one of the challenges families are encountering is that more families are having to have ...
