Thesis Daphne Bavelier is a brain scientist who is particularly concerned with how the brain works, and how to make it "smarter, better, faster, and stronger." Bavelier is currently involved in studying the effects of video games on the brain. In today's times, being a video game player is frowned upon, but Bavelier argues that we should leverage the power of the video game. We've already seen research that shows how video games can be extremely useful to help with several tasks needed to navigate the world, such as, driving a car or simply focusing on an activity. Video games allow us to enhance our abilities to track multiple items at a time, hence making video gamers better at generating decisions quicker, and react more hastily. Playing video games aids in rewiring the brain to maintain focus in situations where there is a lot of information that needs to be processed in a short period of time. Research is continually proving time and time again that action-packed video games are indeed making the brain work and respond to situations quicker. As Bavelier said in the video, we should work together and embrace the reality that video games are undeniably improving brain activity. If brain scientists, people who work in entertainment, and publishers come together and create a video game that could be used as medical therapy, the brain could be enhanced even more than with the games already being played. Video games do not make us more intelligent. They may however, make us more prone to violence and sex. Video games are preventing us from screening out distractions and making thinking deeply a difficult task. Our brains become overwhelmed when multitasking. Moreover, Johnson states “... a modern video game can take forty hours to complete”. Forty hours keep kids from homework and as Rachael Rettner states in livescience, “The results show that boys given a PlayStation II are slower to progress in their reading and writing skills and have more learning problems reported by their teachers than those not given a system”. The sole reason studies come back positive for video games being productive is due to the fact that they test a regular video gamer with a non-gamer. De Beauvoir explains, that individuals are able to obtain their own personal freedom using two separate factors. In regards to the first factor, De Beauvoir explains, “The individual must at last assume his subjectivity.” (De Beauvoir 16) What I believe De Beauvoir to be saying here is that individuals must be able to see themselves as an independent aspect of their world, something distinct from the other people as well as other things. This explains, in other words, that an individual must see himself or herself as a being, which holds their own personal agency. This individual must also recognize this idea, that they are their own individuals being in themselves.

The result found that the action gamers were twenty five percent quicker at creating choices than the individuals who were strategic gamers.
