The four year wait for the summer Olympics is finally over. The athletes and spectators are all ready to head to Brazil. The only thing that seems to be in the way is the recent outbreak of the zika virus. This virus seems to being running rampant throughout many of the South American countries including Brazil. The effects and spread of the virus is a concern for the athletes, spectators, and many others. The question raised by many is how to handle this situation with the Olympics only a few months away. The athletes have been training so hard over the last few years to get to this point and do not have any idea of the games will go on as scheduled. Also those who have made plans to go watch the Olympics now have to think and be cautious …show more content…
about a very serious virus when in Brazil. The host country is also at stake because of all the money they have spent to set up for the games and for all the renovations made throughout the country for the Olympics. The zika virus is really putting a dampened mood on the Olympics and could ruin this spectacular event. Although the zika virus is very serious and easily transferable, the summer Olympics should go on as planned because of the effort, time and money put in by all those involved with the games. The major selling point and focus of the Olympics revolves around the elite athletes competing in all different events. They have spent the last four years training to get them to the Olympics. They prepare themselves specifically for the environment in Brazil and for the time period which they will be down there. Changing one or both of those things can really throw an athlete off in the way they compete in that specific event. If the athletes are not up to their personal best it really takes away from the events. Competitive events are what people want to see and expect from these athletes. A track and field coach from England said “the time invested has been huge, from training six hours a day to traveling all the way to Brazil to train in the conditions. Changing the Olympics now would make all the work put in a waste of time.” This athletes seem to want to participate in the games as scheduled and since they are the main selling point, their opinion should be highly considered and followed. The next problem that will be avoided would be the issue of all the people who have made plans to travel to Brazil to see their country compete in the Olympic Games. Seeing the Olympics in person is a dream for many people because of how special the games are and the entire experience people get when they go and watch the Olympics. People have had the plans to travel to Brazil for a while now and changing plans last minute would really cause a major problem. They would have to cancel their flights, hotels, and anything else they booked for their trip. This could cause people to lose money from canceling flights at the last minute or would just cause the person a lot of stress that they must likely did not want to go through. Also for some people this could be the only time they could make the Olympics because of their jobs, illness, or other situations. Keeping the Olympics in Brazil this summer would make all the travel plans people made worth it. Planning for four years to go to Brazil would finally be a reality for those going. They get to represent their country at one of the greatest and most special sporting event in the world. What makes the Olympics so special is how it is every four years in August. Brazil has spent the last four years planning and putting together this spectacular event. The money that has been put into everything needed has been enormous. Everything has been scheduled and some items were rushed just so they were ready for the Olympics to happen in August. Representative for the Olympic Games said “postponing or moving the Olympics because of the zika virus is much harder than it sounds and in some ways would really finically hurt every party that is involved.” This is just one of probably many statements about the timing of the Olympics and changing it ever so slightly could be a huge loss in money. The Olympics and their organization needs to make money from the Olympics because they pay countries that compete in the games. They also help with building and security fees for the country. If they do not get enough money many people would be affected by thing because many of the places rely on the money that they get from the Olympics. Besides on putting on a spectacular show for the world to see, the finical burdens that are made really play apart in how the Olympics run. Considering the reasons why the Olympics should go on from an athletic and financial view part, the dangers of the zika virus still exist?
Some argue that postponing the Olympics is a good idea until the virus is under control. A postponement would bring much more stress and could bring more issues than the issues currently at hand. The endorsements and television rights that have been in place for over a year and now they would have to change everything around to fit the new date of the Olympics. The television times that were set for the networks now have to be changed and if they cannot change the network would lose millions of dollars and the rights for the Olympics. The endorsements from major companies are in question because many of have other duties to take care of. Many sponsors love the timing of the Olympics because it is in August when there is no other major event in the world are going on. If the Olympics were postponed it would then conflicts with company’s endorsements on other events they sponsor like the NFL, NBA or NHL just to name a few. It would really the companies which event to focus on and make them possible lose millions of …show more content…
dollars. Postponement would also bring problems for Brazil and the Olympic organizes because they have been planning for this date for the last four years. Once the Olympics ended in 2012 in London the focus immediately went to Brazil. Everything they have been planning is now a complete waste because of the postponement. They would now been put on the clock to get everything they originally had in place to be moved to the new date. This could cause a decline in the quality of the Olympics and the experience that will been seen by so many. Now postponement is not the only idea people have been throwing around. The next idea is moving the Olympics to a different country so the Olympics go on at the originally assigned date. Moving to a new country without zika does sound logical when first hearing it, but when people see the amount of time and effort doing this move would be extremely difficult. Most people find moving houses is difficult now think of those who would have to move one of the world’s biggest sporting events to a new country. The new country would also have to be willing to have the Olympics moved there. The country would have to spend millions to get ready and would have many issues that are currently Brazil’s problems put on them and probably more because there is a certain expectation for the Olympics and if it is not met the consequences can be very damaging. The moving to a new country would also be devastating to Brazil and everything they have done. Brazil has poured in millions of dollars and put financial strain because much of the money used has been hard to get and owe much of the money back. Now being told the Olympics is being moved could really destroy their economy. They have been hoping to make all the money back and even more. Moving the Olympics would make all the money put into the Brazil Olympics would be a complete waste and is something Brazil could not get back. A move to a new country would not cause major issues right away, but would get worse over time. Now with March just beginning the Olympics is only a few months away.
Instead of talking about the competition and how great it will be, people have been more concerned about the recent outbreak of zika and side effects it has. Many are showing concern and are calling for action because they want to feel safe when going to Brazil. Many options have been tossed around and considered. The most logical and best outcome would have the Olympics go on as scheduled. The results that would happen because of this would have the best outcome. The zika virus could be contained and controlled when people are there. People would just have to take precautions and everything can be controlled. Also pregnant woman should be the ones who should not go because of how it could affect their kid. All people have to do it put trust in the Olympic organizers because their first priority is the safety of all going to Brazil and if they still support the Olympics going on this summer in Brazil then everyone else should support their decision. It would just be up to every person to use every precaution that is available to them and everything will be just fine. Everyone should now just start thinking about the wonderful Olympic Games that are coming up because before people realize it they will be over and everyone will have to wait another four years for the next
one.
Brazil is bound to host in a two-year span the largest sport events in the World, The 2014 Soccer World Cup and The Olympic games in 2016. The country will attract a lot of investors looking for some brand exposure since the whole world will have their eyes turned to this tropical country. These events present opportunities for Brazil to benefit from tourism and prove to the world that it is ready to take its place as an important piece of global governance. Although Brazil has a flourishing economy, it still has many characteristics of a third world country. Social issues remain present in the country’s politics. There are several concerns regarding the capability of an emerging country to host events with that stature.
Every 4 years for a whole month international soccer gets to be in the spotlight. This year in 2014, Brazil is hosting the FIFA World Cup in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. But behind the aura of glory and pride in the hosting country, is also a group of angry Brazilians furious about the amount of spending that went into getting the stadiums ready. Despite the fame and recognition Brazil receives, hosting an expensive international soccer match for a month was a damaging decision for the country because it increased the amount of riots, the funding put into the stadiums were pricey, and the remembrance of the culture won’t last. Even before the start of the World Cup there were riots in the country on hosting the game and being against it.
It is not unusual for an athlete to have any sort of outbreak during the games (Riccobono). Authorities and health officials are taking this situation very seriously to protect athletes and spectators (Riccobono). All athletes and spectators should be taking smart measures to avoid mosquitoes during the games, like wear extra clothes, have bug repellent, and stay in mobile air conditioned places if possible (?Zika concerns mount?). It would be the only time in history that the Olympic Games have been changed due to health reasons. Rio?s mayor, Eduardo Paes states, ?this is not going to be an Olympics of wasting money.? The colder temperatures around the time of the Olympics should help mosquito population be at a lower risk. Officials are working on the psychological aspect of athletes being scared about the Zika virus (Romero and Ruiz). Federal troops are spraying for mosquitoes across the country (LaGrave).
Living in the world that consists of three thousand different types of mosquitoes is frightening. People got used to a daily routine of waking up and getting to their jobs, that many of them are so focused on their career and family that they do not even notice and pay much attention when they are getting bitten by mosquitoes. Unfortunately not many people were aware of the fact that not all insects are safe, many of mosquitoes transfer infections, but we were not concentrating on that since it was considered not a common issue. As a repercussion, people did not begin to react and notice that something wrong with them when Aedes mosquitoes began their attempt on ruining people’s social, physical and psychological lives by transferring a Zika virus to the once who are bitten.
In the past the Olympic games were used as a way for the Greeks to honor their gods. Today the games are not an honoring but more of a social gathering. What’s great about the games today is that everyone has equal opportunity to compete. No matter your gender, size, ethnicity, or wealth, all you have to do is work hard and
During 2013 WBC, Cuba’s baseball game had so many people watching and paying attention that it made everyone forget what was going on with the olympics (“Echevarria” para.6). In 2012 the summer olympics was held on July 27, while america is buzzing with cash for the next set of games to happen (“Echevarria” para. 1). Around, 2005 the (IOC) decided to take baseball and softball out of the olympic games and was saying that it would not be apart of the 2016 Olympics (“Ec...
There are currently 40 emerging infectious diseases, that are at risk of spreading from country to country, due to the increase of people traveling. Diseases like Ebola and the Zika virus pose a global threat due to the possible rapid rate of transmission from human-to-human, that occurs with exposure to someone who is symptomatic and seropositive (World Health Organization, 2016-a). When there is an infectious disease breakout, public health practitioners and physicians, must make quick decisions regarding isolation of a patient exhibiting symptoms and using quarantine for those who have been exposed to someone symptomatic or seropositive. Although, a public health framework is followed to make the decisions for isolation and
It was estimated that the Olympic Games 2012 would involve more than 11,000 athletes and officials, 1 million visitors from around the world, and 4 billion television audiences, or more. Therefore, it was important to ensure that the Games preparations were ready on time, delivered high standard sports facilities to the sports professionals while controlled spending within budget.
With over two hundred countries participating, the Olympic Games is easily considered as one of the largest multisport event known to history. The Olympics are held at a different country, and even more rarely at the same city. For a country to be chosen to host the Olympics, the country’s National Olympic Committee (the country’s representatives for the Olympics) nominates a city (from the country they represent) that they think has potential in hosting the Olympics nine years prior to when they wish to host the Olympics. It is a two year process that consists of: Application Phase, Candidate Phase and the Election of the Host City. The country that wins the election is given seven years to prepare for the Olympics. (International Olympic Committee, n.d., p. xx-xx) The hosting country expends billions of dollars, usually money they don’t have, preparing for the Olympics. Then the question is raised 'why would a country go through so much trouble and spend an outrageous amount of money to host this event?' Throughout this discussion paper it will address all the pros and cons for a country to host the Olympics. It will also see if a smaller sports event can produce the same benefits the Olympic offers with less cost and risk.
The organizer have been missing a great opportunity to celebrate their games and enjoy the festivities because masses of cheering fans and Olympics revelers would help present their country in the possible light, as the games are being televised to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 4 billion.
Thus, it creates some great moments. For example, when Andre De Grasse won silver in the hundred meter run this year all of Canada was cheering him on. Or for the Americans when they had the basketball “dream team” in 1992 all of America was cheering them on. Last but not least, when Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal, Canada was cheering with neighbors, friends, and family. These iconic moments came from professional athletes and will be in the sports books for decades. The athletes also need a sense of freedom so they can choose if they want to go to the Olympics or not. This will create an extra holiday for the athletes who do not go to the Olympics. Which is a good thing to get your legs back for the second half of the season. If the IOC did not let the athletes compete it would mean some of the greatest Olympic moments would have never happened, also there would be no extra break for they ones who do not go to the
The Olympics is a mega sport event which is presented once every four years and it has become a golden opportunity for hosts to emerge as a strong country. Hosting the Olympics is a big thing for every country and they receive worldwide attention from the preparation period until the actual event. However, hosting the Olympics comes with heavy stakes and experts tend to argue about the appropriateness for the countries to host it. There may be people who oppose with hosting the Olympics, however, the country rebranding, the economy hike and also the pride and patriotism of citizens just demonstrate the need of hosting the Olympics for the development of the country.
We prepare today, by cleaning the whole country/ town it is going to take place, by advertising the event and even building a new. airport, as they have done in Athens for the Olympics, which will be. happening in 2004. In the ancient Olympics the events were held in the same place each year so they didn't need to put in as much effort. we do in modern day.
Looking to the future, Rio 2016 Olympic Games will hold after two years, but some of the venues have not yet begun construction, infrastructure delays. One of the vice president of the IOC John Coates, feel dissatisfied about this, and also claimed this is "the worst" he has ever seen. Few days later, there are rumor that the Olympic Games will change to hold in London by Plan B. The IOC then denies this rumor.
If Brazil can take advantage of these strengths then they will be able to continue the growth they have been enjoying over recent years. The country have enough oil and gas reserves to make Brazil self-sustaining, with some to spare which can be sold abroad. Another strength Brazil have is the fact they actually have more fresh water than any other country in the world. As climate change will soon become to make water scarcer than ever before, and this will in turn make Brazil an extremely attractive prospect for people wanting to either invest or live there. The World Cup this summer was a tremendous success and this tournament, along with the build up to the Olympics that will take place in Brazil in 2016, has massively improved and is continually improving the basic physical and organisational infrastructure whilst attracting major international investors into the country. Hosting the Olympics isn’t generally a profitable investment due to the massive expenditures required throughout the tournament, however, the event like the World Cup, will give the country a massive global
