One example of an area or an activity that demonstrates African-American dance qualities is basketball. The movement for basketball shows qualities of street dancing. This can be seen when players shoot the ball and when players attempt to fake out the opposing side by spinning around in opposing directions. Double Dutch is another example of the demonstrates African-American dance qualities. While males would participate in sports, females would participate in Double Dutch. Double Dutch is shared among the young people and the elderly. The movements in Double Dutch went from just jumping rope to rhythmic movements, a quality shared with African-American dance.
One more example of an activity that shares qualities of African-American dance
is cheerleading. Cheerleaders blended different styles of dances in their routines, like street dancing and hip-hop dancing. Their attire is comfortable so they can fluently move around for multi-unit movements. Street performers on The Fremont Street Experience is another example. While I was working for Starbucks, my walk to work would involve walking across the Las Vegas Strip to my location that I worked that. I would typically identify different street performers who do hip-hop dancing, break dancing, and even ballet! There was obvious proof that they have thoroughly studied choreographies inspired by African-American dance whenever I spectate these performers. Overall, this course taught us about the history of African-American dance. For African-Americans, dance was their heart and soul. Dance helped raise their spirits while being slaves, helped them express their struggles and culture, and this feeling stuck with them even to today. Through the course of history, dance changed the way people examine African-Americans in a positive way. I have one friend, Kevin T., who knows choreographies to Korean music videos. After watching the type of dances he would perform while watching these music videos, I discovered that the pop stars he was imitating adapted multi-unit movements that can be said to be inspired by African dance. This is one of a myriad of example of how I apply what I learned from this course to real life situations.
“Who knows only his own generation remains always a child.” This quote from George Norlin echoes the edification that cultural exposure can offer. How does African dance relate to do modern dance? The two are so heterogeneous in their make-up that one would not think of them as having similarities. The truth, however, is that all dance forms are linked in some way or another; they all strengthen and sharpen each other. Modern dance has its roots in African dance with the emphasis placed on the connection of weight and gravity. Brenda Dixon Gottschild names five aesthetics that are present in African dance. Katherine Dunham, born on June 22, 1909 was an African American dancer. Her mother Fanny June Dunham died when she became sick and her father Albert Dunham Sr., left to work as a salesman. Dunham and her older brother Albert Jr., were raised by their loving aunt Lulu on the ghetto side of Chicago. At four years old, Dunham would go to the salon, her aunt’s workplace, and would always remember how much her mother loved music. “The Dancer’s gift” is a love story between a young man and woman, Marcel and Samantha. But this novel was written not only to call feelings about love and passion; the main goal was to introduce students to sociological concepts. Overall, the book includes more than 180 sociological terms that flow with the story and closely connected to happening events. Marcel, a black man, arrives from Martinique (an island in the Caribbean Sea), and Samantha, a rich American girl, meet each other in college and fall in love. Both of them face obstacles in their lives: Marcel was grown up in a poor extended but a friendly family, while Samantha was a daughter of rich but divorced parents. Marcel comes to the U.S. to become a professional dancer, while Sam decided to become an attorney at law just like her father. Being lovers they decide to spend their Christmas holidays together and go to New York. Next holidays they go to Marcel’s homeland, Martinique, where they realize that there lives a woman who is pregnant by him. At that time all dreams of Sam just collapse due to this bitter disappointment, which becomes one of the reasons why they break up. Throughout the story, they both meet with numerous social issues such as education, marriage, gender issue, racism, deviance, divorce, religion, race and ethnicity. Being a resident of South Carolina, African-American Culture was chosen as part of the applied learning project for the Intercultural Nursing class, because African-Americans make up more than a quarter of this state’s population. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, the total population for South Carolina (S.C.) is 4,625,364, with 27.9% being of African-American descent. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding and sensitivity to issues and cultural variances or phenomena that are unique to the African-American Culture. Another goal is to identify nursing interventions that are important for the nurse to consider in caring for this population. These phenomena’s include variances in social organization, communication, space, perception of time, environmental control, and biological variations associated with the African-American culture. Africanisms in America are a highly surveyed topic for the black community. Joseph E. Holloway describes Africanisms as “those elements of culture found in the New World that are traceable to an African origin” (Holloway 2). I believe, that africanisms are the traditions and cultural behaviors of African Americans that resemble the some of the same traditions and cultures in Africa. Which makes you ponder about what current elements does our culture use that ties back to Africa. Which in fact there are several africanisms that still exist. African Americans have retained an essence of Africa in their speech, hair care, clothing, preparation of foods, and music by over centuries of separation from the Dark Continent.
The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and artistic movement inspired by African American artists, writers and musicians. The movement demanded recognition of overwhelming talents in the arts, literature, and music. For the first time in history, African Americans earned status, respect, and credibility in a world powered by white. Black musicians brought the stylings of Jazz and blues, while writers and artists took to depicting “black problems” and ways of life. The practice, previously unknown to traditional Anglo literature, quickly became highly regarded in worlds that transcended skin color. Men and women who chose to engage in sports from which they would traditionally be discouraged because of their gender, particularly as professionals, redefine the sport. The social and cultural "costs" are not the result of the individual's participation, but rather the way in which sports have been socially, politically, and economically constructed. Gender is only one of the few ways in which people are categorized according to their proficiency for some athletic activities. Race and class are also factors which may prevent individuals from engaging in sports that have been traditionally excluded to them. Socially constructed notions of race, class, and sexuality compound the way in which the history of sports has developed. For example, black women athletes may be more accepted in certain sports than in others, i.e. black women in the WNBA might seem as less an anomaly for black women than for white women, and yet the success of the Williams sisters in tennis may seem more out of the ordinary for many Americans than the success of their white counterparts. Race, class, sex, and sexuality are the operative notions in which certain sports are less "traditional" for certain groups.
In the 1920s, many grand events were experienced by the population. A short time before the start of the Great Depression, this decade was one of prohibition, lavish parties, flappers; and also of the Great Migration. The Great Migration was a time period from 1917 to 1970, during which much of the African American population moved from the southern states, to more urbanized northern communities (Great Migration). While many relocated to the Detroit area because of the booming automotive industries like Ford, some moved to other metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Illinois, and New York City. The surge of the Great Migration helped to initiate what is now known as the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great accomplishments for the African American community; from music, to art and poetry, and even to dance. This era was also a time during which the birth of racial equality happened. The Savoy Ballroom, located in the heart of the Harlem district, was the birth place of the lindy-hop and the quintessential swing movement, thus making it a crucial part of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the progression of dance even to this day (Swinging at the Savoy). This
Hispanic American community are rooted from their origins in Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and other Spanish speaking countries that have come together and form a culture in the United State of America. The culture is built in different categories; for instance, religion, social custom, health practices their privacy, and birth. They come from a comprehensive familiar culture that has been called the second in America. Because of their pride and affection they feel unsafe to give up their past. Their notoriety in the United State has been their resistance to assimilate; their guarded image of Hispanic-American culture has been the tongue of flame. However, their remarkable legacy, Hispanics carry from Latin America is not their language, an inflatable skin, but breathe itself, capacity of soul, an inclination to live. The genius of Latin America is the habit synthesis. Their dance is colorful and beautiful. The dance is to keep in touch with their culture, pass down their culture heritage, and to unite people from different ethnicity who share their passion for dance. Through dancing, help in meditation, to promote health, and spiritual well being.
New Dance is described as a developing art form; this dance was articulated in the early 20th century. According to Chapter 8 in History of Dance book, “the new dance emerged as a response to the ballet that populated the variety shows and music halls, which had a rigid formula of steps and poses” (Kassing). The New Dance was a product of several strands that interlaced together dancers’ studies and backgrounds; these strands and others were woven together in a historical, political, and societal framework. For instance, one strand of New Dance consisted of the concepts, techniques, costumes, and stage settings from around the world. These strands influenced major dancers and choreographers, such as, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn.
This plays a huge role in how they are portrayed, especially when the two markets start to overlap. The influence of hip-hop on basketball starts to portray the caricatures and stereotypes of African American athletes and men that later affect the views given to youth in inner city America. This embodies the “American Dream” which keeps kids from focusing on their academics and portraying what it means to be black in America. This is done through hip-hop’s influence on sports through the political aspects of society that influences the rise of both hip-hop and sports in urban areas. Also the socioeconomic influences the people who are involved with these things. Their relationship is also characterized by the rise in both economies of the industries and how they have directly influence one another.
Traditions are practices/beliefs that are passed down from generation to generation. In traditional African societies, a kinship ties people through birth or marriage. There are two kinds of relationships in customary African tradition; those bound by blood, which are called consanguine, and those constructed by marriage, called affilial. There are four key descents that determine inheritance and marriage. However, the most common descent is patrilineal, which traces ancestry through one's father. While in America, we are vary tolerant of tracing our descent from both parents.
On April 24, 2014, I watched the specific dance “Against the Grain”, which is choreographed by Sofia Olga Carreras. This dance was performed by many dancers who were Jessica Adams, Nelly Camacho, Leanna Hamilton, Hollee Hennebelle, Heather Horn, Sara Loder, April Maclean, Julie Morris Tessier, Robyn O’Dell, Michaela O’Malley, Alicia Slaughter, and Tracy Tom-Honn. Even though it was a group dance, there still was a solo dancer who was Jessica Adams. The dance was performed in the RCC Performing Arts Center, and the Intersect Dance Theater Co. produced this dance. By watching this creative dance, I saw that the eccentric girl often did different movement from others; eventually, everybody left her, and she lived lonely.
