Guiding question: how was D-day planned
On June 6th 1944 it happened, D-day, a huge beach invasion, perhaps the largest in history, part of operation overlord, code name for battle of normandy. This was begining of a series of Attacks by allies which eventually lead to the battle of Berlin, which lead to the end of World War 2. This invasion that took 2 years to plan included operation fortitude a made up operation to trick the germans; a airborne mission to go behind enemy line and scatter the german defenses at the beach; then finally the beach invasion; the equipments also made a huge difference in saving soldiers live. This tragic victory with 209,000 allied casualty help end world war 2 at least a year in advance.

Therefore the Allies came up with a hoax: Operation Fortitude. The allies set up a huge amount of inflated tanks, landing crafts, and set empty camps. As the web site mtholyoke.edu said “A fake radio network was setup to simulate the traffic of an army preparing to invade.” (mtholyoke.edu) The plan worked and successfully tricked the germans to move all the main forces to Pas de Calais in France, where the attack was believed to set place. The plan worked so well that even after the day of the attack the main german force still haven’t been moved.
Equipment are also a huge aspect that affected D-day, since topic the equipments of all the countries would be too wide, the paragraph would be mainly focusing on U.S. paratroopers. The most commonly used weapon by are M1 garand
rifle, a paratrooper would carry up to 136 rounds, the M1 rifle was so effective because of its semi automatic firing, while other military rifles couldn’t do. Another commonly used weapon is the folding stock M1A1 carbine, it's a shorter version of a full length rifle, it's really lightweight and easy to carry. A web site informed that M1A1 carbine are usually issued to “radio men, forward observers, and vehicle drivers, as well as the soldiers who served on the multi-man teams operating mortars and Browning light machine guns” (http://www.wired.com/2012/06/d-day-paratrooper-gear-gadgets) The paratroopers also used Thomspson submachine gun, and M1911A1 Pistol. Wirecutters were also equipped by paratroopers so they could keep the their operation silence and go under barbed wire fences until they spot a hostile. another unexpected tool the paratroopers were given was cricket noise makers, a device invented for the orchestra leaders used to keep time for their players actually made a huge difference in keeping the paratroopers safe. Cricket noise makers were used to help identify friendly's since is was midnight when the paratroopers were dropped deep into enemy territory, it's really hard to identify enemy or friendly. How the cricket noise maker works is that, is the soldier spotted movement in front of them, they would make noise with the cricket noise maker, if they get a respond with the cricket noise maker, it means friendly, if not, they are clear to fire. On the night of June 5th 82nd and 101st airborne division were parachuted behind enemy line to the western section of the upcoming invasion. The men from 82nd were to land on Zones “DZ” with the 101st mens landing east of them. The Drop zone was surrounded with marsh regions which proves a challenge to the soldiers who will be their T.S. type parachute and about 40 kilograms of equipment (88 pounds). Throughout the airborne operation the gliders are greeted by heavy german fire from the ground, lots of plane were hit and crashed before the soldiers even had time to get out. Therefore lots of pilots disobeyed the order and switched the green light (a light inside the plane that give soldiers permission to jump) even before reaching the landing zone. As a result of the disorganization the lucky soldiers found themselves miles away from their mission, while the unlucky ones landing in the marsh and drowned in bodies of water even less than one meter high. On a website the quote of John Taylor, parachutist of the 101st Airborne Division, tells: “those which jumped of C-47 before me are drowned in a marsh, just like those which jumped after me. I landed on a fine strip of land of a few meters broad which crossed the marshes.” this infers that the paratroopers suffered heavy casualties because of tones of incidents like this, lots of soldiers were shot and even tortured after having their parachute tangled in trees and high structures. Aside from the heazy loses, lots of soldiers managed to move toward their objectives while regrouping and collecting lone soldiers on the way. Thanks to the Paratroopers the german force was scattered and moved from the beach, but even with that, the U.S. lost 2499 marines on the beach that day. The outcome would have been tragic if there was no paratrooper attacks or operation fortitude. D-day was so geniously planned that it tricked the Germen three time, all the Germen main forces stayed in Pas de Calais even after the day of D-day. The what surprised the Germans the most was the landing attack since the Airborne operation was huge, the Germans didn’t suspect another attack. Without the German forces scattered at the beach, there would have been a lot more casualties or even the possibility for the beach attack failing.
Germany knew that an allied invasion of France was imminent. For months, allied spies and intelligence sought to leverage the knowledge gained through the invasion of Sicily and against weaknesses in the German defense of France. General Eisenhower knew that an attack on the coast would not be sufficient to invade because Germany had reserve troops and escape routes. The 101st Airborne division’s task was to seize four causeway exits because it was expected that VII Corps would have difficulty moving inland. The 101st and the 82nd were to jump in 5 hours before the landings on Omaha and Utah beach. The Pathfinders mission was crafted thr...
The Battle of Pearl Harbor was one of the most atrocious events that happened in U.S. history. On December 7, 1941, Japan made a surprise aerial attack on the United States naval base and airfields at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than two thousand Americans died and a thousand two hundred were wounded. Eighteen ships were badly damaged, including five battleships. The next day, President Franklin Roosevelt with the support of the Congress, declared war on Japan. It led United States’ official involvement in World War II. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because of a deteriorating relationship with the U. S. The “New World Order”, expansion and resources, and economic sanctions were factors that conducted to another disaster on the Second World War.
The 1944 Allied landing at Normandy met a strong, networked German defense that initially disrupted the timing of the invasion, slowed down the Allied advance, and inflicted extensive casualties. The German shore defenses were a result of extensive preparations that began when the German High Command appointed Field Marshal Rommel to defend the western European coast. Rommel believed the best strategy against an Allied inv...
The Battle of Britain as a Turning Point in the Defeat of German in World War Two
D-Day, one of the most important days during World War II, was a pivotal moment that changed an entire continent. Despite the name, D-Day did not occur in just one day, but rather over several days. It was a code name for the start of Operation Overlord. D-Day is well-known for marking the beginning of the end of the war in Europe and Hitler's rule over much of the continent. Many historians believe that without D-Day, Europe would have fallen to Hitler.
The prelude to the Battle of the Bulge began on a winter day in mid-December of 1944. Three powerful German divisions, were the last German offensives in the west at that time during World War II. They began after the Normandy invasion in June 1944. Allied had forces swept rapidly through France but became stalled along the German border earlier that year in September. On December 16, 1944 taking advantage of the weather, which kept the Allied aircraft on the ground, the Germans launched a counteroffensive through the semi-mountainous and heavily-forested Ardennes region in Germany, and advanced 31 miles into Belgium and northern Luxembourg near the Meuse River. Their goal was to trap four allied armies, divide the Americans and the British to force negotiated peace along the western front, and retake the vital seaport of Antwerp in Belgium. Thinking the Ardennes was the least likely spot for a German offensive, American staff commander chose to keep the thin line, so that manpower might concentrate on offensives north and south of the Ardennes known as the "bulge" in the Allied lines. These American lines were thinly held by three divisions in the Allied Army and part of a forth division, while fifth division was making a local attack and the sixth division was in reserve. Division sectors were more than double the width of normal defensive fronts, therefore there were more men scattered along a larger area. The German advance was halted near the Meuse River in late December. Even though the German Offensive achieved total surprise, nowhere did the American troops give ground without a fight. Within three days, the determined American stand and the arrival of powerful reinforcements insured that the ambitious German goal was far beyond reach. In snow and sub-freezing temperatures the Germans fell short of their interim objective- to reach the rambling Meuse River on the edge of the Ardennes. But they managed to avoid being cut off by an Allied Pincer movement.
“The Battle of the Bulge, fought over the winter months of 1944 – 1945, was the last major Nazi offensive against the Allies in World War Two. The battle was a last ditch attempt by Hitler to split the Allies in two in their drive towards Germany and destroy their ability to supply themselves” (Trueman).

Weapons and Artillery of World War II The result of World War II was affected by many different factors. One major factor which affected the war was the weapons and artillery used during the war. Since the beginnings of time, weapons have always been around. From swords and knives to nuclear weapons and missiles, weapons have evolved greatly over the years.

August 6, 1945 the day the world would change forever, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. I believe that this bomb was absolutely necessary to end the Second World War because if the bomb had not been dropped many more lives would have died. Before the bomb had been dropped 36 million men had already been killed in the Pacific War and the Japanese used the Samurai fighting technique. This mindset is that one will go out to fight and die for their country, dying in war was honor these men did not come home and if captured they killed themselves. Our US soldiers were not made for that and our government was not going to send them into a suicide mission.
In late 1944, following the successful D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, it seemed that the Second World War was all but over for the Allied forces. On Dec 16, with the winter in site, the German forces launched a counteroffensive that was meant to sway the war into Hitler’s favor. The battle that shortly ensued after this counteroffensive is historically known as the Battle of The Bulge. The Battle of The Bulge initially started with the American forces being outnumbered 250,000 German troops to a mere 80,000 Americans. During this time the American Soldier’s fortitude and character were tested against ultimate adversity.
Hitler then ordered the attack on Belgium, Holland and France. The British and French had predicted that the German attack would come through Belgium. So the British and French forces moved north into Belgium to meet the German advance. The Germans again used overpowering blitzkrieg tactics and quickly overwhelmed Holland. The main German attack began further to the south, as...
Pearl Harbor was a very vicious attack by the Japanese on the US. On December 7, 1941 US Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese fighter jets. United States had been aware of a possible attack since the 1920s; the US became more involved when the Japanese invaded Manchuria. Attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of something big, a bloody war between the Japanese and the United States. United States was not expecting such an event; it was such an unannounced attack on the naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. That unexpected attack on December 7, 1941 was originally just a preventive effort for keeping the US from interfering with military action the Empire of Japan was planning in Southeast Asia. Japan wanted to cripple the pacific fleet so they wouldn’t foil their plan to create a defense perimeter in the Southwest Pacific. Japanese aircraft launched two aerial attack waves sinking four US Navy battleships and damaging two other battleships. The attacks also led to a high number of deaths. There original plan was to attack all of the US aircraft carriers. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in US entry into World War 2.
On the 29th august, Von Cluck (German general) changed the plan, so that they didn't attack Paris as planned, instead they went east and sent more troops to attack the forts.
