Good leadership is a quality many do not have possession of. To become a great leader, one must not only teach and train the ways of how one should live, but should also connect to people on a deeper level. The leader must understand people, so that he can rule over the people with heart and passion out of love and not in condemnation or lust for power. Leadership is not always a learned skill; some are just born with this natural ability. Cyrus was born to lead. He learned at an early age how to act in a righteous manner. Cyrus learned the skills and characteristics of a good gentleman that soon lead him to becoming one of the greatest leaders of all times. As a young boy and young man, he was taught several ways in how he must present himself and the behaviors he must fulfill. “The boys are instructed in temperance and self-restraint... They were taught to obey their rulers.” (Pg. 3) Cyrus, along with many other young boys like him, had to practice activities that challenged their true character. For example, the young lads had to sleep outside to not only protect the city, but to practice self-restraint. Also, the boys had to go hunting with the king, so that they could learn the customs of early rising, how to deal with the heat and cold, and above all, to train their spirits to be sharpened by encountering the great and mighty beasts that roamed the …show more content…

He knew how to connect with them and therefore, they not only respected him, they had desires to please him. “Not one of them dared lift hand against him. And yet he was able, at the same time, to inspire them all with so deep a desire to please him and win his favour that all they asked was to be guided by his judgment and his alone” (Pg. 2). Cyrus had knowledge in how he should rule his people he conquered and gained much wisdom from his father. His father gave advice to him that no other could. His father knew what made a great leader and wanted to pass his noble knowledge he had learned from being a king and leader himself, to his son. “The ruler should only differ from his subjects by the splendour of his banquets, the wealth of gold in his coffers, the length and depth of his slumbers, and his freedom from trouble and pain. But my views are different: I hold that ruler should be marked out from other men, not by taking easily, but by his forethought and his wisdom and his eagerness for work” (Pg.18).
