Social media bullying is an ethical issue and moral evil that has taken over the lives of young people. It is also known as cyberbullying and is the use of technology to bully a person or group with the intent to hurt them socially, psychologically or even physically (eSafety, 2018). This essay will explore this issue in more depth while touching on how sin, determinism and informed conscience influences people involved with cyberbullying. This will be explained by using the Bible, Catholic Social teachings and will then draw conclusions about the significance of Catholic Teachings on social media bullying.

However, it enables people to be morally evil and cause suffering. According to the BBC, two studies conducted involving 700 students found that social media bullying causes depressive symptoms, worthlessness, hopelessness and low moods/feelings (BBC, 2018). The feeling of worthlessness and hopelessness causes them to withdraw from reality. This causes not only the victims suffer, but also the family. A verse from Matthew 5:11 states: Blessed are you when others revile you, persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. This means that all though others are saying utterly horrible things towards you, you’re blessed by God. Another verse that mentions bullying is Mark 7:20: He went on, “What comes out of a person’s mouth is what defiles them”. This means that what people say, is what you are. It isn’t what others think of you, it is what they think of themselves. As well as the Bible, the Catechism has a strong view on social media bullying too.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church outlines their view of social media bullying through countless passages. Catechism 2507 states: Respect for the reputation and honour of persons forbids all detraction and calumny in word or attitude. This correlates with the topic of social media bullying because it depicts that for us to have respect for the reputation and honour of our peers, then we can’t say anything against them to ruin them. If one was to do so, it would mean that they do not have respect for that person. Therefore, the catechism passages encourage Catholics to make good, informed conscience
