Everyday cyberbullies roam the internet with no fear of prosecution. This must stop. Many critics have stated that cyberbullying is harmless and has no effect on internet users, however, cyberbullying promotes depression causing acts of self violence, it initiates social problems, and with the Prevention Act being passed the chances that cyberbullying will stop increases.
Initially, speaking to someone as if he is unimportant can greatly impact the emotional health of a person. Many critics over look the fact that cyberbullying can cause feelings of depression. "In 2008, Lori Drew was convicted of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act after creating a fake Myspace account. Assuming the fake identity of a boy, Drew used the account to flirt with, and then later break up with Megan Meir." As stated in "The Dangers of Cyberbullying". From this, one can infer that the event created trust issues for Megan and only one thing can be done about that, someone is punished. Later the case was taken to court and Lori Drew got away with a small charge. If the Prevention Act was passed, Lori would have been given a greater charge for her cruel actions. Not only can fraud impact someone's social problems, as explained in the "Ophelia Project", forwarding rumors and gossip through text messages or emails is a form of bullying. This can lead to broken friendships and can create future problems for making friends. When a victim is bullied by someone special to them this can break the trust between the people involved, and it can also create future problems of creating new friendships because there will always be that part of him that has been betrayed and nothing can ever make up for that.
