Everyday cyberbullies roam the internet with no fear of prosecution. This must stop. Many critics have stated that cyberbullying is harmless and has no effect on internet users, however, cyberbullying promotes depression causing acts of self violence, it initiates social problems, and with the Prevention Act being passed the chances that cyberbullying will stop increases.
Initially, speaking to someone as if he is unimportant can greatly impact the emotional health of a person. Many critics over look the fact that cyberbullying can cause feelings of depression. "In 2008, Lori Drew was convicted of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act after creating a fake Myspace account. Assuming the fake identity of a boy, Drew used the account to flirt with, and then later break up with Megan Meir." As stated in "The Dangers of Cyberbullying". From this, one can infer that the event created trust issues for Megan and only one thing can be done about that, someone is punished. Later the case was taken to court and Lori Drew got away with a small charge. If the Prevention Act was passed, Lori would have been given a greater charge for her cruel actions. Not only can fraud impact someone's social problems, as explained in the "Ophelia Project", forwarding rumors and gossip through text messages or emails is a form of bullying. This can lead to broken friendships and can create future problems for making friends. When a victim is bullied by someone special to them this can break the trust between the people involved, and it can also create future problems of creating new friendships because there will always be that part of him that has been betrayed and nothing can ever make up for that. Individuals who say cruel things online could make the victim have a lower self esteem. Having a low self esteem means that the victim thinks poorly of their self and doesn’t want to be their self. Having low self esteem could lead to depression. Depression can really have a bad effect on the victim. According to “The Ophelia Project” , “60% of targets said that their online experiences as a target of cyberbullying affected them at school, home, and with friends, reported experiencing feeling of frustration, anger and sadness.” Victims feel frustrated that these people are making fun of them online which can cause them to be sad that this is happening to them and angry that they won’t do anything about their situation. The victim could also have a lower self concept of their self and just start hating their self to where they don’t even want to look in mirror at their self. Victims who have gone through this should know that the person who said rude things to them will be prosecuted for what they’ve

According to Hinduja and Patchin, “There is no shortage of potential offenders or victims of cyberbullying because of the widespread availability of computers and the Internet in the developed world,” (Hinduja and Patchin, 132). Both the writers make a good point stating this fact. With the amount of technology that is available to students, on different devises, has allowed them to freely communicate. “Always stand up for what you believe in, even if it means standing alone.” -Kim Hanks. This quote hints that it is okay to challenge something one may believe in, which is shown in these short stories. In “The Limited” by Sherman Alexie and “Deportation at Breakfast” by Larry Fondation, the theme of taking a stand is emphasized. In “The Limited”, a boy is taking a ride in his car, when he sees an older man swerve, purposely trying to hit a stray dog. Then, in “Deportation at Breakfast”, a boy dines at a restaurant, later resulting with the only employee in the restaurant to being arrested. The theme later appears in both of these short stories.
