The Australian film ‘Jasper Jones’ directed by Rachel Perkins demonstrates the rising issues that occurred in outback Australia in the 1960s, such as racism, prejudice, sexual abuse and bullying. During the 60’s the Vietnam War was in full swing with Australia sending troops to fight. Within the small mining town Corrigan cultures were divided as the Vietnamese Lu family endured frequent verbal and occasional physical abuse. Sexual abuse and infidelity is displayed through Laura Wishart’s disappearance and enhanced by the filming techniques and music. Racism and prejudice are evident throughout the film as on many occasions a preconceived opinion is made about a person which is not based on reason or actual experience. In today’s society, cyberbullying is the most common form of victimisation, as it allows for a person electronically communicate and hide behind a screen. Bullying can have serious short and long term effects such as depression, drug abuse, suicide and many other life threatening disorders. Verbal bullying can often be referred to as a ‘joke’ or ‘banter’ and the victim can often find this confusing as these jokes can affect their wellbeing, which can make it difficult to deal with the bully. Research shows that walking away, standing up to the bully or reporting to someone you trust will make a change to the situation (beyond blue). Cyber bulling is a far greater issue as you can connect with anyone online. To address this issue, firstly, responding or retaliating often empowers the bully as they are expecting your reaction, therefore, it is better to not respond and save the evidence. Bullying is different for everyone, people can feel powerless and miserable, therefore, talking to an adult, teacher or a trusted friend is important to get support and who may assist in reporting the bully. Once the bully has been reported it good to take time to focus on yourself and keep a diary so emotions aren’t bottled up
