Lara Kelly was a victim to cyberbullying. Many middle and high schoolers hear all the time about cyberbullying and not to do it, but the book Backlash really puts the issue into a harsh perspective for its readers. Sarah Darer Littman has written many books including Backlash, which deals with a lot of issues we face today. Backlash starts off with one of the major characters, Sydney. She is waiting for her sister, Lara, to be out of the bathroom so she can shower when she realizes Lara has taken a lot longer than she should and opens the bathroom door to find her passed out with a major amount of pill bottles around her. Bullying is a very prevalent issue in today’s society and Backlash is shown in multiple ways. A main instance of bullyinging in the book is expectations Breanna’s mom had of her and then bullied her into following them. When asked about creating Christian DeWitt’s profile by the police Bree was told by her mother not to tell the police anything about it she decided to go against her mother’s wishes. Her mother’s response when finding out Bree didn’t do what she wanted her to, “‘Can’t I trust you to do anything right, Breanna?’ Mom says in a voice as cold as her anger is hot, completely unmoved by my tears. I’m used to disappointing my mother. It feels like I’ve done it all my life. And I realize in that moment that maybe I am as stupid as she always tells me. Because deep down, I’d had this small shred of hope, some sick deluded fantasy, that she’d say I did the right thing by telling the truth” (). This is a horrible example what a mother should. First to tell her daughter to lie to the police is a horrible thing to show your kids is okay. Secondly, to shame her daughter into thinking doing the right thing is a bad thing is even worse. Lastly, what the worst thing is Bree’s mom actually bullied her. Telling her she can never do anything right and said it so much the result being, Bree actually believing herself when she started telling herself that. Bullying is also shown in the context of cyberbullying in Sarah Darer Littman’s book Backlash. There is an obvious example of this and that is when Christian DeWitt, Bree acting as him, completely rejects Lara and Christian(Bree) says very hurtful things about her. This is a horrible incident that unfortunately happens a lot in today’s society. I don’t think people realize how much their words and actions can hurt others, and this is shown throughout the entire novel. The first page of the book starts off with a post from a website called gRaCeFULLY. This website is completely dedicating to gossiping about all the drama that is going on in the school. The things posted are directed at specific individuals and are very hurtful: “Word is that [she] is ready and willing. Oh wait, sorry, that’s OLD news. She’s already screwed half the varsity lettermen” (McCreight 84). Although not every school has a website like this, it shows that every school is affected by some form of bullying. Also, Amelia’s best friend, Sylvia, is rude and says hurtful things to Amelia all the time. Amelia isn’t too bothered by these comments, and defends her actions by saying, “She did it when she felt like you’d hurt her feelings first…I tried to overlook the stuff she said…because I actually think she was jealous” (McCreight 29). Throughout the entire novel bullying is shown and I think Kimberly McCreight did that on purpose to show how much of a problem this is today in society. Most acts of bullying are dealt with, but not always in the correct way of doing so. Bullying Policies in many schools state that bullying is not tolerated and has consequences that will be used if bullying occurs. However, Jodi draws our attention to the issue that not all schools have a policy that states the consequences of bullying and practically just tells the victim to fight back and stand up for himself. This generally makes things worse for the victim by allowing the bully think that the victim is trying to "embarrass" the bully. With repeated attacks on one, it will have him/her believe they are either "useless" or think that they have to do something to prevent the next attacks, and this may not always be pretty or the "right" way. Bullying can be provoked by a difference in race, sexuality, or a conflict within a relationship; such as a rumor. There are a variety of reasons as to why someone could and is being bullied, however those few seem to be the main source. In some cases, being bullied can be caused by the fact that a person is simply intimidated by how well you fulfill an aspects of life in which they wish to be equally successful, if not better than you. Whatever the reason may be, the forms in which to be bullied all share equal impacts and severity. Receiving physical harm, verbal abuse, or intimidation or humiliation through the internet are all forms of bullying. The pain a victim sometimes receives is severe, resulting in high anxiety, stress, eating disorders, suicide, violent retaliations: “When teens intimidate each other, they may attack with bats, knives, guns, or other weapons” (Kowalski 1). Bullying can even result in eating disorders: “Many teens with eating disorders have suffered abuse. Unconsciously, they try to control one tiny portion of their lives-eating-when everything else seems out of control” (Kowalski 2).

The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Free speech is both a universal and national liberty. The United Nations and the United States of America believe that free speech is something that humans should be allowed to exercise. However, each respective group has their own limitations. These limitation, although broad, protect against free speech being taken too far. Like any liberty or privilege there must be a line in the sand to keep extremists from aggressively using and abusing this right. The United Nations formed "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights." With in this declaration are 40 articles with a preamble examining the rights which they believe are basic and necessary. Article 19 from this declaration says, "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."
Bullying is an issue that is a problem in society today. Bullying is any kind of unwanted behavior to an individual on repeated occasions which is a display of power over someone. Bullying is mainly common among students in school, and unfortunately, it happens in other places like at home between parents and children, and on rare occasions, among adults. When people began to identify bullying for what it is, it was only known as a physical aggression towards others, but over the course of time, bullying has moved from just physical bullying to verbal bullying, and power abuse in the workplace between co-workers in different ranks. Victims of bullying will eventually show the effects of bullying by being passive or secluding themselves from other individuals. The background or culture of a victim will most likely determine how they progress or react in a bullying experience. All around the United States, the prevalence of cyberbullying ranges from 10-40% of people who get bullied through electronics. Furthermore, this is a problem caused by kids, teens, and adults who target one another online by repeating harmful threats and harassments. This conflict negatively impacts the victims’ life which is why anyone who cyberbullies should pay the consequences and be prosecuted.

Bullies appear scary but truthfully they are the unhappy ones. Majority of bullies have been bullied by parents, siblings, or other young people. This may trigger them to bully and pick on other kids.
