Cyberbullying Controversy

With the world of ever growing social networking, it is believable that mobile contrivances and internet companies are skyrocketing in their sales and productions of their appliances. However, with technology, comes great responsibility. Recent studies show that more than 80% of teenagers utilize a cell phone, and over 50% have reported experiencing cyber bullying (http://nobullying.com/cyber-bullying-statistics-2014/). While some believe cyber bullying is in fact a solemn quandary, even worse than physical bullying, others believe that cyber bullying does not exist and is simply a weakness in a person’s noetic health. The controversies between these two subjects will always subsist, never answering the essential question; is cyber bullying

worse than traditional bullying?
The controversy between these two subjects are both very valid facts.

Yes, bullying is bullying, no matter what form it is in, but the caliber of severity differ astronomically between the two. After many discussions and arguments between the two sides, many people commence to visually perceive that the differences in these two forms of harassment lay rigorously on the consequences ofthe victim. The causes of both follow the same rubric; to make the assaulter feel higher about themselves. Although this is human nature, we are edified to tone down and contain our harsh behaviors about others. With traditional bullying, mostly physical pain will be inflicted upon the victim, but with cyber bullying, emotional pain is beat down upon the targeted. Of course, both forms of this can cause solemn damage to whoever it is transpiring to, but many people disagree as to which causes more earnest problems and which one is

“real”.
Traditional bullying is in fact a serious problem all around the world. It is said that an average 2.1 million bullies lie in American schools (Orange Ville CUSD). Bullying can range between verbal, physical, racial, sexual, or prejudicial aspects. Contrary to many notions, the verbal expression “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” may be true in some ways, but incorrect in other ways. Words may hurt anyone, depending on what type of person they are. However, the exchange of verbally abusive words does not exist strictly in the aspect of “Old School” bullying, but can lie in cyber bullying as well. While traditional bullying can cause broken bones, bruises, bloody noses, and black eyes, words will never cause any type of physical abuse towards you other than the kind you may inflict on yourself. Thus being why the question between the two lay unanswered.
On the other side of this valid argument sits our next point, is cyber bullying inferior?

While traditional bullying leads to physical pain, cyber bullying strictly lies within the mental aspect of the victim’s brain. Although the victim never receives direct bullying or abuse, cyber bullying can cause suicide, depression, and other forms of earnest mental disorders, thus being why so many believe cyber bullying is much worse than any other form. Of course, these days, almost anything can drive somebody to suicide or depression, which is why people believe that cyber bullying should not be considered a “problem”. Most problems lie stringently in the sensitivity level of the person who is being bullied. In our ever growing country that never seems to sleep, it isn’t uncommon for teenagers to experience more bullying online than in the school hallways. With traditional bullying, children may come home with bruises, scars, ripped clothes, and tear stained cheeks, but with cyber bullying, the signs are becoming less and less

prominent.
Overall traditional bullying and cyberbullying are different in some ways, but similar in more ways than you may think. Both subsist for the same reason; to make the attacker feel better about themselves. Although both have different consequences, physical bullying and cyber bullying can both cause problems that will go on perpetually, no matter what we try and do about them. Although many believe that the idea behind cyberbullying is purely an absence of strength mentally, that may be true in some ways. By the concept of human nature we are taught that selfishness is our main deravitive and that the only way to make your way to the top is to bring people down in the process. By many debates and arguments, we are still unable to find a correct answer for this problem due to the answers that vary throughout. This leaves you to answer the question. Which do you believe is more severe? Typical bullying or cyber bullying?
