The changing definitions of diversity affected healthcare management through opening the window of hiring all employees of different nationalities, gender and educational status. In the past it was a cliché of men being physicians and women playing the role of nurses. That cliché has phased out and now there are just as many female physicians and male nurses along with many from different cultural backgrounds. In order to upgrade my organizations cultural competency in a highly diverse workforce would be to do team building and as mentioned before open an opportunity to develop different procedures that could enhance the organizations care procedures and patient interactions. For example, if the organization sees a higher patient flow of those who practice holistic medicine and we have some staff that believe and practice this type of medicine we can develop a division or system to offer this type of care for those who seek it. This would bring a higher patient flow of those who practice holistic medicine while giving the patients comfort that they don’t have to settle for other types of care if it is a cultural aspect of their life. “Diversity within healthcare implies that there are patients and healthcare workers with different characteristics and from different backgrounds (Lloyd, 2008).
