1. The need for cultural health studies in this country is to help individuals in the health care field to be more aware of their patient’s culture and being able to understand their forms of medication and illness.
2. The rights that humans have, in the healthcare field , regardless of their status in the country is that they have the right to expect that the health care will respect their beliefs, values, and practices.
3. The benefits associated with providing culturally competent care is that patients are able to continue with their own personal beliefs, and values; not having the fear of being rejected in the health field or in any field.

The thing that surprised me the most when I read about the US Census and population data was the description about each group. I believed when a person talked about a certain race such as white, I never image that it also includes individuals that are Irish, German and much more.
5. To me, culture is what defines a certain race. Culture is a way to show one another their beliefs and values from their original homeland. Being able to bring a part of home, and also being able to share their stories.
6. My Parents had the most influence in teaching me cultural values and practices. I grew up in a household to always have an open mind when regarding other cultural values. My parents always showed me that having a different value in style, food, or any other value was not a negative situation, it was an opportunity to learn from others. Being able to see their point of view through their eyes.

Douglas, Rosenkoetter, Pacquiao, Callister, Hattar-Pollara, Lauderdale, Milstead, Nardi, & Purnell (2014) outline ten guidelines for implementing culturally competent care; knowledge of cultures, education and training in culturally competent care, critical reflection, cross-cultural communication, culturally competent practice, cultural competence in health care systems and organizations, patient advocacy and empowerment, multicultural workforce, cross-cultural leadership, and evidence-based practice and research. One specific suggestion I will incorporate is to engage in critical reflection. This is mentioned both by Douglas, et al. (2014) and Trentham, et al. Introduction Cultural Competency is fundamentally linked to the principles of social justice and human rights because it provides the nurses with the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills to provide equal care despite one’s cultural background. However, using the principles of social justice and human rights to educate nurses allows them to learn how to negotiate cultural differences. Cultural competence can be defined as using the ability of one’s awareness, attitude, knowledge and skill to effectively interact with a patient’s many cultural differences. Madeline Leininger, a pioneer on transcultural nursing describes it this way; “a formal area of study and practice focused on comparative human-care differences and similarities of the beliefs, values and patterned lifeways of cultures to provide culturally congruent, meaningful, and beneficial health care to people” (Barker, 2009, p. 498). The importance of cultural diversity in healthcare allows for the delivery of appropriate cultural autonomy. Showing respect for others will lead to trust between nurse and patient which in turn improves healing and health.
In the clinical setting, nurses are believed to spend the most time with patients.
