Cultural Communication Between American Children

Each country possesses a unique culture with different beliefs, values, norms and social practices. Hall (1976) mentioned that the high context communication styles are practiced in the Asian cultures such as Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc. which is very different from low ones of the American cultures. To put it in another word, in communication, while the American people tend to be open, direct, attentive and informal, the Asian residents are known to be close, indirect, sensitive and formal. In this essay, the way of communication between parents and their children in the US and Korea will be compared and contrasted by analysing and evaluating the cultural norm manifested in two movies - Home Alone 4 and Reply 1997. In the American parents’ notion, they regard their children as a friend or grown-up people in children’s form whom they are always willing to share everything about their life like triumph and joyousness or even deadlock and melancholic. A typical instance to demonstrate this point is for American parents-children relationship, they have no honorific word at all; they just simply call their name in sharing things occurring in their life. Additionally, the American parents teach their children how to respect other people’s opinion by appreciating their children’s notion first. The children, as a result, will follow the parents’ example and treat other people like their parents have treated them. Parents are not only willing to share but also willing to listen to their children’s opinion, suggestion, recommendation. Extracted from Home Alone 4, the scene which Kevin’s father and he share their observation about life expresses the norm clarified in the previous sentences with the highest level of clarity. They give each other the encouragement to handle all the unexpected challenges in their life. Kevin’s father said “You are probably right” when Kevin give his father an advice on his relationship. After that, the father takes his time to meditate his son’s sayings before. On the other hand, the plot of episode 9 of Reply 1997 is totally antagonistic with the circumstance of Kevin and his father. When Shi-won talks with her parents, she has to add honorific words and expresses her ideas clearly. Nevertheless, most of the time, those ideas have mostly been denied considering by her father. In episode 9, for instance, when her father has problems with the football team which he is coaching, she tries to talk to him respectably and patiently.
