Nowadays, the world is getting more culturally diverse. However, people seem to be very protective over their own cultural identity while living in a multicultural context. Sun-Kyung Yi said, “My parents were ecstatic at the thought of their daughter finally finding her roots and having a working opportunity to speak my native tongue and absorb the culture” (Yi, 1992). There are benefits and challenges that come along when living in a multicultural society. Therefore, these challenges have become very dominant over the immigrant children. Children living in two different cultures may find it very difficult by trying to please their parents at home while trying the please the outside world as well. Children living in two different cultures have problems finding their roots or have no sense of where do they really belong. Some children struggle to find a sense of belonging where usually they might find some people asking them where they come from, and this question make some of them really frustrated. These children sometimes can’t understand who they really are. It seems like they are doubled or playing a two faces game. Sun-Kyung Yi, in “An Immigrant’s Split Personality” said that after 16 years living in Canada, she finally discovered that it is difficult to be both Korean and Canadian depending who she is with. Furthermore, Sun-Kyung sais that she was known as Angela to the outside world but Sun-Kyung at home (Yi, 1992). Another big challenge that children may face is when they are trying to integrate themselves in a new culture. It is understandable that some children are able to integrate themselves quicker than others depending on the inequality between home and the outside cultures are. Immigrant children suffer from lack of support from school personal, such as teachers who sometimes do not have enough patience to help these children. (Carnock, 2016). As a result, these children being labeled by learning disability, instead looking at what the real problem is. These children have to deal with a new language and a new culture, which make them unable to succeed in school. Immigrant children who live in two cultures have not only been discriminated by not able to communicate their thoughts to their teachers but also have to deal with peers’ racial slurs. Moreover, when a child receives a negative feedback about himself, it brings that child self-esteem so low. As a result, low self-esteem can lead to depression, isolation and even suicidal. As we grow up one of the most important things we wish to discover is who we are as a person. Thus our understanding of our identity is vital in order to find our place in the world and is emphasised significantly in or modern culture. However trying to discover your sense of self can be a difficult time for any adolescence. Yet it can become even more complicated and stressful when you have to compete with drastically different cultural expectations. This is apparent in the children born to Asian Migrants in Australia; Author Alice Pung makes this abundantly clear in her memoir Unpolished Gem. This essay will explore how Pung has incorporated her struggle not only for own identity, but the strain of having to juggle the cultural expectations of her Asian family that she was raised with and the Australian culture she must live in, into her story.
She clearly and logically illustrates her point of view. She writes, “cultural differences are assumed and expected. But when the cultures of individuals are under scrutiny, it becomes clear that cultural borders do not hold their dividing power.” (98) Combined with her ability to logically expound on her view of cultural borders, she uses several anecdotes to further her point. She identifies four individuals who exemplify multiculturalism. Each of these examples share a Korean heritage but have adopted many other cultural markers from additional sources including non-Korean parents, U.S. society, immigration, and through adoption. Chang poses the question, “Would it be possible for one to become culturally more Korean in the morning, German for lunch, ‘American’ in the afternoon, and back to Korean in the evening? In her conclusion and in answer to that question she states, “Once different standards are embraced by individuals, the differences are incorporated into their individual cultures…the cultural differences are reframed into multiculturalism.”
The goal of this research is to find out why the immigrant students have to face more challenges in the level of education they achieve, the high level poverty that they face in their daily lives and all the confusing networks they have around them which they have no clue of how to utilize it. Also, the research focusses on the fewer resources immigrant students have while achieving their goals. The research question is important as it does affect all immigrant students and their respective families and not limited just to the immigrant. I am sure many families move to a different country to achieve better education and to make a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones. These families come with so much hope and faith, but in return they are bombarded with so much confusing information that it’s very easy for them to get lost and give up. At last, children are the future and if from being they don’t have the correct resources then how will they achieve their goals.
I remember glaring at my mom when she spoke Korean in public, telling her to be quiet. I remember avoiding talking about my culture, because I was ashamed. These simple remarks from children who were not taught to accept others’ differences truly affected my pride and identity. My parents would always tell me, “You should be proud of being Korean!” Despite this, I felt disrespected, downgraded, and discouraged.
By the late nineteenth century the economic lines in America between the upper and lower class were quickly widening because of the boom of urban industrial expansion. Moreover, during the 1800s, America witnessed an influx of immigrants coming from many parts of the world, they made tenement houses in New York’s lower East Side a common destination. One person witnessing the living conditions of these tenements was journalist Jacob A. Riis. For several years, Riis, with camera in hand, tooked a multitude of photographs that depicted the atrocious working and living conditions in the New York slums. Riss reported that the tenements were severely overcrowded, unsanitary, and a breeding ground for crime and disease. Riss also claimed that the “slum” landlords of these tenements exploited immigrants by charging them more rent than they could afford. As a result, every member of the family had to work—even young children. Subsequently, in 1890, Riis wrote a book entitled: How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York, which included his horrifying photographs and sketches, as means to expose to the middle class the chaotic environment of tenement living. Although Riss’s book exposes a myriad of social and economic problems regarding tenement housing, one of the more prominent ills his photographs and prose reveal is the harsh and distressing reality that immigrant families from the lower class must treat their children as a form of labor in order to survive. With this in mind, by describing and analyzing three of Riis’s photographs, I will demonstrate the validity of my argument which portrays the exploitation of child labor.
The immigrant’s journey to America, as depicted throughout history, transports culture, language, beliefs and unique lifestyles from one land to the other, but also requires one to undergo an adaptation process. The children of these immigrants, who are usually American-born, experience the complexity of a bicultural life, even without completely connecting to the two worlds to which they belong. In Susan’s case she’s eliciting multiple forms of subordination, and within each dimension she’s being subjective to different types of oppression; racial oppression, gender oppression, and class oppression, she’s experiencing cultural alienation and isolation and is not only based on her ethnicity as a Latina but is also influenced by how she is treated as a female, as a member of a certain socioeconomic class, and in relation to her English language proficiency, and even her perceived immigration status. The American Dream, is what every immigrant looks for when coming to the United States. But it's not all it seems to be. There are consequences, stereotypes and pressure put on the children of these immigrants. 40% of children in immigrant families have at least one parent who is mexican born. As stated by Childtrends.org. This means 40 out of 100 children have pressure on them whether it's by their parents (because they are immigrants) or by society by placing stereotypes.
Although most parents and children experience turmoil stemming from simple disagreements, immigrant families face more divisive tensions due to a cultural and societal gap between generations, strict parental expectations to conform to the ideals of a distant land, and differing beliefs on child rearing.
People come to the United States from all over the world with a different culture and adapted to their own perceptions of living. However, even though we live in a diverse country it is still difficult for everyone to adapt because our ways are not the same as the country of others. The “Negatively Bias” in chapter two increases immigrant students’ awareness of their negative cognitive problems in school. In some cases, immigrant students are feeling hopeless because the language used in class is not their first language. It is easier to think that their English level must not meet the standard. Haidt mentions that “nothing is miserable unless you think so.” (25) Immigrant students have already tended to put their academic progress as a dead end.
I have to introduce you to three individuals, not random individuals, but siblings - two brothers and a sister. They may seem just like any other people, but they have a secret that isn’t easily realized unless you know them. They belong here in the sense that they were born here, but their hearts belong to another land. They are the children of immigrants; the first generation to be born in America. It is a unique experience that to others may seem odd or exotic, but for these three is just as normal as learning to ride a bike.
When asked to define ones cultural identity people usually take the path that leads to their country of origin. They describe their beliefs and tradition which mirrors the values of people within that geographic location. But what about the people who are torn between two cultures? How would they define their cultural identity? This is the problem faced by Henry Park, the protagonist of the book Native Speaker by Chang-Rae Lee. Originally from Korea, he immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was little. However, his struggle of trying to find his acceptance into the American culture still continues. The book outlines his endless uncertainty of trying to define his cultural identity and his feelings as an outsider to the American Culture. Not being able to commit to either of the cultures leaves Henry confused regarding his true Cultural identity which Chang very artfully presents as a fuzzy line between the American and Korean Culture.
In the short story, "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, a Chinese mother and daughter are at odds with each other. The mother pushes her daughter to become a prodigy, while the daughter (like most children with immigrant parents) seeks to find herself in a world that demands her Americanization. This is the theme of the story, conflicting values. In a society that values individuality, the daughter sought to be an individual, while her mother demanded she do what was suggested. This is a conflict within itself. The daughter must deal with an internal and external conflict. Internally, she struggles to find herself. Externally, she struggles with the burden of failing to meet her mother’s expectations. Being a first-generation Asian American, I have faced the same issues that the daughter has been through in the story.
I am a born Vietnamese, and Chinese American. For more than a decade I have made many friends coming from diverse cultures. I recall one friend back in high school that demonstrated the importance of one’s own private culture, and language. From this experience with my friend, Hong, I realized that families who had a strong cultural, and language practice at home had a very stable and functional family. Individuals who embrace their culture, and language broadly tend to pass on the wisdom of a rich culture on to the next generation. Hong’s family demonstrated how out of sync, I was with my own language and culture. My family was losing its Vietnamese roots.
