The American Dream, is what every immigrant looks for when coming to the United States. But it's not all it seems to be. There are consequences, stereotypes and pressure put on the children of these immigrants. 40% of children in immigrant families have at least one parent who is mexican born. As stated by Childtrends.org. This means 40 out of 100 children have pressure on them whether it's by their parents (because they are immigrants) or by society by placing stereotypes. One example of pressure on children of immigrants by their parents to be smart or the best in class. A survey done says that 9 out of 10 children of immigrants say that they feel pressured by their parents to be the best in class and not get anything below a “B”. Most of the children surveyed said that they are scared if they get below a “B”. Another example of pressure on children to be “smart” is a story from The Washington Post. A book written on the challenges the children of immigrants face called Adaptation of immigrant children to the United States. This book talks about the challenges and pressure children of immigrants face in the united states. This pressure includes stereotyping. These children have to breaks these stereotypes put on them by society. These stereotypes include jokes such as “what's a mexicans favorite sport….cross country. ” etc. these little jokes are what make bigger situations happen and since they are just “jokes” people think it's okay. Although many people may say everyone had pressure from pressure and society. Yes, but these are the children of immigrants of all races. There are stereotypes put on them that they have to break. Their parents gave up their family to come to a new country to make their lives better. All of those little things add up and are in the back of their heads constantly reminding them of what everyone thinks of
